Chapter 22 - A human fragility.

As I kept walking deeper inside the mall, I noticed the gas growing thicker, to the point that the sound of laughter from those on the ground was silent.

'All dead.'

Anyone who was in this area was dead already by the time I arrived.

Maybe they survived a few minutes, but considering that I, an alien who walked directly inside the moment the incident took place, and yet I arrived too late for any of them to still be alive, proved that they were hopeless.

They were simply doomed, unless Flash wore a gas mask and rushed to their help.

Pink glanced at Lion with a small, worried look, but seeing that he seemed unaffected at all brought a sigh of relief from her.

'That's one worry off my mind.'

Pink then placed her hand on Lion's mane as it sunk inside it, and her look changed to a very determined one as her hand closed around the handle of her sword.

Her other hand moved near her diamond, and the next second, a shield materialised strapped to her arm.

While she pulled the sword out and gave it a few casual swings, as she looked at it with a satisfied smile.

'Finally, I have the chance to use it.'

With a small pat to Lion's head, she continued forward.

'I am not sure where the clown is, but following the directions with the thicker amount of gas is my best idea at the moment.'

'And besides, I don't think the Joker plans to be subtle; after all, he loves nothing if not attention, especially from Batman…. After all, if he is anything close to what I know, then this is a game.. and what fun is there if the players don't arrive or notice your show?'

Thankfully, the dead bodies were becoming less and less frequent; the only bodies I found were of those that tried to hide instead of running away.

Sure, the Joker didn't find them, but he didn't need to; after all, the gas did the job quite well.

Pink's face grew colder the more bodies she saw; every corpse, every dead grin reminded her that no matter how much she believed she knew about the Joker, but seeing it first hand was different.. very different.

"Sigh… Do I really have a moral high ground here?… I did kill thousands just because I wasn't thinking straight."

Pink stopped as Lion stopped and turned to her as well.

'The problem is…. I am not even sure if I truly regret it… I could have done things differently, yes, but…. Why should I suffer or endure just for other people?'

'I was never a kind person… I didn't steal or kill in my human life, sure…. but I wasn't a hero…'

'I may have hidden it from my family before, but I remember…. the first few years after dad passed were tough….. I remember every time I would stare at another pill paper that I had no idea how to pay… I remember when I went to a pharmacy and didn't even have the cash to buy my mother's medication, so I had to sell my phone.'

'Except those that knew me personally or had debts to my father… No one cared about my suffering… No one cared about a boy leaving college because he couldn't afford it, no one cared about me sleeping on a bench because I worked extra hours while lying to my mother about renting a hotel room... no one cared about my family…. So why should I care?.'

'I lived and I saw many people who, with a word, would have solved everything for me… yet they only gave me a pat on the back and said some nonsense about how they too had to work hard back in the day.'

Thousands starve every year, yet no one cares…. suddenly because I have powers, I should start playing babysitter?

With great powers comes great responsibility... Live by this sentence and you end up living for others, and by the time you realise it? You would be nothing beneath the hero mask.

'So …. Yes, I don't care about strangers. I feel sorry for them? Sure, but care? No… If someone gave me a button that would kill hundreds to save someone close to me?'

'I would press that button with no hesitation.'

'Humans aren't that great… I don't mind helping people if I don't suffer because of it… but that's about it.'

Pink's somber face finally snapped back to see Lion sitting beside her, looking up at her with a worried expression.

She patted his head while looking around.

'But the clown is different… If he did all of this for a purpose, or to save someone close to him?… I wouldn't have even stopped him unless our interests clashed… or maybe if he came hunting me… no, for the Joker, all of this is a glorified game.'

Pink's somber expression disappeared as she started walking again with heavy steps.

'And in a way, I am doing this for me… I would not let him ruin Superman of this earth… Otherwise, things will get messy….'

'And since I am doing it…. I will make it painful…. not only to that freak of a clown, but to everyone that helped, from his crazy minions to the man himself, and as long as I don't kill them, I can break as much as I want before fixing them up.'

Pink's thoughts kept going more and more to how much painful she would make it once she got their hands on them.

To the point that she didn't notice her own diamond flashing pink lights with her emotions, nor Lion, who started to get scared beside her.

'Hope you're ready clown… Because today you will be the punch line in my joke.'

[Evander Julian (A random Joker minion) POV.]

'What was the point of this mission? Raiding a mall just because Harley Quinn wanted some jewellery?'

Wasn't raiding a bank more profitable?

Of course not that he, or anyone, would tell it to the Joker in the face.

Evander cursed under his breath as he tripped on a random corpse.

In his annoyance, he kicked it more than once.

'Dumb people, can they not run away when they see a gas? And even then, they should have already known and memorised the boss' trick; if I were them, I would have already bought a gas mask that I carry with me every day.'

'That's the natural selection on its purest form.'

