Chapter 56 - CHAPTER 56

Zombie World

A few minutes later, Xu Mo sat on the edge of the bed, watching the blonde girl stagger away.

He was speechless.

Closing his eyes, he tested the strength of this new body.

During their "exercise" just now, he had noticed something: his physique in this world was stronger than that of an ordinary person—otherwise, his endurance would never have lasted over an hour. Still, it was nothing remarkable.

His mental power remained usable, but his vessel limited him. At best, he could exert the strength of an intermediate warrior. Pushing further was possible, but the body would collapse long before his mind gave out.

Only black magic remained unaffected. After all, that power was borrowed—channeled through the soul. As long as his spirit was strong, the body wouldn't matter.

"It seems that after dream walking, my greatest reliance is black magic," Xu Mo concluded.

That said, the constant nourishment of spiritual energy was strengthening this vessel as well. At its current growth rate, this body could reach the peak of a War God in a year. But he doubted he'd remain in such a mundane world that long.

He picked up the phone on the bedside table.

September 6, 2008.

So this world's timeline wasn't far off from his original.

Dressing, Xu Mo moved to the computer still looping a short film. He opened a browser and scoured the news.

Minutes later, he leaned back, frowning.

This was indeed just an ordinary Earth. No Iron Man. No Stark Industries. No superheroes at all. The timeline matched his previous life's world almost perfectly.

A sharp knock rattled the door.

Xu Mo opened it to find a slightly overweight young white man, maybe twenty, short-haired and freckled, panic in his eyes.

"Xu, come with me!"

Before Xu Mo could speak, the man grabbed his arm and yanked him toward a pickup idling at the curb.

"Wait—" Xu Mo freed himself easily, though subtly enough not to alarm him.

"Mind telling me where we're going?"

He didn't recognize the man, but judging from his urgency and familiarity, this person was likely a close friend of his parallel self.

"No time to explain—just get in!" the man barked, shoving open the passenger door.

Xu Mo slid inside. Even if this stranger wasn't a friend, in a powerless world there was nothing to fear.

The truck roared down the road. Xu Mo noticed the setting immediately—suburban, quiet streets. Normally, traffic would be sparse here. Yet in minutes, they had passed a dozen speeding cars, all fleeing.

"What happened?" Xu Mo asked.

The man's grip on the wheel tightened. "Rabies. The city's full of people infected with it. They bite everyone they see. Even the cops can't stop them. Online rumors say Boston's already fallen."

Xu Mo's eyes narrowed. Rabies virus?

"…Zombies?" he muttered.

The man glanced at him, baffled. "Zombies? What are those?"

Before Xu Mo could answer, a crash echoed ahead. Two cars had collided at the corner, smoke curling into the air.

A lone figure staggered out of the wreck.

Xu Mo's pulse quickened. The shuffling gait—the posture—it matched every zombie cliché.

But as they drew closer, he realized he had overthought it.

The figure was none other than the blonde girl from earlier, still unsteady on her feet—for reasons entirely his fault. No wonder she'd looked familiar from a distance.

Spotting them, she waved frantically.

The truck skidded to a halt beside her. Xu Mo and the driver climbed out.

The blonde girl rushed up, clutching Xu Mo's arm. Her voice shook.

"I wasn't speeding—he hit me! But he blacked out during the crash. I tried, but I couldn't get his door open!"

Fear was etched on her face.

Xu Mo ignored her excuses. His gaze locked on the car. His mental power slipped inside.

On the driver's seat, a middle-aged man convulsed violently, eyes bloodshot, lips curling into guttural growls.

"A zombie," Xu Mo confirmed, though his tone carried more excitement than fear.

Zombies posed no threat to him—he could fly if needed. But more importantly: if killing them earned points, this world was a goldmine.

A thought, and a screw inside the car vibrated loose. It shot forward, piercing the zombie's forehead.

The man's spasms ceased instantly.

A system prompt chimed in Xu Mo's mind:

"Congratulations, host. You killed a villain and earned 1 point."

Xu Mo's eyes widened. "There are points…?"

One zombie, one point. But in a global outbreak? Twenty, thirty billion zombies. Even killing a fraction meant tens of millions of points.

His lips curled upward uncontrollably.

The blonde noticed and smacked his arm in frustration. "Stop smiling and help save him!"

Her voice dragged him back. He turned to her and, for the first time, asked:

"By the way… what's your name?"

She froze, then glared, chest heaving with outrage.

"You bastard! After everything we just did, you're asking my name?!"
