"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 187: Nordic Gods?
Long Yi could see it—a bright blueprint for the future. With Mai and her sister's troubles finally resolved, everything felt like it was falling into place.
If only the Khaos Brigade didn't show up out of nowhere, life would be perfect.
"Long Yi," Mai called out behind him.
"Yeah?"
"Let's walk Nodoka home. After the concert, it's the perfect chance for her to talk things out with her mom."
"Works for me."
No complaints here. Once Nodoka was dropped off, Long Yi could spend the evening with Mai—no need for barriers, no interruptions.
The three of them headed out. It was just past five, still early enough for a leisurely stroll.
No flying this time. The sisters had finally patched things up, and they had plenty to say to each other. Long Yi played the silent bodyguard, trailing a step behind.
After a few blocks, Long Yi's gaze sharpened.
…Someone was watching him.
His senses had grown razor-sharp lately. Even though the gaze was distant, he could pinpoint it—someone was tracking him, and they weren't weak.
Who was this guy?
And why did his intent feel so hostile?
Long Yi kept his cool, escorting Mai and Nodoka a bit further before murmuring, "Mai, something's come up. I need to handle it. Take Nodoka and go."
"Huh? What's wrong?"
Long Yi's expression was icy. "Nothing. Just get out of here."
The watcher had realized he'd been spotted—now he was flying straight toward them, making no effort to hide.
Mai instantly caught on. Trouble.
"Nodoka, let's go."
She grabbed her sister and hurried away.
Mai wore a summon spell Long Yi had placed on her—he wasn't worried about her safety. After seeing what stray devils and rogue exorcists could do, he'd made sure his loved ones were protected.
If Mai ever faced danger, the soul contract between them would alert Long Yi instantly. A single thought, and the summoning magic would whisk him to her side.
He'd even built in a backup: if he couldn't respond, the spell would reroute to Rias and the others.
Everyone in his peerage could call for help, anytime.
With those safeguards, the days of stray devils slaughtering contractors were over.
Smart girls made life easier. Long Yi was grateful for Mai's quick thinking.
He dropped the gentle act and turned cold, staring up at the sky.
A man hovered there, grinning down at him—floating just above the ground, like he couldn't bear to touch the dirt.
"Impressive. You actually noticed me. Looks like the devil world's rising star isn't just hype."
He sounded cocky, like Long Yi was beneath him.
"Didn't anyone teach you that spying on people in the human world is rude?"
Long Yi's voice was flat, but his eyes were sharp. The newcomer's smile didn't hide the malice radiating off him.
Definitely not friendly.
"Heh… Word is, the devil world's got a new genius. Even the legendary Demon Kings won't shut up about you. They say the angels handed over a Holy Sword, and it was given to you alone. I had to see what kind of genius you are."
The man descended, stopping half a meter above the ground—refusing to land, as if the earth itself was beneath him.
"My name is Brien. I serve Lord Loki, the god himself. I came to test your strength. If you pass, I'll let you join me as a subordinate. Together, we'll serve Loki and achieve great things."
Long Yi stared at him.
Loki.
A chief god of the Norse pantheon.
So this guy was one of the Nordic gods?
And he wanted Long Yi as his lackey?
Long Yi was speechless for a moment.
He replied, voice flat:
"Even if Loki showed up himself, he'd have to speak to me as an equal. Your name means nothing to me, and your attitude's even worse."
"What? You're just a high-class devil—how dare you talk like that!"
Brien looked genuinely shocked.
To claim that even Loki would have to treat him as an equal…
Was this guy insane?
"Are you really a genius? You sound more like you've got brain damage…"
Brien's face twisted with annoyance.
"What a waste, coming all the way down here. Figures—anyone who hangs around with lowly human females can't amount to much…"
Long Yi just stared at him.
What do you even say to an idiot like this?
Sure, on paper he was only a high-class devil—hell, his official title was still "low-class," since the middle-class exam kept getting postponed.
But after his last few fights, even Sirzechs himself didn't dare treat him like just another high-class devil.
Come on—Long Yi was way off the charts.
Other people fought one rank up; Long Yi could leap two.
Even legends like Sirzechs and Michael couldn't pull off that kind of cross-tier combat.
Brien's power was decent, probably enough to challenge the strongest high-class devils…
But Long Yi could have crushed guys like him back when he was still middle-class.
Where did this clown crawl out from?
Did his village not have internet?
Didn't he know Long Yi had beaten Kokabiel, a fallen angel leader on par with ultimate-class devils?
Who gave him the guts to come here and try to recruit him?
Well… maybe the Norse gods were so far away, news hadn't reached them yet.
And this guy was waving Loki's name around like a flag—Long Yi couldn't help but wonder if he was trying to stir up trouble for his own god.
Honestly, Long Yi couldn't figure out what Brien was after.
Fine.
He'd just beat him down and get answers the old-fashioned way.
No more talking—time for action.
