Chapter 19 - No Free Healthcare

As I hobble down the hallway, Zero turns to me. "Professor Silho can be so laid back, yet cruel. This whole school is a little odd if you ask me. But then again, that is likely why it was the school that the biggest pro-luminary attended."

"What do you hope to attain?"

Zero is taken aback by my blunt question. "Um... what?"

"Why did you attend this school?"

He stands there for a moment, truly pondering the question.

His hair is a spiky ice blue as the hair intakes part his hair away from his head.

I can tell he's an honest person, similar to Fletcher. He begins scratching his head. "Wow, that's a big question to answer in the first week. I'm sure it sounds cheesy. But... I want to be a hero!"

"That doesn't sound cheesy at all."

"I just mean... I'm sure that's the answer anyone would give you. But I don't want to be a hero who works solely for money or fame. I want to be the kind of hero people look up to! Someone who truly believes in doing the right thing. My mom begged me not to go to this school. She said that it was too dangerous. But.. I want to be a hero more than anything! One that does not shake or stray from what is right! So I just hope I'm doing the right thing and not my right way." Zero must have realized he was monologuing. "Sorry about the rambling, I'm sure you think it's ridiculous, and I apologize if this sounds mean. But... I don't care what anyone thinks... Even you. I won't stray from my path."

Looks like Kunnia has competition for the most honest character. I give a great big smile. "I think that's amazing! This world is dark enough as is. It's fortunate to have a light such as yourself to shine as you do."

Zero stands there, blushing."You're making me feel cool. But... I'm not a hero yet. I still have a long way to go! Anyway, enough about me, from what I've seen, you're the real hero. So why are you here?"

I stare him in the eyes to an almost disturbing point. "I'm going to be a king."

Zero weakens his stance before tilting his head. "King? Uh... you do realize we live in a democracy with presidents, don't you?"

Realizing how serious I was, attempting to return to a happy smile. "Sorry... did I say king? I meant kind. I want to try and make people as happy as I can."

He seems to have believed every word, as he excitedly looks at me. "Really! It looks like our goals are similar! Then, here's to our friendly rivalry! Who can hold their ideals till the end!"

We manage to make it to the nurse's office, as he slides open the door. He assists me in getting to one of the hospital beds, where I lay back.

Our bodies were scanned when we entered the domain of the school. They called it a "checkpoint checkup". Supposedly, it serves as a baseline for our health. With that, the maroon-haired Milf- ... woman in the lab coat from the first day pulls aside the curtains as she pulls up an eye mask with a stretch. "Wow, already this hurt in the first week, an impressive feat. Now, how can I help you?" She yawns.

She gets out of the neighboring bed and sits down in her swivel chair. Now that I can see her, she is quite pretty. I may be biased due to my affection for turtle necks as she wears a red sweater with a cleavage cutout.

Her ripped jeans struggle to contain her large legs. She brushes her red glvoed hands against my arm.

Zero jumps in, saving me from the trouble. "You see, there was an accident during training, and he defended a girl in our class. But burned himself while doing so!"

"My, my. How heroic of you. Would you be willing to save an old bag of bones like me?"

I am about to tell her the truth, turning I remember Zero is in the room. "I don't really know you, but of course I would. You're a beautiful young woman, after all."

"Aren't you just a cutie, making an old lady like myself blush. Quite the gentleman, too." The nurse smiles.

Reaching into her back pocket she whips out a FN five-seven.

My eyes widen, attempting to reach for the scalpel. How the hell?! Shit! I don't have a weapon-

She shoots me three times in the head. My head slams against the wall as my brain paints the wall red.

Zero turns in a panic. I barely hear him as I fade out of consciousness. "Saint! Wha- what the fuck *oop* frick! just happened?!"

My world goes black; I'm pretty sure I was going to have one of those cinematic scenes where I fall into an endless pool of water and fail to swim to the surface, implying my consciousness fading. But I don't as I quickly regain my senses and my eyes re-adjust to the light.

The nurse tilts her head in confusion; her words are still muffled, as I can barely make them out as my head goes numb. "That was my power. I, the great Yaoki, can heal any wound with... anything." She hugs her gun as if it were a newborn. "And, of course, I would choose my baby! Anyway, the pain should subside within the next few hours."

Zero is standing there, shocked, sweating, and scared. He begins to slowly unsheathe his sword as icicles form around the blade.

In a sudden burst of survival instincts, I regain full consciousness; I'm not sure how I survived that assassination attempt.

Zero whips around to me, looking confused at my aliveness.

I quickly jump out of the bed grabbing a coin from my pocket, and transforming it into a Bayonet knife. I attempt to lunge at the woman.

My body feels lighter, but I chalk it up to adrenaline.

A good slice to the neck should be enough to kill her. I assume she can heal herself infinitely. I'll need to target her parasite besides her heart.

Yaoki catches my hands after somehow managing to disarm me, she interlocks her fingers with mine. Pulling me in closer with starry eyes.

"Wow! Did you just transform that coin into a knife?!"

I'm taken aback. I just tried to kill her, and she just killed me, yet she's happy?

"wha-?" I stammer.

"Do it again! Do it again!!"

"Eh?"

"This is too much for me." Zero leaves the room in a panic.

The doctor begins grabbing me in bad places.

"Hey, watch what you're grabbing?!"

After various gunshot wounds, I manage to escape the doctor's office, somehow in better shape than I entered. After which, I return to class.

Sitting at my desk, I mumble, annoyed to myself. "How was she hired to work here?"

Roulette turns to me. "Who yuh talkin bout?"

"An unqualified hag."

Espy nervously walks up to me and begins profusely bowing as tears run down her eyes. "I'm sorry, I was useless! When that... fire... I just stood there... then you protected me." Lowering her head as she Mumbles to herself. "I'm just as useless as everyone says."

Roulette looks disgusted by her weakness; I, on the other hand, give her a big smile. "There's no need to worry about it. I'm just glad that you didn't get burned."

"But, you... you got hurt..."

"I'm all better now. In fact, I should be thanking you. Your words motivated me... and I was able to feel like a real Luminary."

She looks hesitant and confused by my kindness.

A natural-born tool.
