Chapter 31 - SALT IN OLD WOUNDS

{MORGANNA'S POV}

I sat with my back against the trunk of a tree, the bark rough against my spine, my knees drawn up tight as if I could fold myself small enough to vanish. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I cried silently.

Rhea sat beside me. She hasn't said a word ever since. Her arms were curled loosely around herself and her face showed no emotion, but I could feel the grief radiating from her.

For a long while, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I turned my head and whispered, "You heard everything, didn't you? What I said to him."

"Yes." she replied.

I let my gaze fall to the ground, a lump catching in my throat. "After all the time that's passed, I thought I'd healed. I thought I was strong enough to face the past without bleeding all over again. But seeing him tonight… with her, with a child in her womb—" My voice broke. "It ripped me open. It hurts, Rhea. Gods, it hurts so much I can hardly breathe. The pain… it makes me wish I could just lie down and die."
