The western gate closed behind them with a heavy boom.
Aric heard the sound travel through the stone before it faded into the city's noise.
Highglade was louder than he remembered.
Carts rattled over uneven paving. Vendors called from under striped awnings. Bells rang somewhere deeper in the city. Horses snorted, children shouted, and messengers hurried through the crowds with sealed packets tucked beneath their arms.
Yet beneath it all, he felt the same pressure that had followed them from the hills.
Not strong enough to shake the street.
Strong enough to remind him that the city stood on something old.
The patrol captain led them down a broad avenue toward the western watch office. The building had been constructed into the inner wall, its lower stones darker than the upper floors. Narrow windows looked toward the road. Iron lanterns hung from brackets even though sunset had not yet fully arrived.
Garran kept the caravan moving in a tight line.
"Stay close," he told the guards. "No wandering. No arguments with the city watch."
One of the younger guards muttered, "That last one should be directed at you."
Garran did not turn around. "I heard that."
Aric walked beside the damaged wagon.
Mara sat inside with Edren, one hand around his wrist. The city's movement seemed to agitate him. His eyes opened every time a stranger passed too close.
The System remained quiet.
That was almost worse than an alert.
At the watch office, the patrol captain dismounted.
"Bring the injured inside first," she ordered. "The rest of you wait in the courtyard."
Garran looked at Aric.
Aric nodded once.
Mara and Edren were taken through the main doors with Lysa and two guards. Garran remained outside with the rest of the caravan.
Aric stepped into the courtyard.
The walls were high enough to hide the street beyond. A stone well stood in the center, sealed with an iron cover. Three watchmen occupied the balcony above, watching the caravan with the cautious interest of people who had heard an unusual report but not yet decided whether to believe it.
The patrol captain entered the office.
A minute later, another officer came out.
He was older, broad across the shoulders, and wore a dark blue coat instead of armor. A silver chain rested over his chest, bearing the western district insignia.
His eyes went first to Garran.
Then to Aric.
"Which one is Aric Frost?"
Aric stepped forward.
The officer studied him without speaking.
He seemed more surprised by Aric's age than by his injuries.
"You're younger than expected."
"So I've been told."
Garran gave him a warning look.
The officer ignored it. "I'm Warden Halvek. You'll answer questions inside."
"Will everyone answer?"
"The caravan leader and the direct witnesses."
"Then Garran should come."
Halvek's brow lifted. "You give instructions quickly."
"He knows the route and the people."
"And you know the creature."
Aric did not answer.
Halvek motioned toward the door. "Both of you."
Inside, the watch office smelled of ink, oil, and damp stone. A long table occupied the center of the room. Maps covered the walls. Some showed the western road and surrounding hills. Others displayed the city itself in layered districts.
Aric noticed something immediately.
The oldest map had no central district.
At its center was a blank circle surrounded by concentric lines.
He looked at it for half a second too long.
Halvek noticed.
"You recognize something?"
"No."
"Then stop staring at it."
Aric turned away.
Garran sat at the table. Aric remained standing.
Halvek took the seat opposite them. The patrol captain stood at his right.
"Start with the waystation," Halvek said.
Garran described the riderless horse, the damaged guards, the discovery of Mara and Edren, and the first attacks. He kept his account factual and omitted nothing important.
When he reached the hidden tunnel, the patrol captain interrupted.
"How did you discover it?"
"Edren told us there was a sealed storage route."
Halvek looked toward Aric. "And what did you find below?"
"Mimic Hounds."
"Define them."
"Predatory creatures capable of reproducing familiar voices. They use emotional responses to manipulate movement."
"Do they understand language?"
"They understand enough to make people hesitate."
The patrol captain wrote that down.
Halvek folded his hands. "How many did you kill?"
Aric counted carefully.
"Several at the waystation and below it."
"That is not a number."
"Some bodies were lost in the collapse."
Halvek's gaze sharpened. "How many did you personally kill?"
Aric answered with the confirmed count from the immediate record.
"Seven."
Garran turned slightly toward him.
