Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Mara, leave. I’ll be fine on my own.

Odette's POV

"Oh Madam, don't say such words again, lest if someone hears you we will both be done for," Mara said, panicked, her voice tight like she was holding her breath.

I scoffed. "Oh please, like I care. Besides, who could hear me from such distance? No one with such hearing existed." My tone came out annoyed, sharp, defensive.

Mara let out a sigh. A long, shaky sigh.

"Oh, Madam," was all she said. And because I couldn't see her face, her eyes, her mouth, I could only imagine. But the way her words dragged, soft and low, it was like she was telling me I was wrong. Like she knew something I didn't.

The thought burrowed into me.

But I pushed it away. I decided not to pursue it, not to ask, because maybe I was just overthinking again. Besides, I was right—no one had hearing like that. Not unless they weren't… human.
