Chapter 42 - Chapter 41: The Name Beneath the Fountain

"Aric?"

Selisse's voice crossed the square through the panic.

It was not loud.

It did not need to be.

He knew it immediately.

The pale hand rising from the fountain paused beneath the black water.

For one impossible breath, the noise of the academy square seemed to pull away from them.

Aric saw Selisse clearly for the first time in too long.

She looked older than the memory he carried, though he knew that was not true. The difference was in the way she held herself now—shoulders straighter, chin lifted, one hand still half-raised from where the nobleman had caught her arm.

Her expression had gone from disbelief to certainty.

He was really there.

Dust covered his clothes. Blood darkened the side of his shirt. He carried a watchman's spear instead of the weapon she had once seen him train with.

Behind her, the fountain split wider.

The academy guards shouted.

A surge of black water struck the edge of the basin and spilled across the paving stones.

"Move!" the patrol captain ordered.

The command broke the moment.

Students scattered in every direction.

Instructors began herding them toward the academy steps. The nobleman nearest Selisse reached for her again, but she stepped away from him before he could touch her.

The second young man moved toward her instead.

Aric noticed the difference immediately.

The first man acted as though he expected obedience.

The second watched her face before making a decision.

The System opened.

[Multiple surface signatures detected.]

[Primary subterranean emergence: Active.]

[Identity anchor proximity: Immediate.]

[Environmental threat: Escalating.]

The pale hand rose higher.

A wrist.

Then a forearm covered in slick, grey-black skin.

It was not the Hollow Stalker.

The proportions were wrong.

Shorter.

Thicker.

The fingers ended in flattened claws, and the joints bent too many times.

A second hand broke the water.

Then a third.

The patrol captain raised her sword. "Aric, with me!"

He did not move.

Selisse was still across the square.

He had imagined this meeting in quieter places.

At an academy corridor.

On a road beneath the trees.

In some courtyard where the world would give them enough time to speak before demanding something from them.

Instead, the city had placed her in front of him with a breach opening under her feet.

Garran seized his shoulder.

"Aric."

He looked at Selisse.

Her lips formed his name again, but no sound came through the alarm bells.

Then the stone beneath her shifted.

Aric moved.

He sprinted across the square.

The patrol captain swore and followed.

The nobleman in silver stepped between Aric and Selisse.

"Stay back."

Aric stopped a few paces away.

The young man's posture was polished, trained, and entirely unsuited to the creature climbing out of the fountain.

"You heard me," he said. "This is an academy security matter."

"Then secure it," Aric replied.

The nobleman's face tightened.

A crack split the paving stones between them.

Selisse stepped forward. "Darian, move."

The nobleman glanced at her. "You know him?"

"Yes."

"From where?"

"Move."

The answer was not loud, but it carried enough force that he stepped aside.

The second young man gave Aric a brief nod and moved to Selisse's other side.

The creature hauled itself over the fountain rim.

Its body was low and broad, with a spine that rose in a ridge of blunt plates. Water poured from its limbs. Its head had no visible eyes, only four narrow slits that opened and closed along the front of its face.

The System responded.

[Temporary designation: Flood Maw.]

[Threat level: Moderate-High.]

[Behavior: Surface breach and anchor-seeking.]

The creature turned toward Selisse.

Not toward the nearest person.

Toward her.

Aric stepped between them.

The Flood Maw opened its mouth.

The sound that came out was not a roar.

It was a wet exhalation shaped into a familiar word.

"Selisse."

She went still.

The nobleman in silver looked at her sharply.

The second young man drew his sword.

Aric's grip tightened on the borrowed spear.

The System flashed.

[Identity-anchor targeting confirmed.]

[Manipulation risk: High.]

The Flood Maw lunged.

Aric thrust at the center of its chest.

The spearhead entered but slid across something hard beneath the skin.

The impact drove him backward.

The creature's forelimb struck the shaft and snapped it near the grip.

Aric kept the spearhead in his hands as the broken length spun away.

The Flood Maw opened its mouth again.

"Below."

The word pressed against his thoughts.

He felt the same downward pull he had experienced at the western watch office, but weaker this time.

Not a command.

An invitation.

The System responded.

[Will resistance engaged.]

Aric forced his feet to hold.

The patrol captain attacked from the side.

Her blade cut through one of the plated ridges along the creature's back. Dark fluid spilled across the stones.

The Flood Maw twisted and struck her with its tail.

She was thrown toward the academy steps.

The second young man moved before anyone else.

He caught her wrist, braced, and kept her from going over the edge.

The nobleman in silver stared at the creature.

"Why is it saying her name?"

"Because it wants her," Aric said.

"Why?"

"Ask it."

The nobleman did not appreciate the answer.

Selisse did.

Her attention never left the creature.

"What does it want me to do?" she asked.

