Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12

The jumbo jet cut through the clouds like a silent predator, its interior a tomb of quiet luxury. Reina shifted in the plush leather seat, her new body humming with a restless energy that the confined space could barely contain. She had been staring out the window at the endless expanse of grey, watching the world blur beneath them, when the sensation hit.

It was a subtle pressure, a faint, almost imperceptible crawling across her skin, like the ghost of a spider's legs. It wasn't painful. It wasn't threatening. It was just… there. A presence. A focused attention that seemed to originate from somewhere far below them, piercing the altitude and steel to settle directly upon her.

She sat perfectly still, her heightened senses straining to identify the source. It felt… curious. Probing. Other.

And then, as suddenly as it had arrived, it vanished.

Reina's head snapped toward Jane, who was watching her with a placid, almost bored expression. "Did you feel that?" Reina asked, her voice low.

Jane's crimson eyes narrowed slightly. "Feel what, my dear?"

"That… sensation. Just now. It was like… like being watched. But not with eyes. With… mind." The words felt clumsy and inadequate.

Jane leaned forward, the faint hint of boredom evaporating, replaced by a sharp, predatory interest. "Describe it. Exactly."

"It was a pressure. A light touch, here," Reina said, gesturing to her temple. "It was searching for something. And then it was just… gone."

A slow, terrifyingly beautiful smile spread across Jane's lips. It was the smile of a collector who had just been handed a priceless, unexpected treasure. "Interesting," she purred. "Most interesting."

"What is it?" Reina asked, a thread of anxiety weaving through her curiosity.

"I felt nothing," Jane stated, her gaze intense, locking onto Reina's. "And if I felt nothing, it means the intrusion was not aimed at me. It was meant for you alone. And you not only felt it… you recognized its nature." She reached out, her cold, marble fingers brushing a strand of hair from Reina's face. The touch sent a familiar, thrilling shiver down Reina's spine. "There are those among our kind with gifts, Reina. Abilities that go beyond mere strength and speed. Some can see the future. Some can hear thoughts. Some, like my brother, can cloak the world in darkness, robbing others of their senses."

Reina listened, captivated, her world expanding yet again.

"What you felt," Jane continued, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "was likely one such gift. A mental probe. Someone was attempting to look at you, to see you, from a great distance. And you felt them do it." Her smile widened. "Do you know what that suggests?"

Reina could only shake her head, her green eyes wide.

"It suggests that you may not only be sensitive to such intrusions… but that you might possess the capacity to jam them. To build a wall they cannot cross. It is a rare and powerful defensive gift." Jane's thumb traced the line of Reina's jaw. "With practice, you could learn to shield yourself. To shield us. No one would be able to get inside your head without your permission. No one."

The implication was staggering. Power. Not the raw, physical power that coursed through her new veins, but a subtler, more profound form of control. The emptiness inside her, the void where her memories should have been, seemed to pulse with a new possibility. She could build a fortress there. She could belong to Jane so completely that not even a thought could separate them.

"I want to learn," Reina breathed, the desire sharp and immediate.

Jane's expression was one of pure, unadulterated triumph. "And I will teach you."

Rain sheeted against the wide glass windows of the Cullen home, each drop a tiny explosion against the pane. The interior, usually a haven of calm and modern beauty, was now charged with a brittle, electric tension.

Alice stood in the center of the living room, her small form rigid. "It's no use," she said, her musical voice strained. "The moment I try to look at them, specifically at the new one, everything goes… fuzzy. Like static. It's not like Alec's darkness. This is different. It's like she's a blur, a smudge on the future."

Carlisle's brow was furrowed in deep thought. "A natural shield? And one powerful enough to block you? That is… concerning."

"It's more than concerning," Rosalie muttered from the staircase, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. "It means we're going in blind. We don't know what she is, what she can do, or what Jane plans to do with her."

Emmett cracked his knuckles, the sound like rocks grinding together. "Let them come. We've faced worse."

"Have we?" Esme's gentle voice was laced with a fear she rarely showed. "This is the Volturi. And Jane does not make mistakes. If she has created a new vampire and is bringing her here personally, this is no routine investigation."

Bella moved to stand beside Edward, her hand finding his. "Renesmee is safe," she stated, though the words were a question.

"For now," Edward replied, his voice tight. "Alice's vision showed a confrontation. It showed many paths, but all of them lead to this house. To us."

The room fell silent, the only sound the relentless drumming of the rain. They were a family of powerful, ancient beings, yet they felt the walls closing in. The unknown variable, the beautiful blank slate named Reina, was hurtling toward them, a weapon forged by the most sadistic of their kind.

Carlisle finally broke the silence, his voice the calm at the center of the gathering storm. "Then we prepare for the worst. We stand together. We show them our truth. And we protect our family."

Alice closed her eyes, her face a mask of concentration as she sought once more through the fog-shrouded future. "They'll be here by nightfall," she whispered.

Edward's arm slid around Bella's waist, pulling her close. His dark eyes met Carlisle's.

"Then we wait."
