The moment that old presence spoke, I felt something snap inside my head like a breaking chain.

"Maybe," I said out loud, trying to keep control of my own voice. "But you've never controlled an Alpha who's too stupid to know when he's beaten."
Through our mate bond, I felt Kira's relief that I was myself again. But I could also feel her fear as she watched Jake dying on the floor, his life force flowing into the floating figure above us.
