Chapter 40 - Comfort

Nevaeh whipped her head around, glaring at him with blazing fury. "Cassius, what do you mean? What exactly are you trying to do?"

"Why didn't you tell me?" Cassius's voice was low but sharp, his gaze locked on the book from Samuel. "You'd rather turn to someone else than come to me."

The second-hand laptop was slammed shut again and again until, with a faint crack, the screen went black.

Years of her hard work, gone in an instant. Nevaeh's chest tightened as hot tears of anger and helplessness burned her eyes.

She shot up from her chair, her finger trembling as she pointed at Cassius.

"Do you have any idea how much this competition means to me? For three years, I couldn't even go to college! I worked day and night in the pharmacy, saving every bit of material, clinging to one dream, that one day, I'd get into medical school and finally become a real healer!"

Her voice cracked, but she pushed through, her tears spilling down.
