Gerardo was dead.
The voice on the phone was so distant, just echoing in Nevaeh's ears, leaving her completely frozen in shock and helplessness.
Even though Nevaeh didn't have any strong feelings for Gerardo, she knew from her grandmother's diary that he was just like her—a child her grandmother had taken in. He had always been so cold to both her and her grandmother. Now that this had happened, she knew she should be able to just turn away, to ignore it… but she just couldn't.
"My adoptive father is dead," she said, her voice hollow. "His body hasn't been claimed. I need to go to the police station."
Her appetite was completely gone, even though the Wei family had prepared this huge feast just for her. She at least owed them an explanation.
Yesenia was totally taken aback. "Oh my gosh, how could this happen? You should let Liam go with you. If you need anything, he can handle it."
Nevaeh just shook her head, refusing.
