Chapter 40 - Chapter 39: Beneath the Western Avenue

The Hollow Stalker turned toward the dark avenue.

Aric understood at once that it was no longer fighting to escape.

It had heard the answering pulse beneath Highglade, and that pulse mattered more to it than the people surrounding it.

The patrol captain rose from the courtyard stones, one hand pressed against her ribs.

"Seal the street!" she shouted.

The guards moved into position.

Halvek pointed toward the city side of the avenue. "No one passes the inner barricade. Send runners to the central district. Tell them the western junction is open."

One of the watchmen hesitated. "Warden, the district commanders won't—"

"Tell them exactly what you saw."

The Hollow Stalker took another step.

Its left knee dragged slightly from Aric's strike. The wound in its shoulder leaked black fluid, but the torn flesh had already begun pulling together.

The System opened.

[Target regeneration detected.]

[Physical structure remains unstable.]

[Weak-point confidence: Low.]

Aric tightened his grip on the broken spear.

The remaining shaft was too short for a proper thrust, but the spearhead could still penetrate if he found the right angle.

The Hollow Stalker looked at him.

"Selisse."

The name came again.

This time, the voice was not a crude imitation. It carried a trace of warmth, a measured cadence, a familiar softness at the end of the word.

Aric's body remembered before his mind did.

The way Selisse spoke when she was trying not to laugh.

The slight pause before saying something she knew would irritate him.

The calm, patient tone she used when he was being stubborn.

The creature had not simply learned the name.

It had found a thread attached to it.

The System flashed.

[Emotional trigger repeated.]

[Target is refining vocal mimicry through observed response.]

[Recommendation: Do not answer.]

Aric forced himself to look at the Hollow Stalker's posture instead of its mouth.

Its weight remained on the right leg.

Its right shoulder was lower.

The ribs on that side moved more slowly than the left.

The creature was regenerating, but not evenly.

"Garran," Aric said.

The caravan leader stood near the courtyard entrance with Lysa beside him.

"What?"

"Keep the guards off its right side."

"Why?"

"Because it's protecting that side."

Garran did not ask how Aric knew.

He turned immediately. "You heard him. Shift left."

The guards moved.

The Hollow Stalker reacted.

Its head snapped toward Garran, and the black ridges along its neck rose.

Then it lunged.

The first guard thrust too early.

The Hollow Stalker struck the spear aside and drove its elbow into the man's chest. He flew backward into the watch-office wall.

The second guard slashed at its ribs.

The creature twisted, letting the blade cut shallowly across the surface.

The patrol captain closed from behind.

Her sword found the wounded shoulder.

The strike went deep.

The Hollow Stalker finally made a sound.

Not a cry.

A dry, grinding note that made the windows tremble.

Aric stepped in.

He drove the broken spearhead beneath the creature's right ribs.

The metal entered.

Not far enough.

The Hollow Stalker seized the shaft.

Its hand closed around the wood with impossible force.

The System responded.

[Contact pressure increasing.]

[Weapon integrity: Critical.]

Aric released the shaft before it could wrench him off balance.

The Hollow Stalker pulled the broken spear free and threw it aside.

The weapon struck the courtyard stones.

Aric was left empty-handed.

The creature's face turned toward him.

"Come."

Its own voice.

No borrowed warmth.

No copied distress.

A direct invitation.

The words carried a strange weight, as though the thing believed Aric had already agreed.

Aric stepped back.

The patrol captain moved between them.

"Get behind me."

"That won't hold it."

"It doesn't have to hold it forever."

The Hollow Stalker charged.

The captain met it head-on.

Her sword struck its chest, but the creature's momentum carried both of them across the courtyard. It slammed her against the sealed well.

The iron ring beneath her back cracked.

Aric saw the lid shift.

The creature was using the captain's body to force the cover open again.

He ran.

Garran shouted his name.

Aric ignored him.

He seized the nearest fallen spear from the guard who had been thrown against the wall. It was longer than his broken weapon and balanced for a trained watchman, but the shaft was still sound.

He reached the well as the Hollow Stalker raised one arm.

Aric thrust into the gap between its shoulder and neck.

The spearhead penetrated.

The creature recoiled.

The patrol captain rolled clear.

The well lid slammed shut beneath them.

The Hollow Stalker seized the spear and dragged Aric forward.

