The aftermath of my little intervention was, to put it mildly, awkward. Ino was looking at me like I was a fascinating new kunai she wanted to dissect, Hinata was trying to merge with the tree behind her, and Naruto was practically steaming, his face a vibrant shade of indignant orange that clashed horribly with his jumpsuit. I, on the other hand, was mentally calculating how much this little detour would cut into my evening training schedule.
"Raikou," I said again, breaking the silence. "Raikou Uchiha."
Ino's smirk was sharp. "Raikou. You don't fight like Sasuke-kun. He's all flashy and perfect. You just… won. It was boring."
I raised an eyebrow. "He was off-balance and angry. The fight was over before he threw the punch. Anything else would have been a waste of energy."
"Energy saving, huh?" she said, a new glint in her eyes. "I guess that's one way to look at it."
Naruto, who had the patience of a lit firecracker, finally exploded. "Hey! What about me?! I was gonna save her! DATTEBAYO!"
I finally turned to give him my full attention. He was a force of nature, I'd give him that. A hurricane of untapped potential and questionable fashion choices. "You want to be Hokage, right?" I asked, my voice genuinely curious.
He puffed out his chest. "Yeah! I'm gonna be the best ever!"
"Then a word of advice," I said, leaning in just a fraction. "Heroes are supposed to be on time."
The air went out of him. His face cycled through a hilarious series of emotions: confusion, realization, and finally, a deep, burning fury. "Why you—!"
Before he could lunge, Hinata took a half-step in front of me, a tiny, trembling shield. "He's right, Naruto-kun," she whispered, not looking at him.
That did it. Being told off by me was one thing; being gently corrected by the girl he was going to save was a critical hit. His shoulders slumped. The sting of being too late, of being irrelevant, was a new and bitter taste for him.
Seeing my window, I seized it. "Well, this has been fun, but my schedule awaits." It was the perfect excuse. I gave Ino a nod, which she returned with a funny look, and then a softer glance to Hinata, who looked like she might faint.
I walked away without a backward glance at Naruto. The air was practically buzzing behind me. I could feel Ino's inquisitive gaze, Hinata's shy admiration, and Naruto's confusion. It felt like progress.

"Ah," I thought with a grim smile. "The art of manipulation. A much more useful skill than a bigger fireball."
The ripples from that day spread through the Academy with surprising speed. My life now included a set of unwanted, but useful, satellites. Ino took it upon herself to be my intellectual rival, constantly debating jutsu theory with me. Hinata became a quiet, constant presence, a shy shadow who would occasionally leave snacks on my desk. And Naruto… well, Naruto became my self-proclaimed arch-nemesis, his loud challenges serving as the perfect cover for my own quiet, understated performance.
I played my role with precision. My test scores were perfect—a given, with my memory. But in taijutsu, I was merely "good." I let Sasuke beat me, just barely, in our spars. I made my wins against Kiba look like a struggle. A visible genius is a target. A hardworking, reliable number two is an asset. Let Sasuke have the spotlight; I had bigger fish to fry.
It was working. But I knew it wouldn't last. The true prodigies weren't so easily fooled.
One afternoon, leaving the Academy, I felt that familiar, unnerving presence. I didn't have to look.
"Raikou."
I stopped and turned. Itachi Uchiha. He wasn't in uniform. He just looked like a teenager, but his eyes held the weight of a man a hundred years old Game Developer.
"Itachi-nii," I greeted him respectfully.
He closed the distance between us, and the bustling sound of the street seemed to fade away. "Shisui is worried about you," he said, his voice low and smooth. "He says you see too much. That you understand things a child has no right to understand."
"My memory is good," I replied, keeping my voice even.
A flicker of a smile, gone as quickly as it came. "So I've heard. But memory doesn't explain strategy." His gaze intensified, and for a moment, I felt like a bug under a magnifying glass. "You ace your exams, yet you hold back in practice. You effortlessly dispatch three bullies but allow your classmates to believe you are their equal. You observe everyone, but you let no one see you. Every action you take seems designed to build a reputation of harmless competence. I've been watching you, Raikou. I want to know why a six-year-old prodigy is hiding."
