Chapter 22 - The Narrator's Burden

Jake's POV

I could feel both Kiras dying, and it was my fault.

The perfect Kira was taking the real one's life force just by existing. Every second they stood in the same spot, our Kira got weaker while the fake one got stronger. I had to do something, but for the first time in my life, I didn't know what.

The voice that had led me since I was five years old was gone.

"Choose quickly," the perfect Kira told Zander, her smile getting bigger. "She's fading fast."

I wanted to scream at Zander to pick the right one, but my throat wouldn't work. Without the Weaver's whispers telling me what to say, I felt lost and stupid.

This was all wrong. I was supposed to have the answers. I was supposed to know how to fix everything. But right now, watching my best friend's mate slowly disappear while he fought to choose between two identical women, I felt like a helpless child.

The worst part? I knew this was happening because I had broken us free from the cosmic story.
