An Yan's eyes narrowed. He entered his Focus state, enhanced his strength with his monstrous power, and kicked out, hitting the man's elbow. The force sent the man flying over twenty meters, breaking four or five trees along the way.
Before the dust could settle, a bow and arrow appeared in his hands. An Yan drew his bow, located the man by sound, and fired nine arrows in an instant. Poisonous gas spread, turning the dust cloud green.
However, when the dust cleared, the man was gone.
An Yan knew this was bad. The next moment, a pair of hands shot out from the ground and grabbed his feet. He was pulled into the earth, with only his head remaining above ground.
Earth Style: Headhunter Jutsu!
The man crouched in front of An Yan, his eyes behind the ANBU mask cold and merciless.
"You're a tricky one to catch, little guy."
An Yan heard his voice; he sounded like he was in his thirties or forties.
"Who are you? Why are you attacking me?" An Yan asked, feigning surrender, as if it were just a final, desperate question before death.
The man didn't answer, but asked his own question. "Konoha's artificial tailed beast project has succeeded, hasn't it?"
An Yan frowned. It seems there's a traitor among the researchers.
Seeing An Yan's reaction, the man knew he was right. He reached out to knock him unconscious and take him away.
However, a Rasengan erupted from the ground and slammed into his face, shattering the ANBU mask and revealing a scarred face underneath.
This fake ANBU had been maintaining his hardening jutsu. Although he was hit by a surprise Rasengan, he was mostly unharmed, only stumbling back a few steps.
An Yan's heart sank. This guy was likely a Jonin from one of the great villages. A ninja from a smaller village wouldn't have this kind of composure.
"A no-hand-seal jutsu?"
The man steadied himself. His scarred face was cracked, and ceramic-like pieces of earth fell off, revealing some skin underneath.
It seems the Rasengan broke his defense. An Yan felt a little more confident.
"Your Kage isn't busy consolidating power and dealing with internal conflicts, yet he still has time to send you on a spy mission? Were you sent here to die?" An Yan asked casually. At this time, besides the Sand Village, every other village was in turmoil. It was a period of transition, with the Second Kage dead and the Third just taking over. Each new Kage would need at least four or five years to resolve internal conflicts. They wouldn't have time for external affairs.
This man, although a Jonin, was likely a pawn sent out to die in an internal power struggle, probably having backed the wrong side in the succession.
An Yan's words seemed to have hit a sore spot. The man's aura changed instantly; he was clearly provoked.
The unknown Jonin charged at An Yan with incredible speed. Whether out of confidence or arrogance, he didn't use any long-range ninjutsu, probably wanting to conserve chakra while in a foreign country.

An Yan stood his ground, his hands spread out, a Rasengan forming in each palm.
The man saw this and sneered. He had already taken one Rasengan and knew its power. With his earth hardening jutsu at full power, even two hits in the same spot wouldn't break his defense like before.
The man charged forward, but An Yan didn't hit him with his hands. Instead, he slammed the two Rasengan together.
A massive vortex of air was instantly created. The man couldn't dodge in time and was pulled into the center of the storm. The Wind Style Rasengan was even more powerful than the regular version.
The man tried to escape, his hands digging into the ground, but the powerful suction of the vortex held him fast. He could only watch as his body was slowly pulled back and shredded by the wind blades.
The psychological pressure of watching oneself die is immense. When the man's legs were shredded up to his thighs, he suddenly reached into his ninja tool pouch with one hand, pulled out a stack of explosive tags, and slapped them onto his body.
One hand was not enough to resist the suction of the Wind Style Rasengan. He and the ground beneath him were pulled into the vortex. The explosive tags all ignited; he was trying to take An Yan with him.
An Yan stood there calmly, not moving an inch. The man's face was filled with despair as the explosive tags detonated, engulfing them both in a fiery explosion.
The area within a dozen meters was turned into a sea of flames.
An Yan appeared from a distance, walked over, and collected the man's remains. He had created a shadow clone the moment he first used the Rasengan.
Although he had a revive token, death still consumed his lifespan. An Yan was very afraid of death. He wanted to live as long as he could.
As he was cleaning up the remains, Konoha's ANBU, alerted by the noise, arrived. After questioning An Yan, they took over the situation.
An Yan followed them back to the Intelligence Division and handed over the Jonin's body.
The ninja in the Intelligence Division would be working overtime again. An Yan saw a young man who looked like he was from the Yamanaka clan, yawning as he prepared to start his work.
An Yan sighed. The Intelligence Division seemed to have it much tougher than the other departments.
