Chapter 13 - The Hospital Secret

Jayden's POV

Dad was covered in blood when the ambulance arrived.

I held his hand as they lifted him onto the stretcher. His eyes were shut and he wasn't moving.

"Is he going to die?" I asked the paramedic, frantically.

"We need to get him to surgery right now," she said. "The bullet pierced through his chest."

One moment we were fighting with guns. The next, Dad was bleeding out.

The woman who looked like Sarah Kingston had shot him when he tried to shield Amara.

I climbed into the ambulance. Dad's breathing was shallow.

"Don't die, Dad," I whispered. "I'm sorry. I should've been braver."

His hand squeezed mine, then went limp.

"He's crashing!" the paramedic yelled. "Stay with us!"

They pushed me aside and worked on him the whole ride — shoving tubes, performing CPR, placing an oxygen mask over his face while one of them passed air into his lungs — and when we got to the hospital they rushed him straight to surgery.