"Nothing."

"That has never stopped anything from wanting."

The Flood Maw lunged again.

Aric stepped aside and drove the broken spearhead into the side of its neck.

This time the point found softer material.

The creature shrieked.

The sound shook the academy windows.

Students cried out from the stairs.

The System opened.

[Partial penetration confirmed.]

[Target anatomy inconsistent with known terrestrial classifications.]

[Weak point probable: Cervical channel.]

Aric twisted the spearhead.

The Flood Maw thrashed.

A claw caught his side.

Pain flashed through him.

[HP: 137/300.]

He lost his grip and fell to one knee.

The creature raised its forelimb.

Selisse stepped forward.

"Stop."

The word was not directed at Aric.

It was directed at the creature.

The Flood Maw froze.

Everyone in the square saw it.

The pause was brief, but unmistakable.

The creature had responded to her voice.

Not because it understood the command.

Because the sound itself mattered.

The System opened.

[Identity-anchor response intensified.]

[Voice resonance detected.]

Selisse's face changed as she realized the same thing.

"It can hear me," she said.

"It can use you," Aric replied.

"Those are not the same."

"No."

She looked at him.

For a moment, the chaos around them receded again.

"You're hurt."

"So are you."

"I'm not."

"Then you're still you."

Something flickered across her face.

Not a smile.

Not yet.

Recognition.

The kind that came from hearing an old rhythm return.

The Flood Maw moved again.

The second young man stepped forward, sword raised.

"Get her back," he said.

Aric glanced at him. "Who are you?"

"Caelan Veylin."

The surname struck him before the rest of the sentence finished.

Veylin.

Selisse's family.

The connection was immediate.

A brother? Cousin? Relative? Aric did not know, and he would not invent it.

Caelan's eyes shifted from Aric to Selisse and back again.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"Aric Frost."

The silver-clad nobleman gave a short, humorless laugh.

"So this is the famous—"

"Darian," Selisse said sharply.

He stopped.

Aric stored the name without comment.

Darian turned toward the creature instead.

"This thing is in the academy square because of her."

"No," Aric said. "It was already coming."

"And it found her."

"Those are different."

"Are they?"

The Flood Maw slammed both forelimbs into the fountain.

The stone basin broke apart.

A column of black water erupted into the air.

The wave struck everyone in the square.

Aric was thrown across the paving stones.

[HP: 124/300.]

He landed beside a fallen academy bench.

Selisse disappeared behind the spray.

The world became water, shouting, and ringing metal.

Aric forced himself upright.

The System struggled to process the overlapping signatures.

[Environmental obstruction detected.]

[Visual tracking degraded.]

[Identity-anchor signal remains active.]

He heard Selisse call his name.

Not from where he had seen her.

From somewhere behind him.

He turned.

Nothing.

The sound came again.

"Aric!"

The voice was perfect.

Too perfect.

He froze.

The System flashed.

[Vocal imitation detected.]

[Source location false.]

The Flood Maw was learning quickly.

Aric closed his eyes.

He listened instead of looking.

Water striking stone.

Academy guards shouting.

The patrol captain issuing orders.

Garran yelling from the far side of the square.

And beneath it all, the real Selisse breathing hard to his left.

He moved toward the breathing.

A claw swept through the water where his head had been.

Aric drove the broken spearhead upward.

The metal entered the creature's lower jaw.

The Flood Maw reared.

This time, the wound held.

The System responded.

[Weak point confirmed.]

[Target stability compromised.]

Aric pulled down with both hands.

The creature's head struck the stone.

The impact broke one of the narrow slits along its face.

Black fluid poured over the paving stones.

The System displayed:

[Target incapacitated.]

[Temporary designation: Flood Maw.]

[Confirmed kill condition satisfied.]

[EXP Awarded: 42.]

The Flood Maw stopped moving.

The black water around it continued to ripple.

Then the fountain's broken foundation answered with a deep pulse.

The body did not rise.

But something beneath it did.

A line of darkness traveled through the water toward the academy steps.

Toward Selisse.

Aric saw it first.

"Move!"

Selisse turned.

The water beneath her feet opened into a narrow black slit.

Caelan grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

Darian reached for her other side.

Aric crossed the distance in three strides and drove the spearhead into the stone directly over the slit.

The point struck something below.

The darkness recoiled.

The System opened.

[Subterranean contact detected.]

[Surface conduit interrupted.]

[Secondary emergence delayed.]

Caelan stared at the spearhead embedded in the paving stone.

"You can stop it?"

"For a few seconds."

"That is not reassuring."

"It wasn't meant to be."

The patrol captain reached them, blood still running down one side of her face.

"Is it dead?"

Aric looked at the Flood Maw.

[Confirmed kill condition: Satisfied.]

"Yes."

The System updated.

[Level threshold reached.]

