I watched Apollo with those eager eyes of his, the kind that begged for trust before it was earned. Call him Apollo, he'd said, as if shortening his name would make him seem more approachable. His face held too much openness, like a door left unlocked in a dangerous neighborhood.

Still, something about his stare unsettled me. When his gaze drifted toward me or landed on Echo, my chest would tighten involuntarily. The way he looked at us wasn't exactly hostile, but it carried weight. Like he was searching for something familiar in our faces, some memory that kept clawing its way to the surface.

I pushed those thoughts down. We had patients to see.
