Chapter 25 - The Family Tree

Amara's POV

"Sheila's outside," I said, stepping away from the window.

Everyone in the room turned to look at me.

"Are you sure?" Dad asked.

"Yes," I said. "And she's not alone."

Detective Grey pulled out his gun and moved toward the door.

"Everyone stay calm," he said. "I'll handle this."

But I wasn't looking at Detective Grey.

I was looking at Emma.

My cousin.

The girl I didn't know existed until an hour ago.

She was sitting on our couch, eight months pregnant, scared and alone.

"I'm sorry," Emma said quietly. "I didn't mean to bring trouble to your family."

"You didn't bring trouble," Dad said. "Sheila did."

"But she found me because of you," Emma said. "She was going to buy my baby and pretend it was Elijah's."

I walked over and sat next to her.

"None of this is your fault," I said.

Emma wiped tears from her eyes.

"I didn't even know I had family until last week," she said. "My mom never told me about the Kingstons."

"Why not?" I asked.
