Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 – Heart of Ashes

Ash fell like burning snow.

The battlefield had long since turned into a wasteland of fire and shadow, the ground itself cracking with veins of molten red. Anna and Kael stood back-to-back, their breathing ragged, blades raised. Around them, the Ashborn swarmed like a tide that could not be stopped.

Each time Anna's sword cut through the air, a line of blinding twilight light seared across the horde—yet for every creature she felled, two more rose from the ashes, their bodies knitting together as if death was no more than an inconvenience.

Kael's cursed flames blazed in all directions, black fire devouring the twisted forms. His eyes gleamed with a feral light, the shadowmark crawling across his skin, deeper and darker than ever before. Each strike he unleashed was devastating—yet each one also chipped away at his humanity.

The storm of enemies pressed closer.

"Kael!" Anna shouted over the roar of battle, slashing another Ashborn in half. "We can't hold like this forever!"

Kael's blade whirled in a wide arc, erupting in a wave of crimson-black fire that scattered the nearest enemies. He didn't look back at her—his voice was low, strained, carrying the edge of desperation.

"I know… but if we fall here, there's no one left to stop it."

Then, the ground beneath them trembled.

The entire horde paused as if listening. The air itself thickened, ash swirling faster into a vortex that spiraled toward the center of the battlefield.

There, half-buried in charred stone, pulsed a colossal ember—the Fragment-Heart of Ashes.

It throbbed like a heartbeat, every pulse sending waves of heat and shadow that warped the air. With each beat, more Ashborn rose screaming from the dust, their bodies twisted, larger, sharper, more vicious than before.

Anna's grip tightened on her blade. The air burned against her skin, yet beneath the searing heat she felt something deeper—a pull, as if the Heart itself was calling her, whispering promises of power.

If you take me… you will never fall again.

Anna's jaw clenched. "Don't listen," she muttered to herself, shaking off the voice.

Kael's flames roared higher as he carved through a new wave. But Anna could see it—the shadows were eating him alive, his movements growing wilder, less controlled. His curse was close to consuming him.

If they didn't end this now… they would both be lost.

The Push Toward the Heart

The swarm tightened around them. Claws scraped steel, ash creatures shrieked, the smell of burning filled the air. Anna and Kael moved as one, blades cutting an arc through the darkness.

"Together!" Anna shouted.

She raised her sword high, twilight energy flaring along its edge.

"Twilight Sever!"

A crescent of radiant dusk-light carved a path through the frontlines, tearing Ashborn apart in a flash.

Kael followed instantly, slamming his cursed blade into the ground.

"Abyss Fang – Breaker Maw!"

Black fire surged outward in jagged lines, the ground itself cracking as molten flame swallowed entire clusters of Ashborn.

For a moment, the path to the Heart was open. They charged forward, side by side.

But the Heart pulsed again.

From its ember-like core, shadow and flame erupted, coalescing into a monstrous form. Molten rock and black ash fused into limbs the size of towers, and eyes of molten crimson snapped open.

The Guardian of Ashes had awakened.

The Guardian's Rise

The Guardian's roar shook the battlefield, a sound like the collapse of a mountain. Its colossal hand, wreathed in flame, slammed into the ground, sending shockwaves that hurled Ashborn and stone alike into the air.

Anna shielded her eyes from the heat, her teeth gritted. "So it wasn't going to be that easy…"

Kael's laughter was harsh, almost mad, as the cursed fire flared around him. "Good. Something big enough to burn."

The Guardian's molten blade, forged from pure flame and shattered fragments, lifted high. It descended with apocalyptic force—

Anna's wings of twilight burst open, propelling her upward. She swung her sword with both hands.

"Radiant Eclipse – Skyfall Slash!"

Her strike met the giant blade mid-swing, sending sparks and ash scattering like a storm of stars. The impact rattled her arms to the bone, nearly knocking her from the air, but she held firm.

Kael dove low beneath the swing, shadows wrapping around him. He reappeared at the Guardian's leg, blade igniting with abyssal fire.

"Eclipse Devourer!"

His strike carved deep into molten stone, shattering fragments free—but the Guardian didn't falter. Lava spilled from the wound, but the fragments reformed instantly, knitting together stronger than before.

"Damn it!" Kael cursed. "It regenerates—fast!"

Anna landed beside him, panting, her blade glowing with both light and shadow. "Then we don't give it the chance."

Relentless Battle

The Guardian moved with terrifying speed for its size, its molten blade cleaving swathes of destruction. Each step scorched the earth, each roar summoned more Ashborn from the ground. The battlefield was no longer theirs—it belonged to the Heart.

Anna and Kael fought without pause.

She leapt high, her wings glowing, and spun into a spiraling descent.

"Twilight Spiral – Dawnbreaker!"

Her sword drilled into the Guardian's shoulder, exploding in radiant dusk-light that tore molten rock apart.

At the same moment, Kael unleashed his curse in full, his eyes blazing red as black fire consumed his blade.

"Infernal Eclipse – Devouring Maw!"

His strike split across the Guardian's torso, sending cracks of shadowfire spreading like veins.

For a moment, the Guardian staggered. Its molten frame shook, pieces sloughing off like collapsing stone.

Anna gasped. "We can do this—!"

But the Heart pulsed again.

The cracks they had made sealed instantly, and the Guardian's form doubled in size. Its molten blade erupted into twin weapons—one of fire, one of shadow. Its roar split the heavens, the air igniting around them.

Kael spat blood, his knees trembling under the pressure. "It's… evolving."

