"Young master."
Zerkel bowed his head quickly. The next day, the door to the workshop opened. The black-haired boy stepped out, his red eyes pausing on Zerkel for a moment before he took a deep, steadying breath.
Zerkel, who had only recently been promoted to deputy captain, tried to understand the strange feeling he was getting.
He knew his young patron was different from other noble children. It wasn't just his genius or his growing power. It was the cold, watchful look in his eyes.
At first, Zerkel had thought it was just a child pretending to be a grown-up.
Now, that same look sent a shiver down his spine. It was the same look the boy gave the ingredients on his alchemy table, as if he was weighing and measuring everything, calculating the best way to use it and then throw it away.
There were no feelings, just cold, practical thought.
Zerkel was not a fool. He understood that if he ever stopped being useful, this unloved son of the great Rofocale Lucifuge would get rid of him without a second thought.
He had seen it happen to the last deputy captain and to other servants who had made the mistake of disrespecting the boy.
So, Zerkel followed his young master's orders perfectly, and in return, he was rewarded with powerful medicines and a lot of extra money.
Guarding the workshop had been an easy job, but now, looking at the ten-year-old boy, Zerkel knew that this "experiment" had changed him.
There was something unnatural about him now. Zerkel couldn't quite place it. Before, like all demons, the boy had a faint pressure of demonic power around him.
Now… it was gone. Or rather, it felt different. It was as if the boy was a quiet void, a deep well that was gently pulling the air and the world toward him.
Pushing the strange thoughts aside, Zerkel followed his young master toward the mansion.
Inflis had not said a single word since leaving his workshop. He walked through the garden until he suddenly stopped in front of a servant who was trimming the bushes.
As was proper, the low-rank demon immediately bowed when the young noble looked at him.
"Who are you?" Inflis asked. His voice was calm and flat.
"Reynold, a servant of the Great House of Lucifuge, my lord. I was assigned several years ago to take care of the…"
"Lies," Inflis cut him off. "I know the face of every servant in this House. I have never seen yours. Now, tell me the truth. Who are you?"
The servant in the gray uniform began to panic. He looked at Zerkel with pleading eyes.
The armored deputy captain hesitated.
He was about to speak up, to say that he recognized this servant, that the man had worked in the gardens for a decade.
But the next words from Inflis made his hand fly to the handle of his sword.
"Your pathetic illusions are no obstacle for my eyes," the boy said, his voice dripping with contempt.
"I can see what you truly are, you worthless piece of trash."
The "servant" exploded with the bright blue energy of a high-rank demon. His face shifted as the illusion broke, and he lunged toward the perfectly calm young boy.
But Inflis's body seemed to blur and split into several copies, all of which began running in different directions.
The spy, confused for a critical moment, was forced to raise his arms to block the angry swing of Zerkel's sword.
But the disguised demon never got a chance to do anything else. In the next instant, the demonic aura protecting his back vanished, swallowed by a swirl of dark crimson energy.
The real Inflis was now standing behind him. The boy's arm was bent at a strange angle, and then it shot forward in a lightning-fast strike.
A scream ripped through the peaceful garden, which quickly turned into a gurgling, pain-filled howl.
Zerkel stared in shock at the demon writhing on the ground. The man was howling in pain, his back clearly broken.
Just moments before, this same demon had blocked Zerkel's sword with his bare hands.
Zerkel knew that even without a protective aura, a high-rank demon should have been able to easily withstand a blow from a mid-rank fighter like himself.
He looked up and saw a wide, chilling smile spread across Inflis's face as the boy watched the unknown demon's suffering.
Then, Zerkel flinched as those crimson eyes turned to him, the smile instantly vanishing, replaced by a look of cold annoyance.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Inflis snapped. "Sound the alarm. Call a healer. This piece of trash is still useful to us. I need to know who sent him, and if there are any more rats hiding in my house."
"Yes, my lord," Zerkel stammered, scrambling to obey.
….
A familiar tightness spread through my muscles. It was the aftereffect of using the "Tiger's Descent," a special technique that moved energy inside my body.
A smile touched my lips as I flexed my sore hand. I looked down at the spy, or maybe he was a failed killer, who was lying on the ground. He was a fountain of pain and fear, and I could feel it all washing over me.
It was very hard to use these kinds of special techniques when my power level was so low.
They used up a lot of my energy, so I could only do them once or twice in a row.
They also put a lot of strain on my body. But being in a demon's body, which was naturally strong, made the downsides a little easier to handle.
I noticed that my new follower, Zerkel, was just standing there, frozen. I could feel the fear coming off him. It was time to get him moving.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" I snapped, my voice sharp. "Sound the alarm. Call a healer. This piece of trash is still useful to us. I need to know who sent him, and if there are any more rats hiding in my house."
"Yes, my lord," Zerkel stammered. He quickly got over his shock and obeyed.
