The footsteps came from inside the academy.
Not beneath it.
Above.
They sounded measured and unhurried, moving through the dark corridor beyond the closing doors.
One step.
Then another.
The academy guards held their line.
Students crowded behind them, whispering, crying, calling for instructors who had already begun directing people toward the inner halls.
Selisse stood beside Aric.
Caelan remained on her other side.
Darian had drawn his sword, but the confidence that had filled him in the square was gone. He kept looking toward the corridor as if the darkness had become an accusation.
The patrol captain raised her blade.
"No one moves forward without my order."
The footsteps continued.
Aric watched the open doorway.
The corridor beyond was lined with tall windows, but the lamps had gone out. Pale moonlight fell across the floor in narrow strips. At the far end stood a stairwell leading toward the academy's older wing.
The System opened.
[Auditory pattern detected.]
[Footsteps: Humanoid cadence.]
[Weight estimate: Inconsistent.]
[Origin point: Unresolved.]
The next step came from the left side of the corridor.
Then the right.
Then directly ahead.
The patrol captain's grip tightened.
"It's moving without crossing the floor."
"Or there is more than one," Aric said.
Darian glanced at him. "That is not helpful."
"It wasn't meant to be."
Selisse looked toward the corridor. "The footsteps I heard before always stopped at the east stair."
"Did you ever see anyone?" Aric asked.
"No."
"Did they follow when you left?"
"Not beyond the archway."
Caelan spoke quietly. "The wardens searched the corridor."
"And found nothing?" Aric asked.
"They found old stonework and a sealed service stair."
Aric's attention sharpened. "Where?"
Caelan pointed toward the far wall.
A narrow arch stood behind a hanging academy banner. The stone around it was older than the rest of the corridor, darker and more weathered. A horizontal iron bar had been fixed across the opening.
The same symbol marked its lintel.
Three descending lines.
A circle.
A broken gate.
The System responded.
[Resonance trace detected.]
[Sealed access point.]
[Barrier condition: Compromised.]
The iron bar moved.
Not much.
Enough to make a dry metallic scrape.
Selisse stepped closer to Aric. "That wasn't happening before."
"Because the anchor was outside," he said.
"Me?"
"Possibly."
The patrol captain heard him. "Explain."
Aric kept his attention on the bar. "The system beneath the city responds when Selisse is nearby. It used her name at the watch office. The fountain creatures were drawn to her. Now the sealed stair is reacting."
Darian's face hardened. "Then she should be removed from the academy."
Selisse turned on him. "I am standing here."
"That is the problem."
"It is only a problem because you keep speaking as though I am luggage."
Caelan cut in before the exchange sharpened. "Arguing will not stop the door."
The footsteps stopped.
The corridor fell silent.
Aric heard breathing.
Not one person.
Several.
Somewhere beyond the sealed stair.
The System opened.
[Multiple life-signs detected.]
[Depth: Shallow.]
[Classification: Inconclusive.]
The iron bar lifted by itself.
It dropped to the floor.
Several students screamed.
The academy guards stepped back.
The patrol captain took position in front of Selisse.
"Everyone behind the second line."
Aric looked at the doorway.
"Do not let the crowd press against the walls."
"What?" one of the instructors asked.
"The old structures connect through the foundations."
The instructor stared at him.
A crack appeared along the corridor floor.
It followed the wall instead of the center.
Aric remembered the waystation.
The creatures had not always attacked where the people stood. They had attacked where the structure was weakest.
"Move away from the walls," he repeated.
The patrol captain issued the order.
The students shuffled toward the center of the hall.
A section of plaster fell from the left wall.
Behind it was a narrow cavity filled with packed earth and old stone.
Something moved inside.
A hand pressed against the soil.
Then another.
The academy guards raised their weapons.
The hands withdrew.
The footsteps resumed from the sealed stair.
This time, a voice came with them.
"Selisse Veylin."
Selisse inhaled sharply.
The voice was human.
Male.
Young.
The cadence was familiar enough that Caelan's expression changed.
Darian looked toward him. "Do you know that voice?"
Caelan did not answer immediately.
Aric noticed.
"Who is it?" he asked.
Caelan kept his eyes on the dark corridor.
"My brother."
Darian turned. "Your brother is in the northern wing."
