Chapter 40 - Attack

Everything was over. The dark clouds in the sky began to dissipate after Imoji flew into the sky and disappeared, and sunlight once again shone upon the earth.

The entire battlefield was in ruins as far as the eye could see, with monster bones scattered everywhere, some still bearing traces of flesh that hadn't been completely destroyed.

Many areas were pockmarked with craters left by missile explosions, and some withered yellow grass was burning, emitting thick smoke.

The surviving soldiers were cleaning up the battlefield.

At Bragi's remains,

Coulson was leading a patrol, guarding the massive, jade-like skeleton.

As he turned a corner, Coulson noticed that the soldiers there were gone. At first, he didn't pay it much mind, thinking they had just been called away by others.

But as he continued further inside, he found more and more guards missing. He sensed something was wrong and a feeling of vigilance rose within him.

Suddenly, a figure entirely in red emerged from the wall behind him, a dagger in his Hand lunging towards Coulson's throat.

Coulson's hair stood on end, and he rolled to the ground.

The dagger in the figure's Hand whistled as it cut through the air. Seeing his attack miss, he pulled a dart from his waist and threw it at Coulson.

Coulson rolled to dodge the dart, then turned and fired a shot.

Bang!

The gunshot rang out, and the red figure, struck by the bullet, turned to ash on the ground.

What's going on? How could someone be shooting?

Everyone was startled by the gunshot, their nerves tightening again, and they all became alert.

"Officer, reporting: Enemies have infiltrated the area around Bragi's remains. They seem to have cloaking technology. I killed one enemy who ambushed me, but his body turned to ash after he died."

Coulson reported into his communicator, then turned and pushed open the door to a storage room, intending to take cover from the danger.

But he was stunned by the sight before him. He might have known where the missing soldiers had gone.

Soldiers lay haphazardly in the storage room, their throats slit by a sharp weapon, blood continuously gushing from their wounds.

These soldiers hadn't died on the battlefield, nor had they died in combat with the monsters, yet they were assassinated by an unknown group of enemies.

As he stood frozen at the storage room door, a red figure appeared behind him, raising a dagger to kill him.

Just as it was about to touch Coulson, a fiery red bullet struck the Hand holding the dagger. The bullet pierced his arm, and flames spread from the wound, incinerating him entirely into ash.

The stunned Coulson was also brought back to his senses by the gunshot. In the distance, Hawkeye's Lato was smoking; that shot was his.

Thanking Hawkeye, Coulson silently mourned the assassinated soldiers. Now, he needed to know the purpose of these Red Dress Killers.

It seemed that because of these two gunshots, the entire military Base became eerily silent.

Suddenly, intense gunfire erupted from a corner of Bragi's remains. Coulson and Hawkeye rushed over.

By the time they arrived, only one soldier was left, frantically firing at an empty space. The other soldiers were already lying on the ground, lifeless.

That empty space looked normal; no one saw anything different.

Unlike the others, he vaguely saw a human figure, crouching behind a box, in the direction the soldier was shooting.

That person only had a slight difference in outline from the surroundings; other parts seemed to blend seamlessly with the environment.

He raised his Hand, aimed his Lato, and fired a shot.

The bullet spun, piercing the person's chest. Flames revealed the person's form, and he turned to ash in the fire.

Now everyone saw the Red Dress Killer, and those killers no longer remained cloaked. They lunged at Bragi's remains, attempting to snatch them.

Immediately, gunfire erupted, and a hail of bullets covered them all.

Each of these killers was agile, dodging bullets with several rolls and taking cover behind the remains.

Andy, who arrived upon hearing the gunfire, raised an eyebrow at the scene before him. He hadn't expected these killers to possess cloaking fabric—that was a good thing.

Activating his own cloaking device, he quietly approached where one of the killers was hiding. There was nothing to be seen here except Bragi's bones; these killers were indeed very cautious.

However, this couldn't stump Andy; he still had a Kinetic Absorption Trap he hadn't used yet!

He took out the Kinetic Absorption Trap from his waist, activated it, and threw it on the ground.

A wave of energy emanated from the center of the trap, spreading outwards. Immediately after, the trap seemed to detect something and shot out a beam of light, enveloping and pulling an empty space.

During the pull, a red figure emerged, struggling fiercely. Upon closer inspection, it looked like a ninja from Dongying.

Andy deactivated his cloaking device. The person was startled to see him; he hadn't expected someone else to possess cloaking technology, and seemingly more advanced than his own.

"Who are you? Why did you assassinate those soldiers?"

Andy tried to question the captive. The captive didn't answer, but his eyes were eerily calm.

Even when he saw his companions shot multiple times, there wasn't a ripple of emotion, as if it wasn't his companions who had died.

The gunfire here grew denser, and more people gathered. Gradually, some felt something was wrong but couldn't pinpoint what it was.

Suddenly, gunfire also erupted from another part of Bragi's remains. At this, they realized, finally understanding that this was a diversion. But what could be so valuable that they would pay such a high price to obtain it?

A portion of the people went to assist, but upon arriving, they found the battle already over. Black Widow, guarding the area, had killed many Red Dress Killers with brighton, but they all turned to ash in the same way, leaving no useful clues.

"It's very strange; they were only trying to steal some of Bragi's bones."

Seeing Nick Fury rushing over, Black Widow pointed to a puddle of ash on the ground and said.

It was indeed strange. Just some of Bragi's bones shouldn't warrant such a large-scale operation, using a large number of killers as a suicide squad, unless there was a secret they didn't know about.

Just then, Andy appeared, carrying a living Red Dress Killer, who was restrained by something in Andy's Hand.

Looking at the killer's full red uniform, Nick Fury immediately thought of a notorious underground black organization.

Hand.

This organizang as you could pay the price, they were willing to do anything for you, even if it cost them their lives.

However, the fact that Bragi could transform into a dragon should still be a secret. Most people's understanding of the giant python appearing in Los Angeles was still based on media reports from a few days ago. How could someone hire this group of killers to steal Bragi's skeleton?

And the timing of the theft was shortly after Bragi was killed. How did their employer know Bragi would die at this particular time?

Nick Fury furrowed his brow, deep in thought. There must be some reason he didn't know.

"Can you also turn to ash, like them?"

Andy asked, holding the Red Dress Killer in his Hand, somewhat curiously. The killer didn't answer; he was still struggling hard, trying to break free from the Kinetic Absorption Trap's restraint.

Watching the Red Dress Killer twisting his body, attempting to escape, Andy chuckled, "Save your breath; you can't break free. The first one who could break free was larger than a tank."

Seeing the Red Dress Killer ignore his advice and continue to struggle, Andy helplessly dropped him and the Kinetic Absorption Trap on the ground. It was tiring to keep holding a squirming person.
