Chapter 43 - Judge, Jury Executioner

The Cleansing Blade, like a blue leviathan carrying heavy secrets, quietly returned to the magnificent port of the Macragge's Honour.

After an initial review by the Captain and the consistent testimony of Lieutenant Golden, Dorian, Gaius, and Golden himself were temporarily cleared of suspicion of actively colluding with Chaos and had their limited freedom restored.

However, they were still required to maintain strict secrecy regarding Luna's situation and remain available for questioning at any time.

Yet, the true problem still hung like a dark cloud over the core area of the warship—within the highest-level isolation chamber.

Luna had awakened from her coma.

Her physical injuries were gradually healing thanks to the Chapter's advanced medical technology, but the wounds to her spirit grew ever deeper.

She lay on the cold medical bed, the faint hum of the isolation field sounding like a dirge for her.

She raised her still-mobile right hand, touching the Chaos mark on her forehead, temporarily covered by special material, but still feeling the cold, writhing presence beneath.

Luna, usually calm, rational, and even somewhat detached, now had eyes that typically flickered with data analysis, but they were uncharacteristically tinged with red, filled with bewilderment, fear, and deep despair.

She could clearly feel the evil power contained within that mark, utterly contrary to her faith and essence; it was like a festering bone infection, constantly eroding her will, attempting to drag her into endless madness and whispers.

She knew all too well the Empire's methods for dealing with Chaos-tainted individuals.

Regardless of the reason, whether voluntary or not, once branded with this mark, her ultimate fate was almost certainly destruction.

She recalled her life: studying under the guidance of a Tech-Priest, joining the Ultramarines, becoming a Tech-Sergeant, fighting alongside her brothers in Second Squad (later First Squad)... she had survived countless near-death experiences, was she truly destined for such a humiliating and tragic end?

"...Am I finished...?"

A faint, choked whisper echoed in the empty isolation chamber, then was swallowed by the hum of the force field.

Meanwhile, in a secluded storage room deep within the warship (to avoid potential eavesdropping), Chapter Master Marius Calgar was holding a highly secret meeting with his confidantes—Captain Cassius of the First Company, Captain Cato Sicarius of the Second Company, and Captain Hek Hansen of the Third Company.

"...All conventional methods have been tried," Chapter Master Calgar's voice was filled with weariness and frustration, "The Tech-Priest's purification rituals, the Librarian's psychic dispelling, even attempts to surgically remove that portion of tissue... but the mark seems bound to her soul; any physical or psychic attempt at removal only triggers a stronger backlash, potentially even directly endangering her life."

The three Captains' faces were exceptionally grim.

They all knew Luna, an excellent and loyal Tech-Sergeant, and her fate was regrettable.

"Chapter Master, is there truly no other way?" Captain Hansson of the Third Company couldn't help but ask; he had witnessed the events firsthand, and his emotions were particularly complex.

"Conventional means seem ineffective," Captain Cassius of the First Company said gravely, "Perhaps... we could seek help from other Chapters? Like the Sanguinary Priests of the Blood Angels? Or the Grey Knights? If they could prove Luna's innocence..."

"The Grey Knights?" Captain Sicarius of the Second Company scoffed, "Those silver-armored 'purifiers'? They only execute the Emperor's extermination orders! Bringing them here would be a death sentence for Tech-Sergeant Luna!"

"Then are we just to stand by and watch?" Cassius retorted.

"Of course not!" Sicarius's tone was resolute, "The fate of the Ultramarines should be decided by the Ultramarines themselves! Not handed over to those cold Inquisitor and Grey Knights! If... if the mark truly cannot be removed..." He paused, his voice lowering, "Then we, too, should... personally perform her final rites of rest, rather than let her suffer humiliation at the hands of the Inquisition!"

Though his words were cruel, they represented the sentiments of many present.

Rather than let a loyal warrior die under the suspicion and "purification" of her own people, it was better for her comrades to grant her final dignity.

Chapter Master Calgar listened in silence to the three Captains' arguments, his heart a battlefield of conflicting thoughts.

As Chapter Master, he had to consider the overall interests of the Chapter and the laws of the Imperium; but as a commander, he could not easily abandon any loyal warrior.

"Continue to try every possible method," the Chapter Master finally decided, his voice hoarse but carrying an unquestionable resolve, "Use all resources, contact all potentially helpful and absolutely reliable brother Chapters or organizations.

But..."

His sharp gaze swept over the three Captains: "...The matter of Luna must be strictly confined to the smallest possible circle.

Until the worst-case scenario proposed by Captain Sicarius becomes reality, I will never willingly hand her over to the Inquisition.

Ultramarines protect their own brothers."

"Yes, Chapter Master!" the three Captains responded in unison, a flicker of determination in their eyes.

They knew this decision meant the Chapter Master would bear immense risk.

However, they did not know that even as they secretly deliberated, a pair of invisible, treacherous eyes watched it all through the veil of the Warp.

Under the hidden manipulation of Kairos Fateweaver, an encrypted message, incredibly realistic and mimicking Chapter Master Marius Calgar's authority and tone, had been sent through a highly concealed and tampered communication channel to the nearest Inquisition branch office.

The message "clearly" and "sorrowfully" stated: "Clear signs of Chaos corruption have been discovered within the Ultramarines Chapter; a high-ranking Tech-Sergeant has been tainted by a demonic mark, the situation is critical, requesting the Inquisition to swiftly dispatch specialists for investigation and handling, to uphold the purity of the Imperium..."

Three days passed swiftly amidst suppression and anxiety.

The Chapter Master had tried almost every method within his authority, even privately contacting several close Chapter Masters for help, but the responses were either helplessness or a need for more time to research.

