Outside Heaven Dou City, at Heaven Dou Royal Academy.
Ever since Dugu Bo arrived at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, he hadn't left. While accompanying Dugu Yan, he was also waiting for Cheng Xiao to return and detoxify her.
What surprised him pleasantly was that as the pain from the poison in his own body lessened, the bottleneck he had been stuck at for years — the barrier of Rank 91 — finally showed signs of loosening.
That faint trace of an impending breakthrough sent him into sheer delight. For ordinary Spirit Masters, every level past Rank 90 was a massive barrier, but Dugu Bo had been trapped at this level for about ten years. Ten years!
Now that he finally sensed a breakthrough, how could he not be overjoyed?
When Cheng Xiao returned to Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Dugu Bo immediately sought him out. He had waited far too long for this day — the day Dugu Yan could finally be freed from the torment of her poison.
"Cheng Xiao, Grandpa said you can help remove the poison from my body. Is that really true?" Dugu Yan bit her lip as she asked.
She had always hidden her pain from her grandfather, enduring it alone so as not to make him feel guilty. After all, her father's death had been caused by the poison from their family's martial soul — the Jade Phosphor Serpent.
"Don't worry, Yan Yan. The poison in your grandfather's body was cured by this kid, Cheng Xiao. Just look at me now — doesn't my face look a lot better?" Dugu Bo comforted her, rubbing her head gently.
"Don't worry, Sister Yan. This poison will be removed soon."
A glint flashed in Cheng Xiao's eyes as his hands formed a profound seal. Moments later, an ancient and complex incantation flowed from his lips. As he chanted, Dugu Yan's body began to show faint changes.
Unlike when he treated Dugu Bo, this case was far simpler. Dugu Yan was still young, and the poison hadn't yet spread throughout her entire body, making the treatment much easier.
As streams of pure Heaven and Earth energy entered Dugu Yan's body, the poison lurking in her bone marrow and meridians was gradually cleansed by wave after wave of purifying power. The tormenting toxins turned into wisps of poisonous mist that slowly drifted out of her body.
After about half an hour, Dugu Yan had already fallen into a deep sleep. Dugu Bo nodded at Cheng Xiao, then gently lifted his granddaughter and disappeared from the room with a flicker of his figure.
Once Dugu Bo left, Cheng Xiao sat cross-legged on the floor and began to restore the Heaven and Earth energy he had consumed.
Ever since he had mastered all the magic incantations, what he absorbed was no longer ordinary spirit power, but the purest form of Heaven and Earth energy. In truth, the two were essentially the same — spirit power was simply a denser, more refined form of Heaven and Earth energy. The only difference was that Cheng Xiao absorbed it in its purest, unfiltered state.
In the blink of an eye, several days passed.
Since returning to Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Cheng Xiao hadn't left again. He spent every day cultivating, his diligence earning Dugu Bo's sincere admiration.
Over time, Dugu Bo's opinion of Cheng Xiao had changed greatly. He realized that this teenage boy possessed a maturity far beyond his years. His perseverance reminded Dugu Bo of himself when he was young — when he had pushed himself desperately to cultivate, hoping to overcome the curse of the Jade Phosphor Serpent poison and break through to Title Douluo. Looking at Cheng Xiao now, Dugu Bo couldn't help but see traces of his younger self in the boy.
Dugu Bo's own reclusive nature and toxic martial soul had made most Spirit Masters avoid him. Yet Cheng Xiao wasn't afraid of his poison — or rather, Dugu Bo's poison couldn't harm him at all. This created a subtle sense of kinship between them, and before long, their relationship had grown into one that was both mentor and friend.
"Young one, that person you told me about — when exactly is he coming?"
Dugu Bo walked into Cheng Xiao's room, pulled up a chair, and sat down without ceremony. His usual domineering Title Douluo demeanor was nowhere to be seen.
At the question, Cheng Xiao slowly opened his eyes from cultivation. Seeing Dugu Bo pour himself a cup of tea, he smiled slightly. "He should be here soon."
"You said that two days ago," Dugu Bo snorted, downing the tea in one gulp. Then he chuckled weirdly. "The more I look at you, the more you remind me of myself when I was young. Why don't you take me as your teacher?"
"No."
Cheng Xiao refused without hesitation. Then he picked up his neatly folded clothes from the bed and put them on. A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Old man, do you still remember the condition you agreed to back then?"
"Condition?" Dugu Bo blinked, then quickly recalled. "Ah, you mean that I promised not to fight that person when he came? Hah, that's nothing. Since I gave my word, I'll keep it."
"Good." Cheng Xiao smiled. As long as Dugu Bo kept that promise, things would stay peaceful — otherwise, if he knew who was coming, it would surely turn into a battle that would shake the heavens.
After finishing their morning cultivation, Cheng Xiao and Dugu Bo left Heaven Dou Royal Academy together. Because of Dugu Bo's fame, they rarely dined within Heaven Dou City itself — eating with a Title Douluo always drew too much attention.
And since Dugu Bo hated being stared at by crowds, the two of them usually disguised themselves and ate in the outskirts instead.
However, just as they left the academy grounds, a soft yet sinister voice suddenly echoed through the air — followed by a surge of immense spirit power.
"Old poison, long time no see~"
The instant that voice rang out, Dugu Bo stepped forward to shield Cheng Xiao behind him. His expression turned cold as he glared upward — at a golden chrysanthemum spinning slowly in the air.
"Chrysanthemum Guan, shouldn't you be staying obediently in Spirit Hall? What are you doing here looking for me? Don't tell me… you still want to kill me?"
"Kill you? Old poison, you think too highly of yourself."
Chrysanthemum Douluo Yue Guan sneered. "If I wanted to kill you, do you think I'd come alone? I advise you not to meddle — step aside and stay out of my way."
"And what if I don't?"
A cold gleam flashed in Dugu Bo's eyes as nine spirit rings rose around him from bottom to top. His Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor Martial Soul appeared behind him — a massive serpent with orange-yellow eyes, fixing its deadly gaze on the floating Chrysanthemum Douluo.
"Old poison, don't go too far!" Yue Guan's expression darkened. What was wrong with this old snake? He hadn't even come to fight him, yet the man was acting so hostile!
"Heh, Chrysanthemum Guan, I am going too far today — what can you do about it?" Dugu Bo said fearlessly.
He already had a strong hunch — this damned Chrysanthemum Douluo's appearance here had something to do with Cheng Xiao. Either to kill him or to force him into joining Spirit Hall. Since his relationship with Cheng Xiao had already become one of camaraderie and trust, Dugu Bo had no intention of letting Yue Guan take him away. Even if he couldn't win, he would never let the other leave easily.
Finally, Yue Guan snapped. "Old poison! I told you before — don't call me Chrysanthemum Guan!"
As his angry roar echoed, nine dazzling spirit rings rose around him. A powerful Rank 95 spirit pressure burst forth as countless golden petals rained down from the sky, transforming into countless sharp blades aimed straight at Dugu Bo.
"Chrysanthemum Guan, take this!"
Dugu Bo countered instantly. Though his rank was lower than Yue Guan's, his poison was nothing to be underestimated.
But just as the two attacks were about to collide, Cheng Xiao suddenly flashed between them. A massive magic circle spread beneath his feet, and a shimmering barrier of energy enveloped them.
"Song of Protection!"