He let go with one hand, gripped the lower shaft, and used the creature's pull against it.

His knee struck the damaged side.

The Hollow Stalker bent.

The captain rose and slashed across its throat.

Black fluid spilled over the iron cover.

The creature staggered away from the well.

The guards attacked from both sides.

For several seconds, the courtyard became a blur of steel, shouting, and black blood.

Aric stayed close to the wounded side.

He did not aim for the chest.

He aimed for the places where the body failed to move cleanly.

Shoulder.

Knee.

Ribs.

The Hollow Stalker adapted.

Each time he struck the same area, it changed its posture.

The System flickered.

[Adaptive response detected.]

[Target is learning combat pattern.]

Aric shifted his approach.

He stopped attacking the right side.

Instead, he feinted toward the shoulder and drove low toward the left ankle.

The spearhead struck bone.

The Hollow Stalker stumbled.

Garran's sword came down across its back.

The patrol captain struck the same line from the opposite side.

The creature dropped to one knee.

The System pulsed.

[Structural instability increased.]

[Potential incapacitation window: Brief.]

"Now!" Aric shouted.

Garran and the captain drove their weapons inward.

The Hollow Stalker twisted.

The sword tore through its side.

The spear punched under the ribs.

The creature folded around both weapons.

For a heartbeat, Aric thought it might finally fall.

Then the central district answered.

A massive pulse rolled through the avenue.

Every lantern went dark.

The street stones lifted half an inch and dropped again.

The Hollow Stalker straightened.

The wounds in its body opened wider.

Not because it was healing.

Because something below was pulling through them.

The System filled Aric's vision.

[Major resonance event.]

[External force interacting with target structure.]

[Target may be acting as a conduit.]

The Hollow Stalker's head tilted backward.

Its mouth opened.

A different voice emerged.

Not Selisse.

Not Aric.

Not any person in the courtyard.

A deep, distant voice rose through the creature as if it were speaking from below the city.

"Open."

The sealed well exploded.

Iron fragments struck the courtyard walls.

The patrol captain threw herself sideways.

Garran covered his face.

Aric was caught by the shockwave and hurled across the stones.

[HP: 183/300.]

He landed on his shoulder.

For several seconds, he could not breathe.

The courtyard floor had split around the well.

A black opening yawned beneath the broken lid.

Cold air surged upward.

It carried the smell of wet earth, old ash, and something metallic.

The Hollow Stalker stood at the edge of the breach.

Its body had changed.

The unstable clay-like skin was pulling apart along the spine, revealing pale structures beneath. Thin lines of dim light ran through its chest and neck.

It was not merely wounded.

It was opening.

Garran reached Aric first.

"Can you stand?"

Aric forced air into his lungs.

"Yes."

"That was not convincing."

"Help me anyway."

Garran hauled him upright.

Across the courtyard, the patrol captain was on one knee. Her sword had been thrown beyond reach.

Halvek shouted from the avenue. "Fall back!"

The guards withdrew toward the street.

The Hollow Stalker turned toward the central district.

The opening below the well widened.

Aric felt something beneath it shift.

More than one thing.

The System opened.

[Multiple subterranean life-signs detected.]

[Count: Increasing.]

[Surface breach probability: 88%.]

The patrol captain retrieved her sword and faced the widening hole.

"If it reaches the avenue, it can move into the lower streets."

"It already has," Aric said.

She looked at him.

"Those resonance traces weren't warnings," he continued. "They were access points."

Halvek heard him. "How many?"

"At least three inside the city."

"Can they all open?"

"I don't know."

"Then we stop this one."

The warden pulled a ring of keys from his coat and threw them to a watchman.

"Open the armory store."

The watchman stared. "For what?"

"Explosives."

Garran turned. "You keep explosives beneath a watch office built over a sealed junction?"

Halvek's expression was grim. "We keep demolition charges for structural emergencies."

"This qualifies."

The Hollow Stalker moved.

Not toward the avenue.

Toward the open breach.

Aric understood what it intended.

It wanted to descend and join whatever waited below.

If it reached the tunnel, the city would lose the only visible target.

"Don't let it go down," Aric said.

The patrol captain nodded. "Positions!"

The guards formed a line.

Aric stood beside Garran.