The Chaos mark on Luna's forehead remained stubbornly present, as if mocking their efforts.

Just as Chapter Master Calgar was almost despairing, even beginning to consider Sicarius's cruel suggestion—

Stunning news, like a clap of thunder, reached his command center!

"Report, Chapter Master! An Inquisition fast attack ship, without prior notification, has suddenly appeared in orbit and issued an urgent landing request!

They claim... they received a report and have come to deal with an emergency Chaos contamination event!"

"What?!" Chapter Master Calgar abruptly stood from his command throne, his face instantly turning ashen!

The Inquisition?!

How could they be here?!

Who called them?!

Who told them?!

In an instant, Kairos Fateweaver's insidious and cunning face flashed in his mind!

"Karlos!!" Calgar practically hissed the name through gritted teeth, a cold wave of anger and helplessness instantly sweeping over him!

He had underestimated the Lord of Change's malice and cunning!

It had managed to perfectly forge a message, directly luring the wolf that was the Inquisition!

What now?

The enemy was at their gates, and they came under the official banner of "dealing with Chaos contamination"!

To forcibly refuse would be tantamount to openly defying the Inquisition, solidifying the crime of harboring Chaos!

In a flash, Chapter Master Calgar forced himself to calm down.

He took a deep breath, his eyes once again sharp and profound.

"Reply to the Inquisition's vessel, allow landing.

Open Hangar One, prepare to receive them," he commanded in a deep voice, his tone betraying no ripple of emotion.

"Order the Honour Guard to accompany me to the hangar to 'greet' the Inquisitor."

He deliberately emphasized the word "greet," a cold glint flashing in his eyes.

Regardless, the formalities had to be observed.

He wanted to see who the Inquisition had sent this time, and what they intended to do.

He would not easily hand over Luna.

As the Inquisition's menacing, somberly black-painted fast attack ship slowly entered Hangar One, the atmosphere throughout the hangar became heavy.

Chapter Master Calgar, clad in his ornate Chapter Master power armor, stood like an iron forest at the front of the landing zone, followed by three Honour Guard warriors in Saturn Pattern Terminator armor and seven in Ironclad Pattern Terminator armor, all heavily armed.

The hatch opened, and a scent mingling incense, old parchment, and cold metal wafted out.

First to descend were two Inquisitor, clad in exquisite black power armor or robes.

Their faces were mostly hidden beneath hoods or high collars, revealing only cold, emotionless eyes.

Judging by the insignia on their armor, they were from the Ordo Xenos and Ordo Malleus respectively.

Following them were two full squads, six Grey Knights in total!

Their silver-grey armor gleamed with a cold luster in the hangar lights, and though not in Terminator armor, the chilling aura specifically directed at Chaos immediately dropped the ambient temperature.

Their gazes, like scanners, immediately began to scrutinize the hangar environment.

Next came four Battle Sisters, clad in red power armor, armed with Bolters or meltaguns, their eyes fanatical and resolute.

Finally, escorted by a squad of elite Inquisitorial Stormtroopers, a figure slowly stepped out of the hatch.

When Chapter Master Calgar saw this figure, even his heart couldn't help but sink!

It was a Grey Knight!

And a Grey Knight clad in ancient and powerful Nemesis Terminator armor!

His armor was even more ornate, and the insignia on his shoulder pad indicated an incredibly noble status—this was a Grey Knight of the Grand Master level!

Even a Grand Master had personally come?!

How "serious" was the message Karlos had forged, after all?!

The Inquisition's contingent this time far exceeded Chapter Master Calgar's expectations!

This was completely beyond the scope of a routine investigation; it was clearly prepared for the most forceful confrontation!

The leading Inquisitor from the Ordo Malleus stepped forward and spoke in a cold, formalized tone: "In the name of the God-Emperor, we, by order of the Inquisition, have come to address the emergency Chaos contamination event reported by your Chapter.

Please immediately lead us to the source of contamination and cooperate with all investigations."

Chapter Master Calgar's face was ashen; he stepped forward, meeting the gaze of the Inquisitor and the Grey Knight Grand Master without flinching, his voice steady and strong:

"Welcome to the Macragge's Honour.

However, I have not sent any request for aid to the Inquisition.

There seems to be some misunderstanding in this matter.

Regarding our Chapter's internal affairs, we are handling them ourselves..."

Before he could finish, the Grey Knight Grand Master slowly raised his hand.

His movement carried an unquestionable authority, and the gaze hidden beneath his helmet seemed capable of seeing through souls.

"Chapter Master," the Grand Master's voice was ancient and cold, as if from the abyss, "The defilement of Chaos cannot hide.

We perceive the clear, putrid scent of the Lord of Change.

Regardless of the message's origin, the contamination exists.

According to Imperial law and the Codex Astartes, the Inquisition has the right to intervene.

Please... cooperate."

Although his words were polite, the strong implication within them made everyone understand—this matter would not be easily brushed aside.

Chapter Master Calgar's heart sank to the bottom.

He knew the most difficult confrontation had just begun.

He had to find a way to maneuver; he absolutely could not let these Inquisitor and Grey Knights easily take Luna away.

The atmosphere in the hangar instantly became extremely tense, as if a fierce conflict could erupt at any second.

Though the ten Ultramarines Honour Guard Terminators remained silent, their tightly gripped weapons and slightly adjusted stances clearly indicated their attitude—they pledged loyalty only to Chapter Master Marius Calgar.

The Inquisition's side showed no weakness either.

The Grey Knights' cold visors scanned the Honour Guard, assessing threat levels.

