The world burst into silver fire.
I threw myself behind my desk as Zander and Kira's joined hands released something that should never exist. Magic screamed through the air like a live thing, tearing holes in the walls and making the floor shake under my feet.
"Get down!" I yelled to Jake, but my voice vanished in the roar of power.
The old protection spells I'd spent sixty years building around this pack house started breaking apart. I watched in fear as golden threads of magic snapped like violin strings, each one taking a piece of my heart with it. These weren't just spells - they were my life's work, keeping our people safe from Council threats.
Now they were turning to dust.
Zander and Kira stood in the center of it all, their eyes glowing so bright I couldn't look straight at them. Silver light poured from their skin like liquid stars. But this wasn't the gentle magic I'd taught young wolves for decades.
