"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 165: On the Brink of Breakthrough
A flash of dazzling light split the battlefield. From the heart of the magic array, a woman stepped forth.
Her outfit was scandalous—barely-there bodice, skirt slashed so high it flirted with her hips. She fixed the group inside the protective barrier with a sly, mocking smile.
"Well, well. Greetings, current Maou Sirzechs."
Not a trace of fear. Even facing the Maou himself, she radiated nothing but amused defiance.
Sirzechs's eyes narrowed. "Katerea Leviathan—the heir of the former Leviathan bloodline. What's the meaning of this?"
Everyone tensed. The woman was pure old blood—a direct descendant of the previous Maou.
Draconis took stock of the situation. The old four Maou had died in the war. Before the new four could claim power, the old bloodlines fought tooth and nail, refusing to surrender. But most devils wanted peace. So the old guard was exiled, relegated to a corner of the Underworld. The new regime rose, led by the four new Maou.
Katerea's face twisted with resentment and challenge. "The old Maou faction? We're all joining the Khaos Brigade."
Sirzechs frowned. The name rang a bell.
"Khaos Brigade?" Azazel's lips curled into a knowing grin. "So those lunatics finally crawled out of the woodwork."
Michael's tone was cool. "You know them?"
"They're a collection of the nastiest elements from all three powers. Sacred Gear wielders—some at Balance Breaker level. And at least a few confirmed Longinus users among the humans."
Azazel spat, half laughing, half sighing. "You think I collect Sacred Gears for fun? I keep tabs on them for exactly this reason. Self-defense. Khaos Brigade is the nightmare scenario."
The line between old and new Maou was now a gaping chasm.
Azazel shrugged, grinning. "Devils have it rough, huh?"
Serafall Leviathan's voice was gentle, almost pleading. "Katerea, why? You're a devil too…"
"Shut up!" Katerea snapped. "You stole my Leviathan throne, and now you have the gall to talk peace? I'm the true heir—the Maou should be me!"
Draconis rejoined Rias and the others inside the barrier. Sona Sitri and her Queen, Tsubaki, were still fighting nearby. With the teleportation array destroyed, the pressure had eased. But Katerea—the old Maou's champion—wouldn't be easy to handle. Clearly, she refused to accept being cast aside.
Sirzechs spoke quietly to Rias. "Grayfia's analyzing the world-ending array above us. Until she cracks it, focus on clearing out the magicians interfering with her. Leave Katerea to me."
"…Understood." Rias nodded. Katerea's power was real—she had every right to claim the Maou title.
Above, the magic array loomed—a threat to everyone. Even Draconis, shielded by Divine Lament, didn't want to take a direct hit. A spell on par with a god's attack… best to kill it before it's born.
Anyone who could conjure an array like this was a threat on the level of the Khaos Brigade. The stakes had just skyrocketed.
Rias moved out, joined by Sona and her Queen.
"We'll help," Sona said softly.
"Good. Let's swat these flies for good." Rias's voice was sharp—Draconis's performance had lit a fire in her.
Sona actually smiled. "You've gotten bolder since recruiting your ace."
Rias shrugged, a hint of pride in her eyes. "Draconis helps, but I'm getting stronger too. Don't let me leave you in the dust."
Sona pushed up her glasses, deadpan. "Not worried. But Draconis, your growth is kind of ridiculous."
"Ridiculous?" Draconis swung his blade, holy-demonic power tearing through a cluster of magicians.
He glanced down at the Regalia Blade, muttering, "Still not strong enough."
Tsubaki looked exasperated. "Never satisfied, huh?"
Draconis smiled, shaking his head. He wanted strength, but not out of blind ambition.
He remembered the old days—barely surviving, forced to beg Rias for protection. Even a low-tier fallen angel was a life-or-death struggle.
Now, he could wipe out a swarm of those "trash" with a single swing. He'd surpassed Rias herself. But peace still felt fragile, always just out of reach.
Yes, he'd grown powerful. But the enemies kept getting stronger.
Just when the three great powers were about to sign a peace treaty, the Khaos Brigade appeared—throwing down a force as strong as the devils, and absorbing the entire old Maou faction.
No rest for the wicked.
Draconis longed for peace. Eternal life with Rias, Akeno, and the others—what could be better? He wasn't a battle-crazed lunatic like Kokabiel. He wanted quiet, not endless war.
But he was being forced forward.
If he didn't grow stronger, his perfect life could be shattered by some new monster at any moment.
So he'd become the strongest—untouchable, unchallenged. When enemies feared him, peace would finally come.
He charged into the magicians. The Virtuous Monarch's Aegis seemed to sense his resolve—its aura turned razor-sharp.
It was a Sacred Gear born to protect, but it responded to its master's will. Sometimes, peace demanded bloodshed. Even the true Virtuous Monarch hadn't ruled with mercy alone.
Sona and Tsubaki stared in shock as Draconis tore through the crowd. Around him, his Sacred Gear began to resonate.
His aura grew unstable—wild, surging.
"He's…" Sona started.
Rias's eyes widened. "No—he's synchronizing with his Sacred Gear. He's about to break through!"
She'd known Draconis was at the peak of mid-class devil, his holy power growing, his contracts never ceasing. A breakthrough was inevitable. But for it to happen here, now—on the edge of a battlefield—