His HP remained at 183/300, and every breath pulled against the injury in his side. His MP had not changed, but the System still showed full reserve.

The broken spear was gone.

The borrowed watch spear lay several steps away.

Aric ran for it.

The Hollow Stalker reached the breach first.

It placed one hand against the broken edge.

The stones beneath its fingers blackened.

A wave of pressure rolled outward.

The nearest guards stumbled.

Aric reached the spear and seized it just as the creature descended one step into the opening.

He drove the spear into the back of its knee.

The point broke through.

The Hollow Stalker stopped.

It turned its head.

"Aric Frost."

The creature had learned the full shape of his name.

The System responded.

[Identity recognition confirmed.]

[Target intent: Pursuit or recruitment uncertain.]

Aric pulled the spear sideways.

The knee gave.

The Hollow Stalker dropped halfway into the breach.

Garran and the patrol captain attacked together.

The creature caught Garran's sword arm.

The captain's blade cut across its chest.

Aric drove the spear through the lower back.

The three of them forced it toward the edge.

The Hollow Stalker released Garran and struck the captain across the face.

She fell.

Aric stepped closer.

Too close.

The creature's free hand closed around his throat.

His feet left the ground.

[HP: 169/300.]

Its grip tightened.

"West," it said.

Aric clawed at the wrist.

The creature did not squeeze harder.

It held him still.

Behind its eyes, there was no hunger.

No rage.

Only direction.

It wanted him to see the open breach.

To understand where the road continued.

The voice returned.

"Below."

Aric's vision narrowed.

The System flickered at the edge of his sight.

[Threat condition: Critical.]

[Will resistance engaged.]

The pressure in the creature's grip changed.

The word below pushed against his thoughts.

Not an order.

A suggestion that felt like memory.

The dark passage beneath the city.

The buried road.

The voices.

Selisse calling his name from somewhere he could not reach.

Aric forced his focus onto the creature's hand.

Five fingers.

The thumb crossed too far over the palm.

The wrist twisted outward when it exerted force.

A flaw.

He drove his fingers into the joint and turned his body with the motion.

The grip loosened.

Aric fell.

Garran caught him before he hit the stones.

The patrol captain, blood running from her brow, drove her sword into the Hollow Stalker's side.

"Charges!" Halvek shouted.

The watchman returned carrying a metal case.

Halvek tore it open.

Inside were three compact black cylinders wrapped in red cord.

"Everyone back from the well!"

The Hollow Stalker pulled itself upright.

Its knee was damaged.

Its shoulder hung low.

Its chest was torn open.

Still, it remained standing.

The patrol captain looked at Halvek. "Will that kill it?"

"No."

"Then what will it do?"

"Bring the courtyard down."

The Hollow Stalker stepped toward the breach.

Aric looked at the city avenue beyond the courtyard.

People had begun gathering behind the watch barricade.

Shopkeepers.

Travelers.

Children.

If the courtyard collapsed fully, the damage would spread into the street.

"Where is the nearest empty district?" Aric asked.

Halvek answered without hesitation. "The old granary quarter."

"Can we force it there?"

"Not if it reaches the lower road."

Aric studied the Hollow Stalker.

It was still drawn toward the central district.

The signal below was stronger than every other motive.

He looked at the explosive charges.

Then at the broken well.

Then at the creature.

"We don't need to kill it," Aric said.

Garran understood first.

"We drive it back."

"Into the breach."

Halvek stared at him. "The charges will seal the junction only if it is below the collapse line."

"Then make it go down."

The plan was dangerous enough that no one tried to improve it.

The guards spread along the courtyard.

The patrol captain moved left.

Garran moved right.

Aric stood directly in front of the Hollow Stalker.

The creature looked at him.

"Below."

Aric raised the spear.

"No."

The creature charged.

Aric stepped aside at the last moment and struck the damaged knee.

The Hollow Stalker lurched.

Garran slammed his sword into its back.

The patrol captain cut across its ribs.

The creature stumbled toward the breach.

It caught the edge.

One hand held.

Aric drove the spear into its wrist.

The creature turned and struck him across the chest.

He flew backward.

[HP: 151/300.]

Garran roared and buried his blade into the creature's shoulder.

The patrol captain struck the same wound.

The Hollow Stalker's grip slipped.

It fell halfway into the opening.