The Battle Sisters' fingers rested on their triggers, their fanatical eyes filled with a desire for "purification."

The Stormtroopers spread out into a Vigilance formation.

The leading Inquisitor and the Grey Knight Grand Master, like two icebergs, exuded a suffocating pressure.

Chapter Master Calgar, facing the powerful lineup and aggressive demeanor of the other side, felt heavy-hearted but maintained his composed expression.

He knew that at this moment, he could not show weakness, much less reveal any guilt.

He had to maneuver on the grounds of reason and rules.

"Grand Master, Inquisitor," Calgar's voice was loud and majestic, echoing through the vast hangar, "I reiterate, I, Marius Calgar, as Chapter Master of the Ultramarines Chapter, have not sent any request for aid to the Inquisition.

This matter is highly likely an enemy plot, intended to sow discord among Imperial forces and disrupt my Chapter's normal operational order."

He stepped forward, his gaze sharply sweeping over the Inquisitor and the Grey Knight Grand Master: "As for the so-called 'contamination' you perceive, it was caused by a Tech-Sergeant within my Chapter who, while on duty, unfortunately encountered an ambush by the Daemon Prince Kairos Fateweaver.

She is a loyal warrior, an innocent victim.

Currently, she is under strict isolation and receiving active treatment.

This is an internal affair of my Chapter, and it is proper for us to investigate and handle it ourselves."

He deliberately emphasized "internal affair" and "handle it ourselves," invoking the relatively independent status and authority of the Astartes Chapter within the Imperial system.

Although the Inquisition had the right to oversee all Imperial institutions, direct interference in the internal discipline and personnel management of a First Founding Chapter, especially one as esteemed as the Ultramarines, still required sufficient justification and a cautious approach.

"Internal affair?" the leading Inquisitor from the Ordo Malleus let out a cold scoff, "Chapter Master, when the defilement of Chaos appears among the Emperor's Angels, it is no longer merely an internal affair!

This concerns the purity and security of the entire Imperium!

Any potential contamination must be thoroughly eradicated; this is the unquestionable duty of the Inquisition!"

"We understand your Chapter may wish to handle this yourselves," another Inquisitor from the Ordo Xenos interjected, his tone slightly milder but still firm, "but the direct involvement of a Daemon Prince is no small matter.

The contamination it leaves behind is certainly not trivial and may hide a deeper conspiracy.

To ensure absolute certainty, and to prove the Ultramarines' innocence, evaluation and purification by the professional personnel of the Inquisition and the Grey Knights is the safest choice.

Please, Chapter Master, prioritize the greater good."

Although the Grey Knight Grand Master did not speak, his silent gaze alone brought immense pressure.

His powerful psychic senses, like invisible tendrils, seemed to already be attempting to penetrate the warship's deck, searching for the source of that Chaos aura.

Chapter Master Calgar cursed the stubbornness of these Inquisitor inwardly, but outwardly he remained impassive: "I understand your duties and your concern for the security of the Imperium.

The Ultramarines Chapter always welcomes any oversight based on facts and procedures.

However,"

He changed tack, his tone becoming firmer: "All actions must comply with Imperial law and the Codex Astartes!

Without any formal charges or conclusive evidence demonstrating systemic corruption or complicity within my Chapter, the Inquisition has no right to forcibly remove any member of my Chapter who is currently under investigation and treatment!

These are the rules established by Primarch Roboute Guilliman, and they are the bottom line that all Astartes Chapters uphold!"

He invoked Primarch Guilliman and the Codex Astartes, clearly drawing a red line.

The Astartes Chapters were not ordinary Imperial institutions to be manipulated at will.

"As for the assessment," Calgar continued, his tone softening slightly, "I can allow one Inquisitor and one Grey Knight representative, under my personal escort, to conduct remote observation and assessment from the perimeter of the quarantine zone. This is the greatest concession I can make based on the sincerity of our cooperation. But until the investigation is clear, no one is allowed to touch the injured, let alone decide her fate. The fate of the Ultramarines must be decided by the Ultramarines themselves!"

This was Chapter Master Calgar's carefully considered strategy. A complete refusal would only escalate the conflict, giving the other party an excuse for forceful intervention. A moderate concession, allowing limited "observation," could temporarily appease the other party, demonstrate a willingness to "cooperate," and keep the initiative as much as possible in his own hands, buying more time and space to rescue Luna. At the same time, he once again emphasized the principle of "self-determination."

The Inquisitor exchanged glances, clearly evaluating Calgar's proposal. Although they were powerful, they also understood the consequences of directly clashing with a Chapter like the Ultramarines, especially when the Primarch and the Codex Astartes were brought up.

The Grey Knight Grand Master finally spoke again, his voice still as calm as an ancient well: "Agreed. But the observation must be conducted by me personally. Furthermore, if the degree of contamination is confirmed to be beyond control, or if there is an immediate risk of spread, the Inquisition will reserve the right to take all necessary measures."

This was his bottom line.

Chapter Master Calgar knew this was the best he could hope for at the moment. He nodded: "Very well. Please follow me."

He motioned for the Honour Guard to clear the way, but they maintained a vigilant protective stance. He personally led the Grey Knight Grand Master and the leading Daemon Inquisitor towards the quarantine zone. Other Inquisition personnel were instructed to remain in the hangar bay.

Along the way, the atmosphere remained tense. The Grey Knight Grand Master's powerful psychic perception swept through the corridor like a searchlight, causing all passing Ultramarines to feel an instinctive discomfort and pressure.

Finally, they arrived at the observation room outside the highest-level isolation chamber. Through the thick transparent tempered glass and layers of energy fields, Luna could still be seen lying on the medical bed inside, her forehead covered with special material, but the chaotic aura belonging to the Lord of Change was still as clearly discernible as a torch in the dark to an entity like the Grand Master.

