The Archivist's POV
I felt the story break from three dimensions away.
Not a small break, like when an author changes a character's hair color or kills off someone suddenly. This was huge. Reality-shattering. The kind of break that happens when fictional people start making their own choices instead of following their script.
I dropped the narrative I was filing - a romance where the author had decided the love interest was "too problematic" - and rushed toward the commotion.
The Break was coming from a monster story. One I'd been watching for months because it was doing something impossible: the actors were refusing to play their parts.
When I appeared in their world, the first thing I saw was chaos. A building that lived in multiple dimensions at once, filled with beings who shouldn't be able to survive outside their original stories. And in the center of it all, a young woman with shadow powers who had no idea she'd just started a war.
