Evander's POV

I left her.

Not because I wanted to. Because I had to.

The door clicked shut behind me and the hallway swallowed me whole—concrete, steel, the cold reek of antiseptic and old oil. My hand went to my neck on instinct. Heat. Wet. Blood. Her bite burned there like a brand, a steady throb that shouldn't have mattered but somehow did. My fingers came away red.

My wolf prowled under my skin, a caged force slamming itself against bone. Ours. She bit. She chose. Go back. Bite her back. Mark her. I clenched my jaw so hard it cracked.

"No," I told him, low. The word scraped my throat raw. "Not her. Not now."

He snarled in answer, a rumble that vibrated through my ribs. I ignored it. I had spent years turning instinct into obedience. Wolves bend to will. Mine bends to mine.