The Grand Master stood silently before the observation window, "watching" for a long time. His psychic power, like the most precise instrument, carefully analyzed the nature, intensity, and degree of entanglement of that power with the host's soul.

The Daemon Inquisitor beside him already had a cold glint in his eyes and whispered: "Such a clear mark...undoubtedly direct contamination of a Daemon Prince level...Grand Master, I believe..."

The Grand Master raised his hand, stopping him from continuing. He slowly turned around and looked at Chapter Master Calgar, his voice still cold, but with a hint of... solemnity that was hard to detect?

"The mark does exist, and its power originates from Kairos Fateweaver. The degree of contamination...is very deep, deeply entangled with the host's soul," the Grand Master stated the facts, each word making Calgar's heart sink a little further.

But his next words, however, surprised both Calgar and the Inquisitor: "However...it's very interesting. Although this power is strong, it currently seems to be in a peculiar 'dormant' state, not actively spreading or attempting to control the host's mind. It's more like a... 'mark.'"

He looked at Calgar: "Chapter Master, you mentioned earlier that this is a plot by Kairos Fateweaver?"

"Yes," Calgar replied affirmatively, briefly explaining the situation reported by Golden.

The Grand Master was silent for a moment, seemingly weighing something. Finally, he spoke: "Given the special circumstances, and the direct involvement of a Daemon Prince's plot, we temporarily accept your Chapter's request for self-management. However,"

His tone became extremely serious: "Chapter Master, you must understand the responsibility you bear. Once the contamination is out of control, or any act of concealment is discovered, the Inquisition and the Grey Knights will no longer show any leniency. At that time, the consequences will far exceed your imagination."

"I understand," Chapter Master Calgar responded solemnly, a slight sigh of relief escaping him, but the pressure remained undiminished. The Grand Master's temporary concession was not out of mercy, but based on vigilance against Kairos's plot and a certain "observation" of the Ultramarines Chapter. This was more like a stay of execution.

"We will temporarily be stationed on the ship, awaiting the results of your 'handling,'" the Daemon Inquisitor added coldly, clearly not entirely satisfied with the Grand Master's decision, but not daring to disobey either, "I hope, Chapter Master, that you will not disappoint us, and certainly not the Imperium."

With that, the Grand Master and the Inquisitor turned and left.

Chapter Master Calgar remained alone outside the observation room, his brows furrowed as he looked at the unconscious Luna inside the isolation chamber.

The temporary crisis had passed, but a greater challenge lay ahead. He had to find a way to remove the mark within this limited time. Otherwise, once the Grey Knights and the Inquisition lost patience... the consequences would be unimaginable.

Kairos's poisonous scheme was still tightening its grip, step by step.

Chapter Master Marius Calgar confined himself to his private contemplation chamber, the data slates before him piled high with documents from the Chapter archives, the Mechanicus, and even some clandestine channels, all concerning Chaos marks, soul purification, and combating the forces of Tzeentch. His brow was deeply furrowed, and his eyes were bloodshot. Time ticked by, minute by minute, with the watchful Inquisition and Grey Knights still stationed outside, every moment feeling like an eternity.

Conventional methods were ineffective, and unconventional means were extremely risky, with no clear starting point. The mark left by Kairos was far more insidious and stubborn than imagined. Was the only option truly the cruelest one proposed by Captain Sicarius? Calgar was unwilling to accept it.

Just as he was mentally exhausted, a piercing alarm and an urgent communication request sounded almost simultaneously!

"Chapter Master! Emergency! A conflict has broken out outside the highest isolation chamber in Sector D-19! One of our warriors is in a fierce standoff with Inquisition personnel!" The comms officer's voice was filled with urgency.

Calgar's heart sank: "Specific location? Who is it?"

"It's... it's Dorian! He's wearing Terminator armor, he injured a Battle Sister, and now he's pointing his weapon at two Grey Knights! The situation is extremely dangerous!"

Dorian?! That fool!!!

Calgar's blood pressure instantly surged! His worst fear had come true! Either those Inquisition fellows were trying to forcibly take Luna without his knowledge and Dorian happened to stumble upon them, or Dorian, that stubborn hothead, had heard some rumors or had his own wild thoughts and went to cause trouble!

Either way, it was terrible! This was practically handing the Inquisition a weapon!

"I'm going immediately!" Calgar roared, grabbing the Power Sword from his desk and striding out of the contemplation chamber. The Honour Guard immediately followed close behind him.

When he arrived at Sector D-19 at top speed, the sight before him filled him with rage, yet also a hint of helpless relief.

The relief was that it wasn't a large-scale forced abduction by the Inquisition; the rage was that while the conflict was small in scale, its nature was extremely serious!

Dorian's massive, blue Saturn Pattern Terminator body stood like an insurmountable bulwark, firmly blocking the heavy metal door of Luna's isolation chamber! The twin-linked storm Bolter on his right arm rumbled lowly, locked firmly on the two Grey Knights in front of him! His left Power Fist was clenched, emitting a dangerous hum of stored energy!

Opposite him, the two Grey Knights, though not having drawn their weapons, had already entered a combat-ready stance, psychic energy shimmering on their silver-grey armor, their cold visors fixed on Dorian. A Battle Sister lay to one side, her left shoulder pauldron completely twisted and deformed, clearly having been struck squarely by a Power Fist, with fragments of her power armor and some blood scattered on the floor. Another Battle Sister stood a little further away, weapon in hand, nervously watching the standoff.

