Even as echoes of thunderous blows struck from above like thunder claps, Jun could make out the footsteps of Destur behind him. He wasn't running at full speed, moving just fast enough to remain within sight of his pursuer.
After several turns, Jun found himself an open garage for a mechanic's workshop. He feigned tiredness, flailing his arms as he came to a stop by the garage entrance. The sounds of battle had reduced significantly, hopefully meaning they wouldn't be interrupted by anyone. A sentiment shared by his pursuer who swaggered closer to Jun, arms spread.
"This is where you run to?" he takes in the surrounding, "is this place special to you or something?"
"Hey, what are you doing here!" shouted a man in overalls, emerging from the garage, wielding a large wrench.
Destur sneered at the newcomer, igniting a purple orb in his hand. The newcomer didn't wait another moment, fleeing into the garage and somewhere out of sight once he laid eyes on signs these were super beings.
"Look at 'im go." Said Destur to Jun. "It really is a new era." He murmured to himself. He looked around, "Well. I'm here. I'm guessing you're going to have your last stand here?"
Jun spoke suddenly, "Is this really the best way to use our abilities?"
"Huh?"
"Think about it. We have real, actual super powers! Is this-"
Destur held up a hand and began laughing to himself. "Oh kid. You're boring in all the right ways." He began to stretch his arms and waist, "well. This was pointless no? I figured you were some kid with new powers that could help the boss, but since you're not… well. Destur gets to have some fun."
He playfully held up a finger. With no warning it lit up and at its tip, a purple swirling ball of energy formed until it was the size of a golf ball, much smaller than what he tried to hit Jun with minutes ago. Destur flicked his finger at Jun and the ball flew towards him.
Jun realized the ball moved surprisingly slowly in his eyes, allowing him to step to aside, it struck the garage wall, immediately melting concrete to slag in seconds.
Jun's eyes widened when he saw that. He absolutely couldn't let that touch him. He was about to retreat further into the garage when he noticed Destur charging up another orb.
"See. I knew you're fast. Very few normals could dodge my acid balls, even when I'm not going all out." He threw flicked it at Jun. Suddenly, a metal cup sitting at the entrance of the garage flew in a curved arc, intercepting the energy ball, colliding with it in mid-air becoming partially melted and continuing towards Destur. His eyes widened and he jumped backwards.
Jun saw Destur leave his effective radius so he thrust the melting cup at Destur with all the might he could conjure. He watched Destur scramble to generate another orb to launch at the incoming projectile, so Jun dashed forward to close the distance, as he did, an unbolted hub cap flew from the garage, quickly positioning ahead of him.
Destur had thrown his new orb, hoping to melt the incoming projectile before it hit him. Unfortunately, he watched a hub cap fly forward, striking both orbs, beginning to melt before flying further and enveloping Destur's face.
Jun winced as Destur made horrible screaming and gurgling sounds, trying to run in a random direction before slowing and collapsing to the ground, his head still sizzling from the mixed melted materials.
Even though he hadn't over exerted himself, Jun could feel his heart beat rapidly. He stood, rooted to the spot, unsure if he really had just killed a man.
Suddenly, a surge of energy enveloped Jun. He felt a potent force slip into him through his skin before coalescing towards and resting within the source of his ability in his temple. He threw his head in multiple directions, looking for a potential attacker. No one was there.
As he looked around for a potential ambush, Jun's eyes fell on the unmoving body of Destur. Jun rushed to the nearest wall and vomited again. This time his stomach was mostly empty so he spent a few minutes drying heaving.
"Why!" he screamed at the corpse, "I'm sorry! I thought you wanted to kill me." Jun felt tears gather in his eyes, but he wasn't sure what to do, so he held them back. Instead he approached Destur.
"What did- Why did you-" sigh. "I'm sorry." Jun said to the body. "You- you were trying to kill me right?" Jun caught movement out of the corner of his eye. He spotted someone in a building peering at him from behind a curtained window.
Jun rose and tried walking away, yet his feet felt unsteady. He wasn't sure exactly where he was, but as his legs got better, he hurried away from the scene.
Jun walked until the sound of battle had ceased. He kept walking until he entered an area where the streets weren't damaged by battle and the buildings remained intact. He found a corner on the bare ground to sit as he buried his face in his palms.
His phone rang shocking him out of his depressed state. It was Mr. Kim. So he immediately answered.
"Good morning sir."
"Jun!" he shouted, then calmed "well thank goodness you answered, where are you young man!?"
Jun could barely hold his voice together as he spoke, "sir. I'm on my way to work- b-b-but sir."
"Yes, Jun, are you ok?"
"No sir. These super people sir." He sighed, "they're fighting sir."
"What! Really! Not again. You be safe Jun. Do not go anywhere near them. You stay away from them Jun."
"Yes sir. I managed to get away. But sir! People died sir."
"Jun, listen to me. You keep yourself safe ok. Things are dangerous out there, do not go anywhere with fighting you hear me?"
"I understand sir. I'm on my way."
The call ended. Jun stared at the call log for a few minutes. He tried Rin's number again and still it went straight to voice mail.
For a moment, Jun imagined someone like Destur laying hands on Rin. His gaze hardened and he allowed anger to fill his heart.
"People like that Destur, they would hurt anyone they please wouldn't they." He spoke out to himself, "He wanted to hurt me. I-I defended myself right?"
Jun took a deep breath. He decided to put away these thoughts and feelings. He would go to work. He would talk to Rin. He decided to move forward for now, even though his feelings still weighed him down.
Jun used the map app. He was just three streets from his office. He hurried, as it wasn't even 8:00am yet.
