Chapter 17 - Sanctuary's Fall

Refugee Pack Member Sarah POV

"Mommy, I'm tired," Lucy whined, pulling on my sleeve as we stumbled through the dark forest. "When can we go home?"

I picked up my five-year-old daughter, even though my arms already ached from lifting baby Marcus for three hours. "Soon, sweetheart," I lied, knowing we could never go home again.

Behind us, orange fires lit up the sky where Willow Creek pack used to be. The Council soldiers had come at sunset, surrounding our territory before anyone could flee. I'd only gotten my children out because we'd been playing hide-and-seek in the woods when the attack started.

Everyone else was dead. Or worse.

"Sarah!" A voice called from the trees ahead. "Sarah, is that you?"

I stopped running, my heart pounding. In the moonlight, I could make out a familiar person stumbling toward us.

"Maria?" I couldn't believe it. Maria Gonzalez had been Luna of the Riverside pack, fifty miles east of our area. "What are you doing here?"
