Chapter 4 - Ling Shuang

The phone in her hand buzzed just as Ning Wei was about to put it down. The light in her eyes lit up the moment Ning Wei saw the name on her phone screen. She did not expect that the other party would get back to her this quickly.

Ning Wei glanced at the door. Seeing that the door was closed tightly, Ning Wei finally slid her finger on the screen to pick up the phone call.

"Wei Wei." A woman's cheerful voice was heard on the other line. "I thought you had a meeting with your group and manager? Is the meeting boring? That's why you have the time to text me?"

The corner of Ning Wei's lips started to twitch when she heard the hint of complaint in the woman's voice.

"The meeting ended a while ago," Ning Wei said. There was a trace of helplessness in her tone. "Shuang'er, why do your words sound as if I'm only texting you whenever I have some free time?"

"Isn't it like that?" Ling Shuang clicked her tongue. "Wei Wei, you were too quiet recently. I'm starting to worry about you. Fortunately, I can still find out your news on the internet."

"It can't be helped." Ning Wei sighed. "You know that I am busy with the group's recent single."

"Of course. I know about this." The light in Ling Shuang's eyes lit up when Ning Wei brought up the group's latest single.

Once the single was released, Ling Shuang joined the other fans to promote DAWN on the internet. She spent quite a lot of money to buy the group's single for Ning Wei. But of course… Ling Shuang was not going to tell her friend what she had done for her. She could already imagine that Ning Wei would tell her not to waste her money.

But as her friend, how could Ling Shuang not support her friend?

"Wei Wei, it's good that you texted me," Ling Shuang said. She sat up as she recalled that she had something important to tell her friend. "Coincidentally, I have something to tell you."

Ning Wei raised a brow, noticing the excitement in her friend's tone of voice. "What is it?" She leaned on her seat and waited for her friend, Liang Shuang, to continue.

"Remember when you asked me to find the whereabouts of your family?"

Ning Wei sat up straight. The light in her eyes flashed with anticipation when she heard Liang Shuang's words. "You have some news?" Her throat felt dry, making her voice croak slightly.

The smile on Ning Wei's lips froze the moment she heard Ling Shuang mention her family.

As she grew up, Ning Wei's curiosity about her family heightened/

She wanted to know who she really was and the family that her late mother was supposed to bring her back to.

Ning Wei thought of looking for her maternal grandparents. But after a few years of searching and failing, she began to wonder if her maternal grandparents had followed her mother. Still… even if her grandparents had long passed away, Ning Wei wanted to know about their final resting place. Most importantly, she hoped to find her late mother's resting place. Perhaps this will give her clues on finding her father as well.

Ling Shuang volunteered to help her find some news about her family members.

The girl was quite good with computers. Ling Shuang thought that she might be able to find some news with her skills.

Now that Ling Shuang mentioned her mother's family, Ning Wei guessed that her friend had some news.

"Mhm…" Ling Shuang nodded. "It was hard to find them. To tell you the truth, I am not one hundred percent sure if the people I found are your family. But from the little information you gave me, I think there is a high chance that the old couple is the person you are looking for."

Ning Wei's heart was beating fast.

She had always dreamed of reuniting with her family. Hearing that Ling Shuang might have found them felt a bit surreal.

Right now, Ning Wei wanted to leave the club and look for Ling Shuang. At the same time, Ning Wei was afraid. There was a chance that the grandparents she wanted to meet might not be the people she hoped they would be.

The scene where her birth mother died would always be fresh in her head.

Ning Wei was kidnapped when she was four and taken to an orphanage.

She grew up until she was seven, believing that her parents had long passed away.

It wasn't until one day, a beautiful woman with reddened eyes came to look for her and claimed to be her mother.

The woman told her how she had been searching for her ever since she went missing. Years have passed, but she has never given up on finding her. The woman told her that now that they had found each other, she was going to take her home.

They will never part again.

Looking at the woman's gentle eyes and the photos that she brought with her, Ning Wei decided to trust her.

Unexpectedly, they ran into an accident on the way home.

It was a rainy day, and the car swerved and crashed into a tree.

Ning Wei remembered how her mother looked at her anxiously as the car started to swerve. Her mother hugged her tightly before the car crashed.

Blood was everywhere. Ning Wei was unharmed because of her mother's protection. Until now, Ning Wei could remember her mother's soothing words, telling her not to cry.

Fortunately, someone happened to drive past the area and helped.

Her mother told their rescuer to help Ning Wei escape first. She was taken to a safer place not too far away from the crashed car when they heard a loud boom.

The fire was too big. The kind person who came to rescue them did not have the chance to pull her mother or the driver out. Ning Wei could only watch as the fire grew bigger before she was taken away.

"Wei Wei?"

Ling Shuang's voice snapped Ning Wei out of her trance.

"Are you still there?"

Ning Wei cleared her throat. "I'm here. Just… I just can't believe that you found them." Her lips tilted up. Ning Wei wanted to smile, but her cheek felt a bit stiff. She raised a hand to run her fingers through her hair and realized that she was trembling.

"Hey, don't get your hopes up. I did warn you that I am not entirely sure of the couple is yourー"

"I know." Ning Wei sighed. "But it has been a long time since I got any news."

Ling Shuang pursed her lips. She knew that Ning Wei had always been searching for her family to know who she really was.

"Let's not talk about this on the phone," Ling Shuang said.

"Mhm…" Ning Wei nodded. She inhaled a deep breath to compose her mind. "Shuang'er, where are you? I'll come and find you."

The call ended after the two girls made their arrangements.

Ning Wei stood up quickly and finally remembered that she was supposed to meet with Fu Ming Shi in the lobby. She left the private room and put on her mask again. Ning Wei was planning to ask Fu Ming Shi to drop her off at Ling Shuang's place.

There were a lot of things she wanted to ask Ling Shuang.

She was in a hurry and did not notice that one of the doors along the corridor swung open.

Her body collided with the person who came out of the private room, making her stumble a few steps backward.

She was about to scold that person for his carelessness when she finally saw the man's face.

This person… Wasn't he the tall man she had seen earlier?

"Sorry." The man apologized.

"Watch where you are going." Her anger quickly dispersed. Ning Wei turned around, wanting to leave. But after a few steps, someone tugged on her arm, making her turn again.

"You…" Ning Wei frowned, noticing that the person who was tugging her arm was that tall man. The light in her eyes flickered when she realized that there was something wrong with the man.

His face reddened, and his eyes unfocused.

He seemed different from a while ago.

"What's wrong with you?" Ning Wei asked.

The man shook his head as if trying too hard to stay focused. His eyes narrowed as he saw the concerned face in front of him. "Help me."
