In the original story, Naruto learned it from the Scroll of Seals himself. Because no one taught him, and he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, he tried many times without finding the correct method, always resorting to using it as a numbers game.
"That's amazing! I want to learn that! Sister Yugao, teach me quickly!" Naruto feigned eagerness.
Yugao was quite pleased with Naruto's eagerness to learn, so she taught him how to perform the Shadow Clone Technique.
"Shadow Clone Technique!"
Naruto put on a very awkward act, performing it the way Yugao had shown him.

It seemed he'd overdone it. One figure after another kept appearing, quickly filling the entire training ground.
