Agnus was scrambling, dodging the storm of slashing blades with no way to stop the demons dropping like flies around him. The light-blades weren't just cutting—they tore through space itself, ricocheting off walls and slicing through the hall again. Then they converged, transforming into a swarm of magical flying swords that blanketed the entire room, forcing Agnus to keep scurrying like a rat.
When he finally dared to peek up and survey the hall, his sword-wing minions were wiped out. Only two Silver Knights remained, and the two Golden Knights, thanks to Nero's special attention, were already toast.
"Lunatic! Freaking lunatic!"
Staring at Nero, who'd dropped her Devil Trigger and stood empty-handed in the center of the hall, Agnus roared with a voice trembling from raw panic. "Y-Y-You're not scared your s-s-sister might die too?!"
Agnus's frantic stuttering was as entertaining as ever. Nero pulled out her whip-sword, flashing a cool smirk. "The only ones getting hurt by me are demons."
That was a bluff, though. Nero's control wasn't that precise. While her phantom blades were tearing through the room, she'd actually been sneaking around in Agnus's blind spot, making sure Kyrie stayed safe.
But her bravado worked. Agnus was clearly itching to bolt, edging a few steps toward the hall's exit.
He couldn't leave, though. If he bailed now, Nero could easily grab Kyrie and slip out of the Order's headquarters, hiding her somewhere safe. The Pope's orders would be a total bust.
In that split-second of hesitation, Nero lunged at him. Her emerald snake-sword, Echidna, stretched through the air like a gust through a forest, whipping in an arc toward Agnus.
The two Silver Knights jetted forward, spraying gas as they raised their shields to block Echidna. Nero landed, launching a side kick with her Gilgamesh-equipped right leg. The brief clash flipped one knight's shield aside, but the force threw Nero off-balance, tilting her backward.
Seizing the moment, both Silver Knights thrust their lances. Nero twisted into a mid-air flip, pulling back just enough to lash out with Echidna. The whip's tip slithered like a viper between the knights, snapping toward Agnus.
Agnus flapped his translucent wings, darting into the air and hurling his nearly shattered sword-wing at her. Nero instantly retracted Echidna, shifting it into a straight sword and slicing the projectile apart.
This was getting tricky. That last room-clearing stunt had burned through a chunk of Nero's magic. She needed a breather before she could trigger her Devil form again, but Agnus wasn't the kind of opponent you could just slap around in human mode.
He was a high-ranking Order demon, after all—not some chump who'd crumble without his goons. With the Silver Knights holding her up, if Agnus called in more demons, things could get messy.
After a few fights, Nero had started to suspect her Devil Trigger was way stronger than the game version of herself. But in her normal state? She was noticeably weaker.
Gotta take out the Silver Knights fast. Nero darted forward, flinging Echidna to wrap around one knight's leg. She yanked hard, toppling it and dragging it in a circle before smashing it into its buddy.
The entangled knight's leg snapped clean off, and the two demons tumbled into a heap. Nero leaped high, slamming down with a leg drop that fused them into the floor.
Not dead yet—the knights were still twitching. Nero shifted Echidna back to sword form, lopping off their heads with one swing and pinning their chests to the ground with a single thrust.
Done. Now the only demon left in the hall was Agnus.
Nero spun toward the air, and sure enough, the creep was up to something sneaky. He was hovering near the cage holding Kyrie, clearly planning to snatch it.
Good thing Nero hadn't rushed to free Kyrie earlier. The massive cage wasn't just a prison—it was protection. Hauling a giant cage was way harder than grabbing a person.
Nero drew her sword and charged after Agnus. He was already fiddling with the cage, trying to pry Kyrie out.
That's the thing with traps like this—the one trying to open it is the one who's screwed.
Echidna lashed out from behind, but Agnus dodged with surprising agility. Nero didn't yank the whip to deal more damage; the scales just clinked with a crisp, metallic ring.
Kyrie didn't stir. That girl's sleep game was something else.
"D-Don't think I'm s-scared of you!" Agnus stammered, his shaky voice betraying his bravado. He conjured a black-and-gold magic circle behind him, but the guy clearly wasn't feeling confident.
A barrage of black-gold missiles shot from the circle. Despite the golden halo above his head, Agnus's look and power screamed demon more than angel. Compared to Credo, the guy was living proof of "your face reflects your heart."
Nero vaulted into the air, slashing the incoming missiles apart one by one, closing in on Agnus. But he quickly dispelled the magic circle and zipped behind Kyrie's cage like a coward.
His spineless fighting style got a dry chuckle out of Nero. But with Kyrie in the mix, she couldn't go all-out. She landed on the cage, slicing through the chains suspending it and dropping to the ground with Kyrie in tow.
No more hiding for Agnus. Nero swung Echidna and pounced.
Agnus grabbed the snake-sword with his three-fingered demonic claw. Nero tugged, throwing him off-balance and nearly slicing his fingers off, black mist oozing from the cuts.
But instead of letting go, Agnus yanked back, pulling Nero toward him.
The move was so out of character it set off alarm bells in Nero's head—but it was too late.
With her weapon caught, mid-air and off-balance, a figure appeared behind her.
Searing pain shot through her shoulders. Nero twisted her head to see a white-haired, dark-skinned woman in revealing clothes clinging to her. Two daggers were plunged into Nero's shoulders, one on each side.
It was Gloria—or rather, Trish. The one who'd given Nero her clothes and guns, supposedly an undercover agent in the Order… or so it seemed.
"Nicely done," Agnus said, finally releasing Echidna and dropping to the ground.
Gloria pinned Nero to the floor, looking up with a smug grin. "Pleasure working with you."
"Why—"
Nero's question was cut off as a blunt strike slammed into her gut, forcing her to swallow her words in agony.
Then, Gloria's hand came down in a brutal chop to the back of Nero's neck. Her vision went black, and she was out cold.
