Lem was getting his freedom regardless of what happened next. After listening to his story, I could see he posed no real danger to my pack. A simple warning scar would have sent him on his way with a clear message about respecting territorial boundaries.
But the universe had a twisted sense of timing.
Pauline stood before me now, those fierce eyes blazing with protective fury. She had emerged from wherever she'd been hiding to shield Lem, the young wolf she'd come to rescue. In doing so, she had handed me the one thing I'd craved every single day since she walked out of my life.
Twice I'd watched her slip away from me. That was already two times more than I could stomach.
This time would be different. She wasn't running anywhere.