The dark below answered with a chorus of clicking sounds.

Mimic Hounds.

More than they had encountered beneath the western road.

The Hollow Stalker twisted toward them.

For the first time, its attention broke.

It looked down.

The creatures below were not welcoming it.

They were circling.

Waiting.

The System opened.

[Internal conflict detected.]

[Subterranean entities are not operating under a unified command.]

[Hollow Stalker status: Contested.]

Aric understood.

The larger entity beneath the hills had not been commanding every creature.

It had been drawing them.

The Hollow Stalker was a separate predator responding to the same signal.

That distinction mattered.

The Hounds below surged upward.

The Hollow Stalker released the ledge and dropped.

Its own kind attacked it from below.

Claws tore at its legs.

Its body vanished into the dark.

Halvek shouted, "Now!"

The watchmen planted the charges along the cracked courtyard stones.

Everyone ran for the avenue.

Aric hesitated.

The Hollow Stalker's hand reached up through the opening.

Its fingers hooked over the broken edge.

It looked directly at him.

"Selisse."

The name was quieter now.

Not a lure.

A warning.

Aric backed away.

The charges detonated.

The courtyard floor collapsed inward.

Stone, iron, and black earth fell into the opening.

A wall of dust erupted through the avenue.

Aric was thrown against the outer barricade.

The System filled his vision.

[Structural collapse confirmed.]

[Surface breach sealed.]

[Hostile entity status: Unknown.]

[Confirmed kill condition: Not satisfied.]

The western watch office groaned.

A section of its courtyard wall collapsed, but the main building remained standing.

The avenue filled with dust.

People shouted behind the barricades.

Horses screamed farther down the street.

Aric pushed himself upright.

His chest felt as though it had been struck by a hammer.

[Current HP: 151/300.]

Garran reached him.

"You still standing?"

"Yes."

"Stop answering that way."

Aric looked at the collapsed courtyard.

The well was gone.

So was the Hollow Stalker.

The ground beneath the city had gone quiet.

Not silent.

Quiet.

As if something was listening from farther below.

Halvek emerged from the dust, his coat torn and his face grey.

"Get the street cleared," he ordered. "Move civilians toward the inner square. No one uses the western drains. No one opens a cellar."

The patrol captain wiped blood from her brow.

Then she looked at Aric.

"You said there were at least three access points."

"Yes."

"Then the others may open."

"Yes."

She nodded once.

"Come with me."

Garran stepped between them. "He's injured."

"He is also the only person here who recognized the pattern before the breach."

"He is thirteen."

"I noticed."

Aric looked toward the central district.

The pale glow between the towers had not faded.

If anything, it was brighter.

And somewhere beneath Highglade, the resonance continued.

The patrol captain sheathed her sword.

"We are going to the central watch headquarters."

Aric glanced at Garran.

Garran's expression was unhappy but resigned.

"You're not going alone," he said.

"I didn't ask you to come."

"You don't have to."

Behind them, Mara called from the street.

"Aric!"

He turned.

She stood beside Edren's wagon with Lysa, both of them covered in dust. Edren was awake, looking toward the collapsed courtyard.

Mara's voice lowered when Aric approached.

"Did it say her name?"

Aric stopped.

She had heard.

"Yes."

Mara's eyes searched his face. "Selisse?"

Aric nodded.

"Was she here?"

"No."

"Then how did it know?"

Aric looked toward the towers.

"I don't know."

Edren spoke from the wagon.

"Names travel through old roads."

Everyone looked at him.

His eyes were open, but his expression had gone distant.

"My father used to say that," he continued. "A name spoken above can be heard below."

Mara gripped the edge of the wagon.

Garran looked at Aric.

The System offered no confirmation.

Only a new line.

[Verbal resonance principle detected.]

[Certain identifiers may function as navigational anchors within linked structures.]

Aric's attention fixed on the city center.

The Hollow Stalker had not merely used Selisse's name to distract him.

It might have been following a resonance connected to her.

Or the creature might have spoken the name because it had touched something beneath Highglade that knew her.

Neither possibility was acceptable.

The patrol captain started toward the central district.

Aric followed.

Behind him, Garran ordered the caravan guards to remain together.

Ahead, Highglade's towers darkened against the evening sky.

And under the paving stones, something began to call in a voice Aric could not yet identify.