Before Evander could continue his patrol, he saw something that made him pause.

'A pink Lion? What sort of drug did I take this morning?'

The Lion did nothing; he simply stared at him in silence.

Due to Evander's shock and confusion, he didn't notice a flashing pink light beside him until it was too late.

A sword tore through the gas, and the weapon in Evander's hand fell to the floor while the ground cracked when a bloodied sword came in contact with it.

Evander felt nothing; his heart was frozen, his mind couldn't comprehend what he looked at.

He lifted his two arms, which were decapitated from the elbow with blood running down them like a fountain. Staining the ground beneath him.

When Evander's mind finally caught up to the pain, he fell to the ground with a scream of pure pain.

"AAAHHH!"

But it was cut off as he felt a hand on his throat as it lifted him off the ground with his legs dangling.

His eyes locked with two diamond-like irises before looking down at the diamond in the monster's chest.

'Pink Diamond! What is she doing here?'

Evander, like many humans, were not clueless about the news, especially when it's about a confirmed miracle cure.

Evander even joked around with his friends that if he saw that Pink princess, he would take her eyeballs to sell.

But his mind finally came to understand something very important… This Pink lady could make such tears because she was a monster freak as well.

His thoughts were cut off as she threw him against a wall; he felt a few cracks from his back as he fell to the ground, his lungs heaving for air.

He heard slow thuds of heavy steps, and when he finally lifted his head to look up, he felt a small drop of something hit his face.

The next second, all the pain disappeared and he stared at his arm in shock and horror as it literally grew back.

Before the process ended, pain exploded in his leg as a huge sword pierced his left leg.

Evander wanted to scream, to beg for help, to scream that heroes don't do this, but a huge hand held his mouth as diamond irises came into view again.

"You will take me to the Joker … or I will keep breaking and fixing your pathetic organic form until death seems like a gift."

Evander didn't consider himself a coward, but as he looked at those eyes, something told him that she wasn't joking.

If someone has to deal with this Pink monster, then let that crazy boss be the one.

He didn't feel like risking a torture session.

[Pink Diamond (MC) POV.]

'Humans are really fragile…. I didn't even try that hard and he is breaking so easily, like cardboard.'

'Was I being too cruel?' Pink winced internally a little, but her regret was short-lived; after all, this man didn't mind helping the Joker slaughter innocents.

'If you are willing to kill others, then you should be prepared to be killed as well; after all, it's only fair.'

'So maybe I was crueler than I should … But I didn't care, not even a little.'

I held that waste of organic material as I told him to lead the way.

If he tries anything, then I will cut his legs and make him point the way for me, and I can fix him up each time before he bleeds out.

Thankfully, it seemed he knew what was better for himself.

(A few minutes later)

Once another silhouette came into view, my hand pushed through the gas and held whoever that person was.

And with a pull, the man came fully into view; once I saw the gas mask and his clothes that seemed similar to my road guide, I lifted my hand holding him in the air before bringing it down and smashing him into the ground.

Pink didn't notice Evander or Lion flinch at that, while both the man and the Lion started sweating profusely.

Thankfully, Pink Diamond used to have an intense interest in organics, so I knew exactly what was lethal and what was enough to send them to the dreamland.

Pink stared at the man laying on the ground; once she saw his chest still moving, she looked sharply at her road guide and gestured for him to continue.

A few seconds later, a few more figures came to view; this time they didn't carry weapons, each of them carried bags of jewellery which they dropped, switching to their weapons.

Pink moved in front of Lion and her road guide as her shield expanded, covering her front side completely.

As bullets rained on her shield, Pink simply opened her other hand as a pink bubble expanded, covering Lion and her road guide inside.

Seeing them protected, Pink pushed her shield as she rushed forward. She threw her sword at one of them, making him lose focus, while cancelling her shield, taking a few bullets that didn't do much, if anything at all; once she reached them, she grabbed the two by the head and imprisoned them in Pink bubbles.

The third person tried to escape upon seeing his friends, but a crushing force held the back of his head.

The last thing he saw was the earth coming to his face as he was smashed on the ground, losing consciousness and then being bubbled like the rest.

'That's five.'

Pink held her sword that broke through a pillar and pulled it out from the stone, making it collapse. Pink could have sworn she saw something glow red in the pillar rubble, but after looking at the collapsed rubble, she saw nothing.

Although she moved, it a small sense of unease lingered, but she ignored it.

Pink moved as she touched each bubble with her palm, making them float and follow her, carrying the prisoners with them.

As Pink was about to continue, she heard a very terrifying, yet disturbing laughter coming from a certain direction.

Although she knew exactly what she was here for, the laughter made her human side have second thoughts.

While Pink's face unconsciously then bloomed in a sweet smile as her diamond eyes glowed slightly brighter, not that she noticed any of it as she muttered,

"Found you."
