Chapter 14 - She Is Fucking Disobedient

With a full monologue like Macbeth, he passed me like a storm across open meadows, rustling the blades of grass. His black shoes made no noise on the polished floor, as if he were gliding rather than walking. Stopping at the door, he said without turning around.

"Stay in my office until I return."

He pulled his phone out of his pocket and dialed a number before opening the door and disappearing through it.

My shoulders slumped as the door closed. Walking over to his desk, I grabbed the folder he had left for me. Instead of walking away and sitting down, I plopped down in his executive chair and nearly screamed with relief. It was warm and so comfortable that my butt immediately sank into it.

Once settled, I opened the folder and began reading his terms and my duties. The paper was smooth under my fingers and had a pleasant floral scent.

The rules were as follows:

Rule #1 - Don't say no to Alpha Kane Sterling's orders. His word is always final.

Rule #2 - Leave your attitude at the door; there is only room for one person, and that's him.

Rule #3 - His coffee must be freshly brewed every day and served hot.

Rule #4 - Don't be late.

Rule #5 - Always knock before entering his office.

I read on, rocking his chair left and right.

Responsibilities included:

Organize travel and travel with him to other cities and countries. Attend meetings with him and take notes. Make dinner reservations for him and his guests. Act according to his mood. (Yes! Who was I? His mood monitor?) Pick up his dry cleaning and help him with his tie. (What was this job with his tie? Couldn't a man tie it himself?) Make him a healthy smoothie and bring it to him after his workout. (Really? He'd be shirtless?) Accompany him to family events and parties and pose as his girlfriend if necessary. All expenses are covered by the company. Clothes and other accessories will be chosen by Alpha Kane.

I jumped up from my seat, my heart jumping into my throat too. The folder fell to the floor with a soft thud.

Was this some kind of joke, or was he serious?

The more I thought about it, the more confusing this thought became. Wasn't this what I wanted - to have a strong man by my side to make Marcus jealous?

It seemed like an opportunity, but also a little weird. Of all the girls he could choose from, why did he choose me?

Leaning over, I picked up the file and read the line written so casually again.

"He was afraid I'd say no to his face?" I asked Nova.

"So he chose the coward's path?" Nova replied.

"I wanted to do it, Nova?"

"Hell yeah. This is a good opportunity." She said happily.

"Am I used to following orders like this?" I was a little confused.

"No, but we will try, but remember, we must obey Alpha," Nova advised me.

But I had a point to prove, and this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. It had to be beyond my capabilities, and that was what I considered difficult. I needed a challenge.

I looked through the company policies and other rules related to corporate secrets and non-disclosure agreements.

Finally, I reached for my paycheck. I wanted to see how generous Cold Wolf was. To my surprise, the space was left blank with a small note.

{Fill it in according to your expectations.}

A mischievous smile appeared on my lips as I read this.

Grabbing the elegant pen, I opened it to reveal a sharp silver nib. It was a limited edition pen, all fancy and classy.

"Let's see how generous you are," I muttered, writing down the amount with an extra zero, just to annoy him.

If he wanted me to act as his girlfriend, too, I needed to pay extra. Let's see how desperately he wanted a fake girlfriend.

I then proceeded to sign the papers in all the places where my signature was required. Returning his pen to its rightful place, I closed the folder.

I darted to look at his desk again, just to kill some free time. Everything was immaculately laid out; he seemed like a neat freak, a bit like me. I got that innate character trait from my father. I looked around his office, and there was a full bar of expensive liquor.

Leaning back in my chair, I relaxed and turned to look out the window for a while. It seemed like a one-way mirror, and from here I could see the heart of this Sterling society.

I suppressed a yawn. I had barely slept the night before, and Katie's ghost had scared me.

The comfortable leather chair was starting to make me sleepy, and I struggled to keep my eyes open. Maybe I could get ten minutes of shut-eye. I was wide awake before he arrived. I'd barely close my eyes, and sleep would take me.

Sterling's POV

The meeting with Hawksten, the company responsible for supplying wool to the Sterling Empire, took longer than expected.

As usual, I wasn't focused; my thoughts kept wandering to the woman I'd left in his office.

I was looking for a specific secretary, and there were several ulterior motives for who I'd choose. When Zara walked into my office, I knew she'd be the perfect choice.

Fate worked in mysterious ways.

She wasn't a pushover; her look was challenging and mischievous with a long tongue. It would be interesting to explore different aspects of her personality. The rules I'd put in place were deliberately designed to see how she'd react.

She wasn't being outrageous or too passive. I didn't want a robot, and she wasn't going to be one. She is fucking disobedient.