And Dorian's roar, amplified through external loudspeakers, made the entire corridor hum:

"...Get out! You silver-grey bastards! Grey Knights Chapter's lapdogs! Don't even think about taking Luna! She didn't do anything wrong! It was that damned two-headed bird that harmed her!"

"If you dare take another step forward, I'll shove your heads into an engine's exhaust port! Go back to Terra! Ultramar doesn't welcome you!"

"Whoever dares touch her, I'll kill them!"

A torrent of profanity spewed from Dorian's mouth, filled with undisguised hostility and threats. The two Grey Knights, though still silent, their surrounding aura grew increasingly cold.

Chapter Master Calgar arrived to find such a tense, explosive scene. He was so angry he almost choked! This Dorian! It was indeed him who instigated the trouble! And he had injured Inquisition personnel! This was simply... However, just as he was about to sternly reprimand Dorian and try to control the situation, his keen gaze caught some details: the position of the two Grey Knights and the Battle Sister was not at the official entrance to the isolation chamber, but at a relatively hidden side passage, usually used for equipment and emergency personnel. Moreover, the main door security system of the isolation chamber seemed to show signs of an attempted breach by abnormal means!

A thought flashed through Calgar's mind: Dorian wasn't causing trouble without reason! It was these Inquisition people, trying to secretly take Luna from the side door, behind his back! And Dorian, who was probably secretly coming to visit out of worry, just happened to catch them in the act! Dorian might be reckless, but he was protecting a comrade!

Having realized this, Chapter Master Calgar's fury instantly shifted its target! These Inquisition dogs! How dare they try such underhanded tactics on his ship!

Just as he was about to erupt and reprimand the Inquisition side—

An even larger, more imposing figure, as if teleporting, appeared silently at the other end of the passage. It was the Grey Knight Grand Master!

His arrival caused the already tense standoff to momentarily freeze. The two Grey Knights immediately bowed slightly, saluting the Grand Master.

The Grand Master's cold visors swept over the scene, lingering for a moment on the injured Battle Sister and the attempted breach of the door lock. He did not look at Dorian, but turned directly to the two Grey Knights and the Battle Sister, his voice like ten thousand years of ice:

"Explain."

His voice was not loud, but it carried supreme authority and oppressive power.

The uninjured Battle Sister's face paled, and she quickly explained: "Grand Master! We... we were ordered by Inquisitor Malachi to... to 'transfer' the contaminatee for a more thorough examination... The Inquisitor said... said he had already received your tacit approval..."

"A lie." The Grand Master's voice was utterly devoid of emotion, yet it made the Battle Sister feel as if doused with ice water, instantly silencing her.

He looked at the two Grey Knights: "Do you also believe this clumsy lie?"

The two Grey Knights lowered their heads: "We were remiss, Grand Master, please punish us." They had clearly been deceived by the Inquisitor using the Grand Master's name.

The Grand Master slowly turned his head, for the first time formally looking at Dorian, who was still highly vigilant like a bristling hedgehog, and the grim-faced Chapter Master Calgar who had arrived behind him.

"This matter was our unauthorized action, violating our agreement." The Grand Master's voice was still rigid and cold, but he unexpectedly admitted his mistake directly, "I did not authorize any forced removal. Such actions violate the Emperor's sacred will and the Chapter's rules."

He nodded slightly, gesturing to Chapter Master Calgar: "I apologize for this improper action, Chapter Master. The injured personnel will receive treatment, and those involved will also be punished."

This statement caught Chapter Master Calgar, who had been preparing for a conflict, somewhat off guard. He hadn't expected the Grand Master to admit his mistake and apologize so readily.

The Grand Master's gaze swept over the isolation chamber door again, as if he could see Luna inside through the thick metal. "Regarding that Tech-Sergeant," he continued, "her condition is special, and a forced transfer could indeed lead to unpredictable dire consequences. I promise that during our stay, the Grey Knights will assist your Chapter in attempting to find a method of purification, rather than resorting to extreme measures."

These words surprised Calgar even more. Assist in purification? This change in attitude was too drastic!

Just then, Chapter Master Calgar carefully scrutinized the Grand Master's ancient Terminator armor, especially the design of the helmet and some subtle, hard-to-notice details... A long-forgotten memory suddenly surged into his mind!

More than thirty years ago, during the brutal battle against the Word Bearers on the borders of Ultramar, when they had cleansed a group of Word Bearers on the ground, the leader of the Grey Knight squad who had arrived first to deal with the aftermath and assess Gaius... that Grey Knight Captain, also wearing Terminator armor, whose words were rigid yet carried a different aura... Although the armor was slightly different, and his status was clearly higher, that unique psychic fluctuation and way of speaking... "You..." Chapter Master Calgar couldn't help but speak, his tone tinged with surprise and uncertainty, "...Are you 'Silver Shield,' who came more than thirty years ago when the Ultramarines cleansed the Word Bearers in the Ultramar system?"

The Grand Master's movements paused slightly, those cold visors seeming to "look" at Calgar again through the faceplate. After a few seconds of silence, his rigid voice spoke again:

"Old names need not be mentioned again, Chapter Master. Merely fulfilling my duty."

Although he didn't directly admit it, he didn't deny it either! It really was him!

At this moment, Chapter Master Calgar was filled with mixed emotions. "Silver Shield" had witnessed the power of the Lord of Change in Gaius's left arm all those years ago, and knew the fact that the power within Gaius had not been purified. Was his current attitude also related to his experiences back then? Did he hold some degree of... understanding or sympathy for the Ultramarines Chapter?

In any case, the statement from "Silver Shield," the Grand Master, undoubtedly brought an unexpected turn of events to a desperate situation.

