Kira's POV
The world around me went off like a piece of glass breaking backwards.
For a split second, I was holding Jake's hand, but then everything fell apart. One second, I was falling through a hole of broken stories that would never end. Colors that didn't have names yelled by my face. I could hear sounds that shouldn't be there.
When I screamed, my voice sounded like three different people at the same time.
"Zander!" It wasn't just my voice when I called. It was also the voice of a cold and mean Kira who had turned into a rogue hunter. It was the voice of Kira, who had died when she was seven years old instead of Mira. It was small and scared.
The falling feeling made my stomach twist. Around me, pieces of other lives flew past like broken movie scenes. In one fragment, I saw myself laughing with Mira by the banned river. But this time, neither of us fell in. We were both grown up, both safe, both happy.
My heart ached so bad I thought it might break.
