Chapter 12 - The Vice Adventures Guild

Cindy Lou slid the three finished guild ID cards across the counter with a soft scrape. Her tail swayed lazily as she smiled saying "All right, your pet Ciara is now registered, as well as you, Rem, and your servant Amaia. Your pet will not receive an official guild rank unless you choose to register her as a battle pet later on, should your fox prove capable. Many creatures in Elsera develop strange and mysterious abilities that allow them to fight, so it would not be surprising if this happens. As for you and your servant, you will begin at Rank F the lowest rank for adventurers."

Cindy Lou reached for her a pen and gathered more details from Rem and Amaia before writing them down on to the guild IDs that Rem handed back to her. Once finished, she laid the three metal plates back onto the desk, then saying an incantation, a light flared up around them. The plates shimmered, transforming into transparent metallic cards etched with glowing handwriting. When Rem lifted hers, she could see her own portrait perfectly, yet the card remained clear as glass.

Rem's brow furrowed. "Why are our Guild identification cards transparent? I can see the details and my picture, but the transparency confuses me."

Cindy Lou tucked a stray lock of hair behind her cat ear and answered honestly. "It's a unique anti counterfeiting measure. This spell belongs to the Adventurers Guild alone. These tags are virtually indestructible. Should anyone other than the owner attempt to claim one, the tag will dissipate and return to the nearest guild. From there, we can determine whether the owner has passed away or is in need of rescue. Absolutely do not lose these—if they vanish, it will be taken as a distress call. They also contain a basic location tracker. If they disappear, someone will be dispatched immediately to your last known location. Unlike the nasty rumors on the streets, we at the Adventurers Guild consider our members family. We do not tolerate bullying. We do not tolerate heckling. And we certainly do not tolerate attempts to kill our adventurers."

Rem's eyes narrowed slightly as she studied the glowing card. "So you're telling me nobody here gives a hard time to young women like us, who look pampered and inexperienced? I expected we would be harassed here at least a little but. But this place looks abandoned."

Cindy Lou's ears twitched as she smiled. "You have no need to fear bullying here. Since the new Guild Master took over leadership of all of the guilds, he has made it his mission to remodel everything from the top down. We no longer tolerate members who harass or undermine others. However…" Her voice dipped lower, her tail moving in warning. "I can't say the same for the organization that sprouted up after he consolidated power. They call themselves the Vice Adventurers Guild. The name is ironic—it's made up of all the scum and rejects the Guild Master cast out for being obsessed with certain Vices. For reference, the Guild Master is the leader of all the guilds across Elsera. Each local branch, however, is led by a Deputy Guild Master. There are too many of them to count."

Rem's lips pulled into a slow smile as she turned to Amaia. "Amaia it looks like we might get to run into a bunch of bad guys. I can't believe that when we joined the Adventurers Guild, we did not get bullied at all. Instead, they all just got shoved into some reject guild. This is unbelievable. It's nothing like the stories I read about as a child."

Amaia's steel-grey eyes rolled upwards as she let out a quiet sigh. "My lady, honestly, this is good for you. If all those fools were here heckling you, knowing your temper, you would have beaten the life out of them. That would have caused problems for us. We don't need that right now. And I have a bad feeling we're going to run into those rejects soon enough."

Rem gave a small nod of her head, acknowledging the truth in Amaia's words, then she fixated her gaze back on Cindy Lou. "I would like to take a quest for the Underworld."