"Was."
The single word carried more weight than an explanation.
Selisse looked at Caelan. "You said he was studying in the archive hall."
"That was before the bells."
"Where is he now?"
"I don't know."
The voice came again.
"Selisse Veylin."
This time it sounded closer.
Then:
"Caelan."
The corridor lights flared.
A figure stood beneath the far arch.
At first, it appeared to be a young man in academy clothing.
His posture was familiar.
His head tilted slightly to one side.
His left sleeve was torn.
Caelan took one step forward.
"Edrin?"
The figure smiled.
Aric's attention narrowed.
The System opened.
[Vocal and visual pattern detected.]
[Identity resemblance: High.]
[Biological confirmation: Unavailable.]
[Warning: External mimicry probability elevated.]
Aric raised the spearhead. "Don't go closer."
Caelan stopped.
The figure in the archway lifted one hand.
"Brother."
Caelan's face drained of color.
Selisse looked from him to Aric. "What is wrong?"
"It may not be him."
The figure took one step into the light.
The face was young and ordinary.
Too ordinary.
The eyes did not blink.
The mouth moved slightly after the words had already ended.
Aric had seen that kind of delay before.
The System confirmed it.
[Facial-voice synchronization: Inconsistent.]
[Imitation probability: 91%.]
"Caelan," the figure said again. "Come below."
Caelan gripped his sword.
Darian moved to block him.
"Don't."
"You heard him."
"I heard something wearing his voice."
The figure's smile widened.
Not naturally.
The corners rose too far.
The academy guards began to retreat.
A low vibration moved through the floor.
The old stone under the corridor answered.
Aric looked toward Selisse.
Her eyes were fixed on the figure.
"Have you met him?" Aric asked.
"No."
"Then why does it know your name?"
"I don't know."
"Has your family ever used this academy's lower passages?"
Selisse hesitated.
Caelan answered for her.
"Old family records mention service tunnels beneath the academy."
"Why didn't you tell me that before?" Selisse asked.
"Because I thought they were sealed."
The figure's head rotated slightly.
The movement was small.
Wrong enough to reveal the neck had no proper joints.
The System displayed:
[Temporary designation: Echo Husk.]
[Threat level: Moderate.]
[Behavior: Identity lure.]
The figure opened its mouth.
Three voices emerged together.
"Selisse."
"Caelan."
"Aric."
The crowd recoiled.
Aric felt the pressure of each name against his thoughts, but the sound was weaker than the Hollow Stalker's attempt.
His Will resisted.
The System confirmed:
[Will resistance successful.]
The patrol captain gave the order.
"Strike."
The academy guards rushed the corridor.
The Echo Husk did not retreat.
It stood and allowed the first sword to pass through its shoulder.
The blade met little resistance.
The second guard struck the chest.
The figure bent around the weapon.
Its limbs stretched.
The shape of the young man broke apart like wet paper.
The guards faltered.
The Echo Husk seized one by the throat and slammed him into the wall.
The wall cracked.
Aric moved.
He drove the spearhead into the creature's elbow joint.
The arm folded.
The guard dropped free.
The Echo Husk turned toward Aric.
Its face had changed.
The features were still vaguely human, but the skin had thinned over the cheekbones. The mouth opened wider than before.
"Below," it said.
Aric stepped inside its reach and struck the sternum.
The spearhead pierced.
The creature did not react as a living body should.
It wrapped one arm around the shaft and pulled.
Aric released the weapon.
The Echo Husk dragged the spearhead free and threw it aside.
The System opened.
[Target anatomy remains unstable.]
[Piercing damage reduced.]
The patrol captain cut across its back.
Darian attacked from the right.
Caelan drove his sword into the creature's thigh.
The Echo Husk staggered.
For an instant, its face returned to the young man's features.
Caelan froze.
"Edrin."
The figure looked at him.
"Brother."
It reached out.
Caelan's sword lowered by a fraction.
Aric saw the opening.
He seized Caelan's shoulder and pulled him aside as the creature's hand shot forward.
The claws missed Caelan's throat by inches.
Caelan stumbled into Aric.
"You were right," he said.
"I know."
"Don't say that now."
The Echo Husk twisted toward them.
Selisse stepped forward.
"Edrin," she said.
