Chapter 8 - Strength in Shadows

The harbor was quiet again, but a tension hung in the air. Kael and Arin moved quickly through the narrow streets, returning to the group. Arin's heart still raced from the encounter with the girl. His mind was full of confusion, fear, and questions he could not yet answer. Every shadow seemed alive, every whisper a warning.

As they approached the familiar dock, Arin saw a figure he thought he had lost. Dev stood there, leaning against a post, calm but alert. Relief washed over Arin in an instant.

"You are alive!" Arin exclaimed, running forward.

Dev's face broke into a small smile. "Of course. You think I would stay down for long?"

Arin's chest heaved as he stopped in front of him. "I was scared… I did not know if I would see you again."

Kael stepped forward, his tall figure casting a shadow over the dock. Elias noticed them and asked, "All okay, Kael?"

Kael shook his head slightly, the tension in his shoulders visible. "Demora almost got him. She was fast than I expected. But Rewinder was there. She saved me at the last second."

Mira raised her brows. "She ran away again?"

Kael nodded. "Yes. We will deal with her later. Rewinder will rejoin us when her task is finished. Right now, she is helping me wander through the cities, finding others who can join our team. It is slow, but necessary."

Elias's eyes softened as he looked at Kael. "And you?" he asked. "Are you unharmed?"

Kael smiled faintly. "I am fine. But this proves one thing. The world is watching more than ever. Arin's powers are out, and those who wish to use them will try. We cannot wait."

He turned to the group and continued, "Right now, you need to help Arin control his powers. He is scared, but he is also stronger than he knows. He saw what Rewinder did, how she rewound time. He must learn to understand his abilities, or he will be vulnerable when they come for him."

Arin glanced at Kael, still trembling slightly. "I… I do not know if I can. I do not even understand what I am capable of. Everything happened so fast."

Dev placed a hand on his shoulder. "You can. You will. But first, calm yourself. Fear will only make it harder. Remember the moments before. Breathe, focus, and feel your power, not fight against it."

Kael stepped closer. "You are not alone, Arin. Look around you. Every one of us has struggled with power, with fear. You have guidance now. You will learn to be strong."

Elias nodded. "We all know the stakes. The Three Hooded Figures are still out there, and the girl you encountered is only part of their force. They are patient. They wait for the right moment to strike. We cannot give them any advantage."

Riven, standing slightly to the side, tilted his head. "So… training him now means he can survive next time?"

Kael's eyes were firm. "Yes. He is powerful, yes, but untrained. That makes him vulnerable. If he learns to focus, to control his abilities, he will become one of our strongest allies. That is why every moment counts. Every lesson matters."

Mira stepped forward, worry in her eyes. "And if he makes a mistake? If he uses his power and someone sees?"

Dev shook his head. "That is why we are here. We guide him. Teach him. Keep him safe. He will learn, Mira. Trust him. Trust us."

Arin took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. He remembered the moment with the girl and how the world seemed to bend around her. The fear he had felt, the helplessness, it all returned, but he also felt a spark , a determination to master what he had been given.

Kael noticed the change in him. "Good. That spark is important. That is the start. Now, we begin slowly. First, understand your connection to the power. Feel it, do not fight it. Let it flow through you."

Arin nodded, eyes narrowing with concentration. The air around him seemed to shift slightly as he tried to sense the energy inside him. The dock felt alive, the waves brushing against the wood like whispers of guidance.

Elias stepped closer. "Remember, Arin. This is not just about strength. It is about control. You must learn to use your power without drawing attention. Every action, every move must remain unseen. You are a soldier hidden in plain sight."

Riven stepped forward, a small grin forming. "Then I guess I will train with you too. I have control, but not patience. Maybe I can help you focus."

Mira nodded. "I will help too. You are not alone, Arin. We all have struggled with powers we could not fully understand. Together, we are stronger."

Arin looked at each of them, their faces serious but encouraging. Slowly, his fear began to fade, replaced by determination. He could feel the power inside him, and though it was wild and unpredictable, it was also his.

Kael watched quietly. "We do not know when they will strike again. The Three Hooded Figures, Demora, and the others, they are waiting. But so are we. When the time comes, you will be ready. That is why we train, that is why we hide, and that is why we prepare. Shadows protect us, but skill and focus keep us alive."

Arin took a step forward, lifting his hands instinctively. The energy inside him pulsed like a heartbeat. Slowly, he began to control it, shaping it in small bursts. Sparks of light danced along his fingertips, and the team watched closely, ready to guide him if he lost focus.

Dev nodded approvingly. "Good. That is progress. Remember, fear weakens the power. Confidence strengthens it. You can do this, Arin. You are stronger than you think."

Kael placed a hand on Arin's shoulder. "And always remember, the moment you let fear control you, the world outside will take advantage. Every second matters. Train hard. Learn fast. And trust those who stand beside you."

The dock was silent except for the soft lapping of water and the distant cries of gulls. Arin's pulse slowed, and he began to feel the rhythm of his own power. The fear was still there, but now it was tempered by control. He had survived the first challenge.

Kael stepped back, eyes scanning the horizon. "We have more to do, but this is the start. Shadows will protect us, but soon the real fight begins. Until then, we grow stronger, together."

Arin looked at each member of the team. For the first time since the girl had attacked, he felt a sense of hope. He was not alone. He had allies, guidance, and the power within him. He would learn. He would survive. And when the time came, he would fight.

The night deepened around them, the harbor quiet but filled with unseen threats. The group stood together, ready to teach, protect, and prepare. And somewhere in the shadows, those who waited would soon realize that the hidden soldiers were growing stronger, ready to challenge whatever came next.
