Chapter 149: The Fall of a Village
Ren ignored the swarm of Cloud shinobi, his focus absolute. He moved in a blur, snatching up Suigetsu's discarded Kubikiribōchō from the ground as he passed, before leaping effortlessly back onto the head of the restless Kyuubi.
"Boss!" Suigetsu called out as Ren landed. "You're back!"
"Suigetsu. Your sword." Ren tossed the massive blade to him.
Suigetsu caught it, but his face fell as he examined it. "My sword...!" A deep notch, webbed with cracks, marred the legendary blade's edge. It was on the verge of shattering.
"My apologies," Ren said, his tone devoid of actual regret. "My Ryūkō Seiun must have struck it during the exchange with Darui. When this is over, I will have it examined by a master smith. It may be reparable."
"Tch. Don't worry about it," Suigetsu shrugged, though a flicker of disappointment crossed his face. He slung the damaged sword onto his back and hefted the large blade he'd taken from Darui. "I've got a new toy now, anyway. It'll do."
"Suit yourself." Ren's attention was already elsewhere, his gaze sweeping over the chaotic battlefield below.
"Hey, Boss," Suigetsu ventured, a bloodthirsty grin spreading on his face. "The Raikage's down. Should we press the advantage? Wipe these Cloud guys out?"
Ren didn't answer with words. A cold, predatory smile was his only reply.
Below, the Kyuubi, enraged by the blow that had driven it to the ground, let out a roar that shook the very mountains. It was a mindless copy, but the instinct for vengeance burned within it. The strongest of the Tailed Beasts had been humiliated.
"Heh. You're angry, aren't you?" Ren mused, sensing the beast's fury through their connection. "Very well. Unleash your wrath. Do as you please."
As if receiving a direct command, the Kyuubi raised a colossal paw and brought it down in a cataclysmic swipe, crushing a squad of Cloud shinobi who had been foolish enough to get too close.
The beast was tired of playing with its food. It threw its head back, a deep rumbling building in its chest. In its maw, dark purple and black chakra swirled, compressing into a sphere of pure annihilation—a Tailed Beast Bomb.
"NO! Stop it!" a Cloud jonin screamed, but his voice was lost in the gathering storm of energy.
The sphere shot forth, not at the shinobi, but on a trajectory that sent a wave of pure horror through every defender. It was headed directly for the heart of Kumogakure—the towering Raikage Headquarters.
A desperate barrage of ninjutsu soared from the ground, a pathetic attempt to intercept the doom hurtling toward their village. The attacks were like pebbles thrown at a tidal wave, vanishing without effect against the concentrated power of the bomb.
The world seemed to hold its breath.
Then, impact.
A light—brighter than the sun—bloomed from the center of the village. It was followed by a sound so profound it was less a noise and more a physical force that slammed into everyone present. A colossal mushroom cloud of dust, fire, and debris erupted into the sky, consuming the Raikage tower and everything around it. The shockwave that followed scoured the village center clean, vaporizing stone, metal, and flesh alike.
When the light faded and the dust began to settle, a silence more terrible than any roar fell over the battlefield. Where the proud center of Kumogakure had stood, there was now only a vast, smoldering crater. The iconic headquarters of the Raikage was gone. Entire city blocks had been erased.
"The... the village..." a Cloud shinobi whispered, his weapon falling from numb fingers. "It's... gone..."
That broken whisper was the spark that ignited an inferno of rage. The shock turned into a berserker fury. The Cloud shinobi, from the lowest genin to the most seasoned jonin, abandoned all tactics, all sense of self-preservation. With cries of pure hatred, they launched themselves at the Kyuubi, a tide of desperate humanity against a mountain of chakra.
Kunai, shuriken, and every manner of ninjutsu slammed into the beast's body. They were insignificant individually, but the sheer volume of attacks was staggering. The Kyuubi roared in pain and irritation as its form was pockmarked by countless small explosions.
"Boss!" Suigetsu yelled, struggling to keep his footing as the fox bucked and thrashed. "They're like ants! If this keeps up, even the Nine-Tails might be worn down! What's the plan?!"
Ren watched the scene below, his expression unreadable. Then, with a final, dismissive snort, he closed his eyes. When they opened again, the Mangekyō pattern was spinning violently.
Without a word, he leaped from the Kyuubi's head, landing on the ravaged ground below. He was immediately spotted.
"It's him! Uchiha Ren!"
"Kill him! Avenge our village!"
A horde of enraged Cloud shinobi turned from the beast and charged directly at him, their eyes burning with the need for vengeance.
"You bring this upon yourselves," Ren said, his voice a low whisper that carried unnatural weight.
A sinister, grey-white chakra erupted from his body, so potent it felt like a physical weight pressing down on the attackers. It swirled and coalesced, rising into the air, forming a massive skeleton that dwarfed the surrounding shinobi. But it didn't stop there. Muscles of chakra woven over the bones, then skin of blazing energy, until a gigantic, humanoid warrior, clad in ancient armor and holding a shield of light, stood towering over the ruins of Kumogakure.
The Complete Body — Susanoo.
The charge of the Cloud shinobi faltered, their rage freezing into sheer, primal terror as they stared up at the divine warrior born from Uchiha Ren's eyes. The battle had transcended shinobi combat. It had become a clash of myths.
