Chapter 23: Midnight Investigation
Isabella's POV
Sleep was impossible.
I had lain awake for hours in Yvette's bed, staring at the ceiling and listening to the occasional hum of the heating system through the walls. My mind replayed all the conversation from earlier, Eilidh's bold suggestion, Alexander's infuriating smirk as he backed her up, Michael's soft warning to Yvette. Every word had carved itself into my thoughts until I couldn't even close my eyes without feeling restless.
When the knock finally came, I bolted upright.
I knew it wasn't Clara, she would have used the spare key. And it certainly wasn't Yvette, not with two cracked ribs still binding her to the infirmary. For a moment I thought I had imagined it. Then it came again, softer this time.
Swallowing, I slid off the bed and crept to the door. Alexander had told me they'd come for me later at night. Maybe it was him and Eilidh.