The number matched the kills confirmed across the recent encounters, excluding the unconfirmed wounded creature lost in the collapse.
Halvek's pen stopped.
"Seven."
"Yes."
"And the larger entity?"
"Not a Mimic Hound."
"What was it?"
"Unclassified."
"Did it speak?"
"Yes."
"In what voice?"
"None that it borrowed."
That drew silence.
Halvek looked at the patrol captain.
She did not look surprised.
Aric noticed.
"You've heard of something similar," he said.
Halvek's eyes returned to him. "We've heard reports."
"From where?"
"That is not your concern."
"It is if the same thing is beneath the city."
Garran's hand moved slightly on the table.
A warning.
Not to stop speaking.
To choose the next words carefully.
Halvek leaned back. "You entered Highglade less than an hour ago. You are injured, exhausted, carrying a broken weapon, and already telling a district warden how to do his work."
"The birds were already inside the city."
The patrol captain's expression changed.
Halvek glanced toward the window.
"Which birds?"
"The ones following us."
"Where are they now?"
"Center district."
The room became very still.
One of the clerks near the wall hurried to the window and looked upward.
Aric could not see the sky from that angle, but he felt a faint vibration pass through the floor.
The System opened.
[Resonance trace detected.]
[Source proximity: Within current structure.]
[Direction: Downward.]
Aric looked at the sealed well in the courtyard beyond the office wall.
The signal was coming from below the watch office.
Not from the central district.
Not from the old foundations farther inside the city.
Here.
Halvek noticed his attention shift. "What is it?"
"Your well."
The patrol captain immediately turned toward the door.
Halvek stood. "What about it?"
"It is part of the same network."
The warden walked to the office window and looked into the courtyard. The iron cover remained closed.
"What network?"
"The one beneath the western road."
The System pulsed again.
[Structural resonance increasing.]
[Subterranean activity: Active.]
The patrol captain drew her sword.
Halvek did not.
Instead, he called to the guards outside.
"Clear the courtyard."
The order had barely been shouted when the sealed well rang from within.
Once.
Twice.
The iron cover lifted half an inch.
Every guard in the courtyard drew a weapon.
Mara appeared in the doorway with Lysa behind her.
Edren was still on the stretcher, pale and sweating.
"What happened?" Mara asked.
"Back inside," Garran said.
The cover rose another inch.
A sound came from below.
Not a voice.
A slow scrape of something dragging against stone.
The System displayed:
[Life-Sign Detection: Inconclusive.]
[Multiple signatures overlapping.]
[Immediate emergence probability: 64%.]
Halvek's face hardened. "Seal the well."
Two guards moved forward with a long iron bar.
Aric stepped into the courtyard.
Garran caught his arm. "Wait."
"The cover won't hold."
"You don't know that."
"I do."
The bar struck the iron lid.
The well answered with a violent impact from below.
The two guards were thrown backward.
The lid jumped.
A pale limb punched through the gap.
It was smaller than the one that had struck the caravan, but its hand ended in the same dark hooks.
A guard screamed.
The patrol captain slashed down and severed two fingers.
The limb recoiled.
Black fluid spilled across the lid.
The System responded.
[Target partially exposed.]
[Classification unavailable.]
[No confirmed kill.]
Halvek shouted, "Get the civilians inside!"
Mara pulled Edren backward.
Lysa moved between them and the well.
Garran seized a fallen guard and dragged him clear.
Aric looked at the iron cover.
The limb had not attacked randomly.
It had tested the lid.
The same way the larger entity had tested the surface near the streambed.
He turned toward the map room.
The old city map.
The blank circle.
The concentric lines.
The well below the western watch office sat exactly where one of the old lines would have crossed the western wall.
The watch office had been built on a junction.
Aric ran inside.
"Aric!" Garran shouted.
Aric ignored him.
He reached the map and tore it from the wall.
The parchment was older than the building. Its lower corner had been folded and sealed with black wax.
He broke the seal.
A second layer unfolded.
The blank circle at the center of the city was not blank.
