Chapter 20 - Let Them Eat Cake!

Walking through the courtyard, I see a crowd begin to form. Strolling over with curiosity, I'm pleased to see that Volley stands in the middle of it all as he preaches from behind a podium.

"I'm grateful that there are so many of you who have taken an interest in my cause. For we are all bound by one connection, and that is our goal to become a hero! But I ask you, what makes a Luminary a hero? Their wealth? Their power? Their status? No! A Luminary is someone who stands up for what is wrong! Someone who fights for what is right! Then why should we allow some school system categorized by wealth to determine our worth!"

I see, as people watch in fascination and curiosity, voices begin to gossip.

"Well, he's kind of right? It seems unfair."

"They likely did it to help show our progress."

"But then why would only some students initially get placed in higher classes?"

From the left side of the crowd, a group of people cheers for Volley.

"You saved me!"

"I love you, Volley!"

It is likely the group of students he's saved from the basement.

"I fear many of you have all been brainwashed. This school holds its title as a badge of honor. But just the other day, I saved eight students who were tied up and tortured for the thrill of their captor, an upperclassmen. These low-class students were not outside of the school boundary; they were in our so-called "protected school," yet by the time I managed to save them, they had already been tortured for four days. And worse yet..." Volley takes a pause as if holding back tears, "...I was too late to save one of them. There was no sign that the school had ever attempted to strike this insurgent. I couldn't understand... how could the school allow such atrocities to befall their innocent students? I came to a disappointing realization. The school does not care about us of the lower classes. Their pockets jingle the tune of upperclassmen's money while our corpses lie silent and coin-less! "He declares.

"He's right! On the first day, they said we were nothing but punching bags for the upperclassmen."

"Yea. But what does he think he's doing? he's trying to take on the school itself!"

"I'm sure you are just as aware as I am. This is not a fight I can win alone, for I am but a single person. That is why at this very moment, I am forming a new syndicate. From now on, we shall be named Starfall. We are an army of truth seekers and forward thinkers, and we shall not rest until the sky that holds us down... falls!"

"Starfall?"

"We number in the tens now, but as we reach further in the night, we will shine in the thousands! I... Volley will act as the commander. But a single star cannot light the night sky, so I beseech you for your aid to create and guide this light." His voice booms with confidence through the voice changer in the mask.

As I leave, I hear the crowd cheer. This has worked far better than I could have ever imagined.

He's the perfect cast!
