Chapter 64 – Morning After

The morning came too softly, too quietly for my liking.

Light crept through the sheer curtains of the room, spilling in slow gold lines across the bed and the carpet. The world outside was alive birds, faint hums of sprinklers, distant sounds of staff beginning their day but inside this room, it felt still. Like the house itself was holding its breath.

I wasn't sure what woke me first the soft laughter of the twins somewhere down the hallway, or the sharp awareness that I was here, still here, after last night.

I rolled over and stared at the ceiling for a long time.

Every piece of it came rushing back in fragments the conversation, the truth, the storm of words and tears that turned into silence so thick we could barely breathe through it. I had seen him differently last night. Not as the man who ruined me, not as the face I once hated, but as someone who had suffered too. Someone who had been lost in the same trap I was.
