I wasn't usually one to pry, but I had countless questions about Carlos.

Every single question only deepened my trust issues.

Sometimes I would ask about his family, wondering if they'd accept our relationship, but his response stayed the same.

"I'll make sure they accept us," he told me. Darkness filled his eyes with pure hatred as he added, "And if they don't, we'll just ignore my bastard family."

His words didn't comfort me one bit.

Actually, they made me feel worse about myself because I knew I'd be seen as his 'bad influence,' and his family would despise me for it.

All the family drama had worn me down. Ramirez and Amara had exhausted me, so if I remarried, I wanted a man whose family would welcome me completely.

I wanted to know if I could help fix things between his family and him.

After all, unlike me—whose family fell apart when I was just a teenager—he still had parents, even if they were distant.