[Level increased: 16 → 17.]

[Current HP restored to 100% of maximum.]

[Maximum HP increased.]

[Maximum MP increased.]

[Unallocated stat points awarded: 3.]

Aric's breath caught.

The familiar warmth spread through his body, but this time it arrived with a sharper edge. The exhaustion in his limbs receded. The damage in his ribs remained as pain, but his strength returned enough to stand fully.

The System displayed the new totals.

[Level: 17]

[HP: 340/340]

[MP: 120/120]

[Unallocated stat points: 3]

The changes were larger than the previous level.

Aric looked at the numbers.

He had not expected the increase to be so significant.

The System offered no formula.

Only the result.

Garran reached him through the crowd.

"You just stood up faster than you should have."

"I leveled."

Garran stared.

The word meant nothing to him, but the change in Aric's posture did.

"What happened?"

"Later."

The slit beneath the academy stones began to widen again.

The patrol captain pointed at the broken fountain. "We need to clear the square."

The instructors began moving students toward the academy's inner halls.

Selisse remained where she was.

Aric pulled the spearhead free from the stone.

The black mark beneath it vanished.

He turned toward her.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

The last time they had been in the same place, he had been younger, less certain, and still pretending that distance could not change the shape of an engagement.

Now he stood in the middle of a shattered academy square, covered in blood and black water, while noble families, guards, and students watched.

Selisse stepped closer.

"You disappeared."

The words held no accusation.

That made them worse.

"I had to leave."

"You sent no proper message."

"I tried."

"Letters do not count if they arrive months late."

Aric did not know what to say to that.

Darian approached from behind her.

"She should not be standing here."

Selisse did not look back. "Then stop telling me where I should stand."

Caelan's expression remained controlled, but his eyes stayed on Aric.

"There are people asking about you," he said.

"Who?"

"Nobles."

Darian answered before Caelan could continue. "People who notice when an engagement becomes politically inconvenient."

Selisse turned sharply.

"Darian."

"What? It is true."

Aric's attention moved between them.

The pressure beneath the square pulsed again.

The academy stones shuddered.

Selisse's face tightened.

"You chose an excellent time to return," she said.

"I wasn't planning to return tonight."

"No," she replied. "You usually prefer to arrive after the disaster."

Aric almost smiled.

Almost.

Then he saw the fear beneath her composure.

Not fear for herself.

Fear that the thing below had recognized their connection and would use it again.

He lowered his voice.

"Did you know about the fountain?"

"No."

"Have you been hearing anything?"

Selisse hesitated.

That was enough.

"What?" Aric asked.

"Sometimes," she said quietly, "when I leave the academy late, I hear footsteps under the east corridor."

Caelan's head turned toward her.

Darian looked suddenly less amused.

"How long?" Aric asked.

"Three weeks."

The System opened.

[Historical activity pattern detected.]

[Possible prior resonance exposure.]

[Identity-anchor formation may predate current breach.]

Aric looked toward the academy buildings.

Three weeks.

The network had been active before the western waystation collapse.

Before the birds.

Before he returned to Highglade.

Selisse had been standing near it without knowing.

Or perhaps she had known enough to be afraid.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?" Aric asked.

Her eyes hardened.

"I did."

"Who?"

"The academy wardens."

"And?"

"They told me it was old plumbing."

Darian muttered something under his breath.

Caelan looked toward the inner halls. "We need to move her."

Selisse faced him. "I'm not leaving because a monster said my name."

"It did more than say your name."

"It attacked the square."

"Because it was drawn to you."

Aric interrupted. "No. It was drawn to the network. Selisse is an anchor, not necessarily the cause."

Selisse looked at him.

"Anchor?"

"A point the system recognizes."

"What system?"

Aric hesitated.

The question was too large for the square.

The ground beneath them split again.

This time, the crack ran toward the academy's eastern corridor.

A bell rang beneath the stones.

One.

Two.

Three times.

The patrol captain's expression changed.

"Inside," she ordered.

The academy guards began moving students through the nearest doors.

Selisse did not move.

Aric stood beside her.

Darian watched them both.

The pressure beneath the square gathered.

Not at the fountain.

At the academy.

The System opened.

[Major resonance concentration shifting.]

[New source: East academy corridor.]

[Identity-anchor response: Strong.]

A voice rose from beneath the paving stones.

Not the Flood Maw.

Not the Hollow Stalker.

Not a mimic.

A clear human voice.

"Selisse Veylin."

Selisse went pale.

Aric turned toward the academy.

The voice continued.

"Return below."

No one in the square spoke.

Caelan stepped in front of Selisse.

Darian's hand went to his sword.

Aric raised the spearhead.

The academy doors began to close.

Beyond them, in the dark corridor, something moved.

And this time, the sound of footsteps came from above.

Not below.
