Detective Grey's POV
My phone rang at two in the morning with news that changed everything.
"Detective Grey," the voice said. "We found something in Rebecca Kingston's house."
I jumped out of bed and grabbed my clothes.
"What did you find?" I asked.
"Files," the officer said. "Boxes and boxes of files about stolen babies."
I was in my car and racing toward Rebecca's house within five minutes.
This case had been eating at me for weeks. Too many coincidences. Too many connections. Too many people who were supposed to be dead but weren't.
When I arrived at the house, other cops were carrying boxes out to their cars.
"Where's the basement?" I asked Officer Martinez.
"This way," she said.
We walked down narrow steps into a dark basement. The smell hit me immediately. Fear and sadness and something else I couldn't name.
There were chains on the wall where someone had been held prisoner.
