When I woke up, it was to the soft rustle of sheets and the faint smell of cedar and warmth.

For a moment, I didn't remember where I was or rather, I didn't want to remember. There was a softness here that didn't belong to the life I used to know.

The morning light poured in through the tall windows, spilling across the bed in lazy stripes. I blinked, squinting against it, then stretched, the silk sheets whispering against my skin.

And then I heard it laughter. Tiny, high-pitched, mischievous.

My heart melted instantly.

The twins.

I sat up too fast, the blanket tumbling off me. From the door came the muffled giggles of two little conspirators clearly trying and failing to whisper.

"Shh, Isla, she'll hear us!"

"Shh, Isla!"

"That's what I said!"

I smiled. Only my daughters could argue while whispering.

"Girls," I called softly, "what are you two doing?"
