Chapter 23 - Alpha Without Script

Zander's POV

My mind was empty, and something was laughing inside it.

I stared at the beautiful woman reaching for my hand, knowing I should recognize her but feeling nothing but confusion. Her face looked familiar, like someone I'd thought about, but I couldn't remember her name or why she mattered.

"Take my hand, Alpha," she said sweetly. "Let me help you remember who you really are."

Behind her, Jake was bleeding on the floor next to another woman who looked exactly the same. That woman was barely breathing, her skin pale as moonlight. Why were there two identical people? And why did looking at the dying one make my chest hurt?

The laughing in my head got louder.

She's nothing, a familiar voice whispered inside my brain. Just a broken toy. Take the right one. She'll never fail you.

I knew that voice. It belonged to the Hunger - the thing that had tried to eat everyone I cared about. But how was it in my head when Jake said we'd beaten it?
