Chapter 42 - Months of Tempering

It has been a few months since the incident with Jack in the king's palace. These past few months have been the best time of Ray's life—he's had spare time, and no one has disturbed him. Now, it's just three days before our main character's seventh birthday.

Ray hasn't only been cultivating the Soul Cultivation Technique to increase his soul power using the Soul Orb. He has also been training in swordsmanship, talisman crafting, and formation techniques. In addition, he has made breakthroughs in many of his inventions.

To understand everything that has happened, we need to go back a few months to see what Ray has been up to.

It all began when Ray successfully created the Soul Orb after erasing Jack's soul from his body. He preserved a pure, perfect soul that could be cultivated without any side effects. However, he didn't break through that day—not because he couldn't, but because he chose not to. He was just one step away from a breakthrough. That day, he had already broken through twice, and if he pushed for another, he risked damaging the foundation of his soul cultivation. He didn't want to cripple himself.

After three days of cultivation, Ray got up from his cross-legged meditation and noticed two pairs of eyes staring at him. Looking up, he saw two women watching him—it turned out that his third mother had heard the news from Diana and came running to check on Ray.

Apparently, Diana had told Selene part of the story about Jack attacking Ray—leaving out the details about the relic. Upon hearing that Ray was at the site where her husband and Diana were battling and that he had been attacked by Jack but saved by Diana, Selene became deeply concerned and came to see him. Ray had no idea what to say, seeing her gaze filled with worry.

In the Walker family, aside from her three children and Robert, Ray was the one Selene cared about most. Her two sons usually stayed at the Ashford family estate to train and study talismans, so the only ones she personally taught were Angelina and Ray. Over time, she had developed a soft spot for him.

Seeing Ray get up safely, Selene immediately began lecturing him for not being careful. She was angry that he hadn't told her about such a dangerous mission and was nearly heartbroken upon hearing that Ray's soul had been attacked. She told Diana that she would be watching over Ray from now on, and for the first time, Diana saw just how much Selene cared about him. Moved by this, Diana softened her stance and agreed to let Selene help look after Ray.

After Selene left—comforted only after getting a farewell hug from Ray—he told his mother the truth about Jack: that he was a reincarnate and that two other reincarnates from Earth were also living in a different kingdom. Since they might eventually come after Ray, he informed Diana. She nodded and instructed him to stay home until he became an Iron Stage Soul Cultivator. Ray agreed.

From then on, Ray's daily routine involved cultivation, modifying his watch and tower, learning talismans and formations, and training in swordsmanship.

While training with Swordsman Ken the next day, Ken noticed that Ray was trying to imitate Robert's lightning-style movement by using lightning talismans and runes on his feet. But every time he attempted to fight Ken with this style, he was brutally defeated. Ken told Ray that he was trying to learn something far beyond his current capacity and capabilities.

Ray left disappointed. However, Ken's expression changed—because Ray was the first person to successfully imitate Robert. In the Walker family, Robert had been searching for a successor. He tried teaching his techniques to his soldiers, his children, and many others, but none succeeded. So Ken went straight to Robert's office and told him what had happened. Robert, who was busy with paperwork, stood up immediately upon hearing Ken's report.

The next day, when Aunt Mary brought Ray to train under Ken, they found Robert and Ken already waiting for him. Robert seemed excited to see Ray's attempt at the lightning style. Ray gave him a look, then began training with the lightning sword technique he had learned by observing Robert's battle with Jack.

As Robert watched Ray getting beaten to the ground over and over again, he saw that Ray was giving it his all until the very end. Robert's eyes never left him—sparkling with excitement. In that moment, he thought, 'This is it. I've found my successor.'

Robert then decided to take over Ray's training from Ken. His training was a hundred times harder. Ray now had to wear weighted gear every day and fight with Robert directly. At first, he couldn't last even half an hour. But slowly, over these past few months, Ray had built up his stamina and could now train with Robert for up to two hours.

During this time, Ray also learned various formation techniques from his mother and different kinds of talismans from Selene. Both were strict—especially after the attack on Ray—and took his training seriously. They also taught him soul techniques and provided him with soul-based formations and talismans designed for use with both protection disks and talisman paper.

In these few months, Ray had also made major progress with his tower. He discovered that feeding runes into the tower helped it grow, so he began doing that daily. As a result, the tower evolved. Originally, there were only 10 wristwatch slots. Now, there were 25. Ray had made 15 wristwatches but wasn't sure how to distribute them.

He planned to give some to his grandma, old man Rick, Aries, and the third concubine, Alicia. For the rest, he left the decision to his mother. She returned five of them to Ray to give away as he pleased and took six to see whether Robert could use them.

Ray also updated the wristwatches with a messaging feature, allowing users to send messages to one another. He demonstrated the feature to his mother and the others. And finally, he managed something no one had ever done—he created time.

In this ancient world, people had no way to tell the time precisely. But with Ray's invention, people could now read time on the watches. Instead of saying 'it is noon,' they could now say 'it is 1 o'clock.'

In terms of cultivation, Ray reached the peak of the 9th stage in his soul cultivation during these few months. He was ready to break through to the Iron Stage, but before he could do so, he was forced to pause his training—his seventh birthday was approaching, and the family was planning a party. Ray tried to argue with his mother, but she refused and told him to wait.