Dorian, though not entirely understanding the situation yet, could tell that this biggest Grey Knight didn't seem to be here to arrest people; instead, he was speaking on their behalf? Although he still held his weapon vigilantly, the curses from his mouth finally stopped.

Chapter Master Calgar took a deep breath, suppressing the turmoil in his heart, and responded solemnly: "Thank you for your fairness and your promise, Grand Master. The Ultramarines look forward to your cooperation."

The statement from the Grey Knights Grand Master, "Silver Shield," was like a tiny crack appearing in a cloud-filled sky, casting a faint but real ray of light. He promised that once Luna's condition stabilized, he would personally attempt to remove the Chaos Mark from her, which was undoubtedly the most hopeful news at the moment.

Chapter Master Marius Calgar solemnly expressed his gratitude. Whether the Grand Master's intervention was due to some 'sentiment' from the events of that year, or purely based on his vigilance against Kairos's conspiracy and his professional attitude towards 'special cases,' it greatly alleviated the immediate crisis.

Grand Master Silver Shield nodded slightly, said no more, and then left Sector D-19 with the two Grey Knights and the injured Battle Sister. Their figures disappeared down the corridor, but the invisible pressure had not entirely dissipated.

The easing expression on Chapter Master Calgar's face quickly vanished, replaced by an even deeper seriousness. He immediately issued a death order to the Honour Guard behind him:

"From now on, you will personally guard this place! Besides Grand Master Silver Shield himself, any Inquisition personnel, regardless of rank, who attempts to approach the isolation chamber without my permission will be considered a hostile act and immediately apprehended! If they resist..." A cold glint flashed in the Chapter Master's eyes, "...you are authorized to use all necessary force, including lethal force! Tech-Sergeant Luna must not suffer any further unauthorized disturbance or harm!"

"Yes, Chapter Master!" The warriors of the Honour Guard roared in unison, their voices filled with resolute determination. They moved their massive Terminator bodies, like the most loyal fortresses, firmly sealing every access point to the isolation chamber.

After issuing his orders, Chapter Master Calgar finally turned his gaze to Dorian, who stood to the side, looking like he had done something wrong but was still unrepentant. Fragments of the Battle Sister's shoulder guard still clung to his massive Power Fist.

"Dorian," the Chapter Master's voice betrayed no emotion.

"Here, Chapter Master!" Dorian flinched, quickly straightening his back.

"Injuring an Inquisitorial Battle Sister, violently resisting Grey Knights, verbally insulting Imperial law enforcement personnel... each charge is enough to send you to a military tribunal," the Chapter Master said slowly.

Dorian's heart sank, but he still stood his ground: "But Chapter Master! They were..."

"I know what they wanted to do," the Chapter Master interrupted him, "but that is no reason for you to take matters into your own hands and provoke a conflict! Your actions nearly led to irreversible consequences!"

Dorian lowered his head, but his fists remained clenched.

The Chapter Master's tone then softened slightly: "However... in a situation where the truth was unclear, daring to step forward to protect a comrade, even resisting authority... that courage and loyalty are commendable."

He looked at Dorian: "Merits do not cancel out faults. You will be confined for seven days to reflect on your impulsiveness! After those Inquisitor leave, your subsequent treatment will be decided based on the circumstances. Now, immediately unequip your armor and report to the brig!"

Dorian was stunned for a moment, then understood the Chapter Master's intention. Confinement was both punishment and protection. Temporarily isolating this volatile powder keg would prevent him from causing further trouble, and it was also a gesture to the Inquisition—look, we have punished the perpetrator.

"Yes, Chapter Master! I accept the punishment!" Dorian had no complaints, respectfully accepting the order. With the help of a Tech-Sergeant, he skillfully removed his beloved Saturn Pattern Terminator armor, changed back into his regular uniform, and then, 'accompanied' by two Honour Guard warriors, walked towards the brig. Although he was in confinement, his heart remained with Luna, and his mind was already planning how to 'have a good talk' with that Daemon Inquisitor named Malachi once he was released, and those Grey Knights... Hmph, he just needed to catch an opportunity...

Meanwhile, in the Adjutant's office, Lieutenant Golden was practically buried under data-slates and ancient tomes. His eyes were bloodshot, and his face appeared haggard from extreme lack of rest. He had not slept for over sixty-five hours, frantically poring over every possible piece of information related to Chaos Marks, soul purification, and especially combating the forces of Tzeentch.

From forbidden scrolls in the Chapter's Librarium to obscure documents requested from the Mechanicus, and even some dubious, fringe archives detailing unorthodox purification rituals... he left no stone unturned.

However, the results were despairing. The mark personally placed by Kairos Fateweaver was far more complex and insidious than any recorded case. Most documents indicated that once directly branded by a Daemon Prince-level entity, it was almost equivalent to permanent soul-level corruption, nearly irreversible, with the ultimate outcome being either complete madness and degradation or purification.

"Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!" Golden slammed his fist onto the heavy metal desk, producing a dull thud. Extreme fatigue and frustration pushed the usually composed Lieutenant to the brink of losing control. His anger had exploded, a fire seemingly burning in his chest.

If... if the Chapter Master agreed, he would even now tear open a Warp rift, charge in, find that two-headed bastard Kairos Fateweaver who deserved a thousand cuts, grip its neck tightly with his power gauntlet, twist off its two damned heads, and personally interrogate it on how to remove this accursed mark!

But he knew this was just impotent rage. He forced himself to calm down, rubbed his throbbing temples, and once again turned his gaze to the ancient runes and descriptions of complex rituals that looked like hieroglyphs... Perhaps... there was still hope...