Caelan looked at her sharply.
"What are you doing?"
"Testing it."
The creature stopped.
Selisse held its gaze.
"Tell me something only he would know."
The Echo Husk's mouth moved.
Nothing came out.
The System opened.
[Identity challenge detected.]
[Response delay increasing.]
Selisse continued, "What did he break in the north garden when we were children?"
Caelan's expression changed.
The creature looked between them.
Its head tilted.
"North garden."
"That isn't an answer."
The Echo Husk's skin rippled.
It began to speak in fragments.
"White stone. Rain. You cried."
Selisse's face went still.
Caelan lowered his sword.
"That happened."
Aric looked at him. "That proves nothing."
The creature turned toward Selisse.
"Come below."
Selisse did not move.
"What did he call me when he was angry?" she asked.
The Echo Husk's mouth opened.
The answer came too quickly.
"Selisse."
Caelan's face hardened.
"He never called her that."
The creature paused.
Selisse's eyes narrowed.
"What did he call me?"
The Echo Husk began to tremble.
Its borrowed face cracked along the jaw.
A dark fluid seeped through the splits.
Caelan raised his sword.
"Now."
The patrol captain struck first.
Her blade cut through the neck.
Darian followed with a downward thrust.
Aric stepped in with a fallen guard's short sword and drove it through the creature's chest.
The Echo Husk convulsed.
The figure's face shifted through several identities in rapid succession.
A young man.
An old woman.
A child.
Selisse.
Aric.
Then blank skin.
The creature collapsed.
The System flashed.
[Target incapacitated.]
[Temporary designation: Echo Husk.]
[Confirmed kill condition satisfied.]
[EXP Awarded: 24.]
Aric waited.
The System did not announce a level increase.
The points remained unchanged.
[Level: 17]
[Current HP: 340/340]
[Current MP: 120/120]
[Unallocated stat points: 3]
The floor beneath the dead creature began to split.
Not from the impact.
From below.
The old stairwell opened another inch.
Cold air moved through the corridor.
A whisper traveled with it.
Not a name this time.
A sentence.
"Three doors remain."
Caelan stared at the darkness beyond the stair.
"What does that mean?"
Aric looked at the stone symbol above the arch.
The broken gate.
A path.
A lock.
A number.
The System responded.
[Structural sequence detected.]
[Known access points within academy quarter: Three.]
[Current access point: One.]
The patrol captain turned toward Halvek, who had entered the corridor with two watchmen.
"Three doors?"
Halvek had heard the whisper.
His expression changed.
"We knew of two."
Aric looked at him. "Then you were wrong."
The warden's jaw tightened.
"Or the city has forgotten one."
Selisse moved beside Aric.
For the first time since the breach, she stood close enough that their shoulders nearly touched.
"You came back," she said quietly.
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't know I was coming back."
"That is not the same thing."
"No."
She looked toward the dark stair.
"Are you going below?"
"I may have to."
"You always say that as if the choice belongs only to you."
Aric turned toward her.
The corridor was full of guards, students, noble heirs, and frightened instructors.
Yet for a moment, the rest of the world fell away.
"I didn't want to bring this to you," he said.
Selisse's expression softened, but only slightly.
"You didn't bring it."
"Then why is it using your name?"
She looked at the stair.
"I don't know."
The answer was honest.
It was also the one he feared most.
A distant bell sounded from the center of Highglade.
Then another answered from the academy's western tower.
The floor trembled.
The System opened.
[Resonance chain expanding.]
[New source detected: Northern archive quarter.]
[Threat status: Escalating.]
Halvek swore.
The patrol captain turned to the guards. "Seal the academy gates. Evacuate the lower halls. No one enters the stairwell."
The stairwell door moved.
Something on the other side placed a hand against it.
The wood bowed inward.
Selisse looked at Aric.
"What now?"
Aric picked up the fallen spearhead and the short sword.
The old corridor had three doors.
One had opened.
A second resonance had already awakened in the northern archive quarter.
And the third remained somewhere in the academy, waiting.
"We find the other two before they open," he said.
The hand behind the stairwell door tightened.
The wood cracked.
A voice spoke through it.
This one was not borrowed from anyone present.
It sounded like a child trying to remember how adults spoke.
"Aric Frost."
The door began to open.
