Chapter 52: Breaking the Moment
The world fell away the moment Alex's lips touched mine.
There was no hesitation now...no jokes, no teasing...just that terrifying, breathless stillness that made everything else disappear.
He was warm, steady. His fingers brushed the side of my neck, sending sparks up my spine. I didn't know if I was trembling from the cold air or from him, but I didn't want to pull away.
It was quiet except for our breathing. Too quiet.
Then...
Bang!
The door slammed open so hard it hit the wall.
Alex and I jumped apart instantly, both spinning toward the sound. My heart hammered in my chest as if I'd been caught doing something criminal.
Standing in the doorway was Eilidh.
Her brown hair was tangled, her cheeks flushed, and there was a thin line of red across her face. It was a cut. It was small but it was obvious it was recent because that had not been in her face this morning.