As for Gaius, he was plunged into deep self-doubt and guilt. He locked himself in his quarters, refusing all visitors, including a worried Eilaas. He sat on the edge of his bed, head bowed, hands tightly gripping his hair.

Luna's ordeal was like a cold file, repeatedly tormenting his heart. If not for him, if not for the power of the Lord of Change that he once possessed, Kairos would not have targeted him, would not have used such malicious means to retaliate and sow discord! Luna was innocent! She should have continued on her path as a Tech-Sergeant, serving the Chapter with her wisdom and skill, instead of lying in a cold isolation chamber, enduring the corruption of Chaos, and possibly even being judged by her own people!

She had dodged countless barrages on the battlefield, avoided numerous hidden snipers and ambushes, and survived so many life-and-death trials... Would she, in the end, die at the hands of her own people because of him?

This thought, like a nightmare, clung to him, almost suffocating him.

"It's all my fault... It's all my fault..." he whispered, his voice hoarse and pained.

But he knew he could not succumb to such negative emotions. Kairos's goal was precisely this! It wanted to break his will, to make him waver, to give Tzeentch's whispers an opportunity to exploit his vulnerability! The more he blamed himself, the more he suffered, the closer he got to Kairos's conspiracy!

"Never... I will never let you succeed..." Gaius suddenly raised his head, his eyes still holding pain, but more so a forcefully gathered determination. He had to be strong, for Luna, and for everyone who cared about her. He could not fall first.

He had also heard the news that the Inquisition had attempted to forcibly take Luna, and that Dorian, the hothead, had inadvertently stopped it. The moment he heard the news, the rage in his heart almost erupted, making him wish he could immediately grab his 'Hawkeye' sniper rifle, find that Daemon Inquisitor named Malachi, and blast his head, along with his malicious thoughts, to pieces!

But as a highly disciplined Ultramarines Sergeant, rigorously trained, he forcibly suppressed this urge. Violent confrontation with the Inquisition would only make things worse, bringing greater trouble to the Chapter Master and the entire Chapter. He had to endure, he had to trust the Chapter Master and... that unexpected 'ally,' Lord Silver Shield.

Gaius also dared not tell Eilaas the truth. The Dark Eldar girl whom Luna had raised herself, and regarded Luna as a teacher and mother. He simply told Eilaas that Tech-Sergeant Luna had received an urgent mission and needed to go to another brother Chapter to assist in repairing some very important and complex equipment, and might be gone for some time.

Although Eilaas was a bit puzzled and disappointed, she did not suspect anything. She even enthusiastically showed Gaius and the other warriors her latest improved miniature Power Gauntlet, proudly recounting how she had 'accidentally' punched Dorian, who was in his regular uniform, into the medical bay—a 'glorious deed.'

Watching Eilaas's innocent and vibrant smile, listening to her artlessly discuss the various technical points Luna had taught her, Gaius's heart was pricked as if by needles. He dared not imagine how heartbroken and despairing Eilaas would be if she knew the truth, knew the suffering and threats Luna, whom she considered family, was enduring. That innocence and happiness would likely shatter instantly.

Meanwhile, in the dark and cramped isolation cell, Dorian sat cross-legged on the floor, his mind buzzing despite the tight space.

He was meticulously planning a 'revenge scheme'.

"Malachi… Malachi…" He repeatedly muttered the name of the Daemon Inquisitor, as if to engrave it into his mind, "When I get out of here, you're the first one I'm coming for! I don't care if you're an Inquisitor or not, if you dare touch my brother, you better be ready to taste my Power Fist!"

He even started to ponder where the Grey Knights usually stayed, calculating how he could sneak up behind them and land a punch.

"Hmph, Grey Knights… just an eyesore!"

As for the consequences? Dorian didn't care about the consequences.

Isolation? Court-martial? Even expulsion from the Chapter?

In his eyes, nothing was more important than protecting his brother!

Luna suffered this great misfortune because she protected them, and now it was his turn to protect her!

Anyone who dared to harm his brother would face his wrath!

This was Dorian's simplest, yet firmest, logic.

The Chapter Master's order of confinement could imprison his body, but it could not restrain his restless heart, filled with indignation and the fire of vengeance.

A hidden current was quietly surging within the massive warship.

Time in the isolation cell felt like an eternity to Dorian, every second a century.

He couldn't know what was happening outside, relying only on the occasional meal deliveries from the Tech-Servitor, whose emotionless electronic eyes and silent demeanor offered no clues.

This uncertainty amplified his anxiety and anger, and the 'plans' in his mind for 'teaching' the Inquisitor and Grey Knights a lesson became increasingly detailed, even taking on some dangerous specifics.

Seven days of isolation felt like the ultimate test of his patience and discipline.

He countless times wanted to forcibly break out, but ultimately, he used his strong willpower to suppress the impulse.

He couldn't cause Chapter Master any more trouble, nor could he endanger Luna with his recklessness.

Finally, after what felt like an age, the isolation cell door slid open with a hiss of air pressure.

Standing outside was Lieutenant Golden, his face still grim.

"Time's up, come out." Golden's voice carried an undeniable weariness.

Dorian immediately rushed out, urgently asking, "Lieutenant! How is Luna? Has the Grand Master… the Grand Master tried it? Was it successful?"

Lieutenant Golden shook his head, his eyes dim: "Silver Shield tried once yesterday.

The process… was very difficult.

He seemed to have used a very ancient and powerful Grey Knights secret art, and Luna's pain was somewhat reduced, and the mark's glow also dimmed slightly, but… it could not be completely eradicated.

Silver Shield said that Kairos's power is too deeply rooted and almost integrated with Luna's soul.