Anna's hand shook on her hilt. The Guardian wasn't just defending the Heart. It was the Heart—its true body, awakened.

And unless they shattered it completely, there would be no end to this nightmare.

The Guardian of Ashes towered above them, its colossal frame pulsing with molten fire and shadow. Every beat of the Fragment-Heart within its chest sent waves of ash and heat rolling across the battlefield. The horde of Ashborn gathered behind it like worshippers at a shrine, shrieking in perfect unison.

Anna's breath came in ragged gasps, sweat and blood streaking her face. Her twilight wings flickered with exhaustion, but her grip on her blade was steady. Kael stood beside her, chest heaving, the shadowmark crawling across his skin like chains tightening with every heartbeat. His cursed flame burned brighter, wilder — and more unstable.

They had seconds. Maybe less.

"Anna…" Kael's voice was hoarse, barely human. His eyes burned crimson. "If I lose control — don't hold back."

She whipped her head toward him, fury flashing through her exhaustion. "Don't you dare say that. We end this together. No other way."

The Guardian roared, lifting both molten blades high. The sky itself seemed to crack under the force of its swing.

Clash of Titans

Anna's wings flared wide. "Then together it is!"

She shot forward, sword blazing with twilight light.

"Twilight Sever – Falling Dawn!"

Her blade tore across the Guardian's molten arm, spraying magma like blood.

Kael followed instantly, shadows twisting around him, his cursed blade engulfed in black fire.

"Abyss Fang – Crimson Rend!"

His strike carved across the opposite arm, the Guardian's twin blades clashing against their combined force.

The battlefield erupted in a storm of fire, shadow, and light. The shockwave hurled Ashborn into dust, shattered stone into fragments, and split the ground in a canyon of flame.

But the Guardian did not fall.

Instead, it adapted. Its molten arms split further, forming four weapons — two of blazing fire, two of black shadow. Its movements quickened, each swing carrying the weight of a collapsing mountain.

Anna and Kael fought like lightning and thunder. Every strike Anna made was matched by Kael's cursed flame, their blades moving in perfect rhythm even as the Guardian pressed them harder and harder.

Yet with every clash, Kael's movements grew more violent, his strikes more reckless. The curse was overtaking him.

Kael's Breaking Point

"Kael!" Anna shouted as she barely deflected a flaming strike aimed for his chest. "Stay with me!"

But his eyes were half-shadow now, his voice a growl. "I… can't… hold it…"

The Guardian slammed its colossal blade into the ground, and Kael roared in answer. Black fire exploded outward in a massive wave, consuming everything in a hundred-meter radius.

Ashborn screamed as they were obliterated. Even the Guardian staggered under the blast, chunks of molten stone ripped from its body.

But Anna's heart froze.

Kael was standing in the center of the inferno, his body burning from the inside out, the shadowmark fully consuming his arm. His cursed blade pulsed as if alive, hungering, dragging him deeper into the abyss.

"Kael!" Anna's voice cracked. She ran to him, grabbing his wrist. The cursed flame scorched her skin, but she didn't let go. "Look at me! You're not gone — not yet!"

His eyes flickered, crimson clashing with shadow. His voice was a whisper.

"Then… lend me your light."

Fusion Strike

Anna's breath caught. She understood.

She raised her sword, twilight light flaring brighter than ever before. Kael lifted his cursed blade, the black fire raging in unstable waves. Together, their weapons touched at the tips — light and shadow colliding, screaming, fusing.

The Guardian roared, sensing the threat. It charged, molten weapons raised.

Anna and Kael shouted as one:

"Eternal Eclipse – Heavenbreaker!"

Their fused strike unleashed a cataclysmic wave of twilight-shadow fire. A beam of radiant dusk, rimmed with black flame, tore across the battlefield, splitting the Guardian from chest to core.

The Fragment-Heart screamed as the attack pierced it, molten stone exploding outward in a tidal wave of fire. The Guardian staggered, its weapons falling, its body collapsing piece by piece into ash and magma.

Anna and Kael drove their fused strike deeper, until the Heart itself cracked.

"NOW!" Anna cried.

With a final surge, they split the Heart in two.

Shattering the Heart

The Guardian let out one last roar before its entire form imploded, collapsing into ash and molten fragments that rained across the battlefield.

The Heart shattered. Its fragments scattered across the ground like dying stars, their light flickering out one by one.

The Ashborn froze. Then, without their core, they crumbled into dust, the battlefield falling silent for the first time.

Anna fell to her knees, her blade trembling in her hands. She was drenched in sweat, lungs burning. Kael collapsed beside her, his body wracked with violent tremors, the curse still clawing at his flesh.

They had done it. They had destroyed the Heart.

But the silence was wrong.

The True Core Awakens

The fragments did not fade.

Instead, they pulsed — slowly at first, then faster, each shard glowing brighter until the entire battlefield was lit in a storm of burning light.

Anna's eyes widened. "No…"

The shards lifted into the air, swirling together, merging into a new form. But this was no molten giant, no crude Guardian. This was something older, deeper.

A voice, vast and cold, echoed across the battlefield.

"You have shattered my vessel… but you cannot destroy what I am."

From the fragments rose a burning, formless shadow — vast, endless, stretching into the sky. Its presence crushed the air, heavier than the Guardian, heavier than anything Anna had ever felt.

Kael coughed blood, his voice a rasp. "That… that's not just the Heart. That's the Entity itself…"

The formless shadow turned its gaze upon them.

"You will burn… with the rest of creation."

The ground split open. Flames erupted skyward. The true battle was about to begin.