Beneath the fold was a symbol.
Three descending lines.
A circle.
A broken gate.
Around it, written in faded ink, were four words.
Do not open below.
The floor trembled.
Aric carried the map back toward the courtyard.
Halvek saw it. "What did you find?"
"A warning."
"That is not useful."
"It tells you this office is built over a sealed junction."
Halvek stared at the symbol.
The patrol captain's face had gone pale.
"You know it," Aric said.
She did not answer.
The well cover rose again.
This time, a second limb appeared.
Then a third.
The courtyard guards backed away.
The air filled with the dry clicking sound Aric had heard in the tunnels.
Something below was calling.
The System opened a new warning.
[Multiple hostile signatures converging.]
[Surface breach imminent.]
[Recommended action: Evacuate the structure.]
Halvek finally drew his sword.
"To the street," he ordered. "Everyone out."
Garran helped Mara move Edren.
Lysa covered the retreat.
Aric remained near the well.
The patrol captain stopped beside him.
"You've seen this before," Aric said.
"Not here."
"But you know what it means."
Her jaw tightened. "The western watch office was built over an old foundation chamber. We were told the lower levels had collapsed."
"They didn't."
"No."
The well cover flew off.
A creature hauled itself into the courtyard.
It was not a Mimic Hound.
Its torso was narrow and stretched, its limbs too long for its body, and its skin looked like wet clay over a framework of pale bone. Its head turned toward Aric.
The voice that came from it was its own.
"Frost."
The patrol captain raised her sword.
Aric's broken spear felt useless in his hand.
The creature looked past him, toward the street and the city beyond.
Then it smiled.
Not because it recognized him.
Because it recognized the direction.
The center of Highglade.
The System flashed.
[Unknown entity identified.]
[Temporary designation: Hollow Stalker.]
[Threat level: High.]
[Confirmed classification: Pending.]
The creature stepped forward.
Aric thrust with the broken spear.
The spearhead entered its chest and stopped against something dense beneath the skin.
The Hollow Stalker looked down at the weapon.
Then back at Aric.
The patrol captain struck from the side.
Her blade cut deep into its ribs.
The creature staggered.
Halvek shouted from the street. "Move!"
Aric ripped the spear free.
The Hollow Stalker answered with a sound that was almost a laugh.
Then it spoke in a new voice.
Not borrowed from the caravan.
Not copied from the watch.
A voice from somewhere inside the city.
"Selisse."
Aric froze.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But the creature noticed.
Its arm shot forward.
The patrol captain intercepted the blow, but the impact sent her across the courtyard.
Aric seized the broken spear with both hands.
The System opened.
[Emotional trigger detected.]
[Target has selected a personally significant identifier.]
[Manipulation probability: 97%.]
Aric forced his attention back to the creature's body.
Not the voice.
Not the name.
The body.
The shoulder was wounded. The left knee carried less weight. The creature's right side turned slower than the left.
He drove the broken spearhead into the damaged knee.
The Hollow Stalker bent.
Halvek and two guards rushed in.
Steel struck from three directions.
The creature reeled toward the open street.
Aric shouted, "Don't let it reach the center!"
The patrol captain recovered and rose.
"Seal the avenue!"
The guards moved to block the road.
The Hollow Stalker looked beyond them.
Toward the heart of Highglade.
Then, from beneath the city, something answered its call.
A low pulse rolled through the paving stones.
The lanterns along the avenue went dark.
The System displayed:
[Major resonance event detected.]
[Central district response confirmed.]
The Hollow Stalker stopped fighting.
It did not need to escape.
It had already been heard.
Aric looked down the dark avenue.
Far away, beyond the first line of buildings, a pale glow rose between the towers.
Not from the sky.
From beneath the streets.
And somewhere in that direction, a voice called again.
This time, it sounded like Selisse.
Not a perfect imitation.
A summons.
The Hollow Stalker turned toward it.
Aric tightened his grip on the broken spear.
The city gates had closed behind them.
The threat beneath Highglade had opened instead.