Forcibly stripping it carries extreme risks, potentially even causing her soul to directly collapse.

He needs time to research a more stable method."

Dorian's newly ignited hope was instantly doused, and he angrily punched the nearby wall, leaving a clear indentation: "How long will that take?! Are we just going to watch that damn thing stay on Luna's head?!"

"What good is impatience?!" Lieutenant Golden snapped, though his own eyes were filled with the same anxiety, "Silver Shield is already doing his best!

All we can do now is trust him and ensure no more trouble arises!

Especially you, Dorian! Behave yourself! Don't cause any more trouble! Do you hear me?!"

Dorian looked at the Lieutenant's bloodshot eyes and haggard face, knowing he too was under immense pressure, and finally lowered his head reluctantly, muttering, "…Understood."

But the flame of vengeance in his heart had not been extinguished, only temporarily suppressed.

He secretly swore that if Luna was truly beyond saving, or if the Inquisition dared to make another move, he would definitely make those people pay the price!

Outside the quarantine zone, although Grand Master Silver Shield's attempt was not entirely successful, the brief dimming of the light and the reduction of Luna's pain still acted like a strong stimulant, giving Chapter Master Calgar and Lieutenant Golden a faint glimmer of hope.

At least, this path was not completely blocked.

Silver Shield returned to the Inquisition's ship after the attempt and remained secluded, seemingly dedicating himself to researching countermeasures.

His focused and responsible attitude further increased Chapter Master Calgar's trust in him.

However, the atmosphere on the Inquisition's side was completely different.

On the Inquisition's rapid strike cruiser, the 'Fire of Purification,' the atmosphere in Daemon Inquisitor Malachi's room was cold and oppressive.

Inquisitor Malachi's face was ashen as he looked at the summary report on the holographic screen before him, detailing Grand Master Silver Shield's failed purification attempt.

A cold, unsurprised curve appeared at the corner of his mouth.

"Indeed… how could the means of a Daemon Prince be so easily broken?" he murmured to himself, his tone even carrying a hint of schadenfreude, "Silver Shield is too indecisive, even developing unnecessary 'sympathy' for that Chaos-tainted Tech-Sergeant.

This is simply a blasphemy of the Inquisition's duties!"

In his view, any existence tainted by Chaos must be thoroughly purged, with no exceptions or excuses.

Silver Shield's attempt to purify was itself a compromise and a weakness.

"We cannot wait any longer." A ruthless glint flashed in Malachi's eyes, "Every moment we delay, the risk of contamination spreading increases!

Moreover, who can guarantee that the Tech-Sergeant won't suddenly and completely fall at some point, causing an even greater disaster?

We must act swiftly and decisively!"

He knew that with Silver Shield's obstruction and the Ultramarines Chapter's hardline stance, a direct approach would certainly not work.

He needed more covert, more vicious methods.

A sinister plan gradually formed in his mind.

He couldn't directly deal with Luna, but he could attack from other angles, forcing the Ultramarines to hand her over themselves, or create an 'accident' that neither Silver Shield nor the Chapter Master could prevent.

His gaze fell upon the ship's personnel database, his finger sliding across the screen, finally resting on a name and photo—Eilaas, of Dark Eldar origin, a veteran Tech-Sergeant of the Third Company, extremely close to the contaminated Luna, like mother and daughter… A Dark Eldar… an xeno… how could she hold a position in a noble Astartes Chapter?

This in itself was a huge hidden danger and a blemish!

Perhaps… he could find a breakthrough here?

Inquisitor Malachi's face revealed a cruel and cunning smile.

He pressed the communicator, summoning his most trusted, equally radical assistant.

"Go, thoroughly investigate all information on this Dark Eldar named Eilaas, especially her relationship with Tech-Sergeant Luna, and… whether she has any… 'unusual' actions or… 'talents'." Malachi commanded coldly, "Remember, be discreet.

We need some… 'conclusive' evidence to help our Astartes 'friends' recognize the dangers lurking among them."

"Yes, Lord Inquisitor!" The assistant's eyes gleamed with fanaticism as he departed.

Malachi leaned back in his chair, his fingertips lightly tapping the armrest.

He seemed to already see that the naive Dark Eldar girl would become the perfect fulcrum to shift the entire situation.

Ultramarines… let's see how you protect your own this time!

At the same time, on the Macragge's Honour, Gaius was still deep in self-reproach and suppression.

He forced himself to go through daily training, but his attention was difficult to focus.

Every time he saw Eilaas innocently bustling around other Tech-Sergeants, or enthusiastically tinkering with her inventions, his heart ached as if pricked by needles.

He became even more taciturn, almost completely isolating himself except for necessary tasks and communication.

He knew this wasn't right, but he couldn't shake the heavy sense of guilt.

He could only constantly tell himself to be strong, to wait, and to trust the Chapter Master and Silver Shield.

Lieutenant Golden, meanwhile, continued to pore over documents day and night, while also handling the company's daily affairs, looking visibly haggard.

Chapter Master Calgar, on the other hand, devoted most of his energy to dealing with and navigating the pressure from the Inquisition, while closely monitoring Silver Shield's progress, utterly exhausted.

The entire ship's atmosphere, due to Luna's situation, remained shrouded in an invisible, oppressive shadow.

Everyone was waiting, waiting for the final outcome, whether it be a glimmer of hope or the judgment of despair.

And no one noticed that a malicious web was quietly being cast in the dark towards the unsuspecting Dark Eldar girl named Eilaas.

Kairos's scheme, through Inquisitor Malachi's hands, was continuing to erode the unity and stability of the Ultramarines in another way.

A storm was brewing.
