Chapter 3 - chapter 3 power level

It all began with the Big Flash.

Roughly six or seven months after the initial event, some people and animals began to mutate, growing larger, sporting an odd number of eyes, and, most terrifyingly, attacking other living beings without provocation.

People called them the [Horrors]. They were the creatures of the [New World], their basic instinct singular: to kill. Once they were "born," they sought only the living. They did not need to eat or sleep, and aging could not kill them. This event was known as the [First Wave].

In the typical fashion of any novel featuring Gates, Monsters, and Hunters, humanity had a single guide: The System.

The System was the sole hope for humanity's survival, providing the crucial knowledge needed to navigate the [New World]. After the [Bearing Process]—the initiation rite—a human or animal had only six to seven months before they were system-diagnosed as a [Rejected], meaning they would transform into a [Horror].

Fighter realized that if he had truly gone through the process, he should have memories of it, or at least access to the System.

Fighter: "System Interface."

Usually, uttering a command like that would summon a holographic, game-like display. But in this dark room, nothing happened. Fighter tried again, focusing his intent, but still, there was nothing.

Fighter: "Nothing happened? Rechel, what is happening? Where is my System?"

Rechel: [You don't need any system because you have me. Hmmm, ok.]

Fighter: "Because of your Flow, there's no System for me? Noo~~~oo! A system sounds soo~~~o cool!"

Fighter threw a dramatic tantrum, rolling onto his side on the dusty floor like a child denied a toy, openly mourning his loss of the "cool" holographic interface.

Rechel: [I am cooler than any system. Stop being a child, grow up. I said stop that. Ok.]

Fighter immediately stopped rolling. He knew Rechel was right; an Artefaq was objectively superior, but the System represented an easy path.

'Without the System, I lose out on many things,' he thought. 'Not just the coolness factor, but I also have to manually go through the process of discovery.'

The Path to Divinity

The Path of Stories required a being to know what [Script] they had received and then complete their [Story] by [Following ] as the Script demanded. The System would normally handle the critical task of revealing the Script and guiding the Acting process.

But without the System, Fighter needed the —a manual method of determining his ultimate [Book] or [Seat of Light]. The [Book] acted as a limiter on how many Scripts he could absorb and also hinted at the next Script he should take.

Fighter: "Rechel, do you have the power to know what my Script or my Book is?"

Rechel: [No, because you don't know, either. You dishonorable man. Ok.]

It seems Rechel is moody, Fighter noted. My tantrum, and comparing her to a simple System... maybe that's why she's gambling with my feelings.

Fighter: "Okay! I understand, I am sorry."

Rechel: [My owner should not bow down that easily. Ok.]

She was clearly still annoyed, but Fighter had more pressing matters. He needed to begin the [Process] of discovery. According to the novel, achieving Divinity required walking through eight distinct Chapters of Script progression.

Fighter recalled the structure:
